The eruption is over but the ground is still shaking - there have been dozens of #earthquakes around the #HungaTonga #volcano (magnitude 4.5-5), continuing today. 1/3

Many are likely due to slip on existing faults or fracturing of new ones due to changes in crustal stress caused by the eruption. Others may be linked to magma movement, although that usually produces a more persistent signal called #volcanictremor. 2/3

I haven't seen any focal mechanisms for these events, which would tell us more about the type of #earthquake - it may be difficult to extract that information as these events are M5 or less, and seismic networks are sparse in this region. 3/3
Kanokupolu #Tonga taken yesterday, 1/16/22 via Airbus SPOT #satellite. Post volcano/tsunami. High resolution image, this looks to me to be ashfall.
#Tonga taken by Airbus SPOT on 1/16/22. This is (was?) Ha'atafu Beach and Haatafu Beach Resort, but it seems to me that there are structures missing on this side (the resort appears to me to be missing, or extremely covered with ash). Possible tsunami scouring on the beach.

This ship (the only one transmitting satellite AIS data) came from Nuku'afola this morning, when officials said they would be sending the Tonga Navy to the outer islands.

Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai #volcano on the left, you can see the interference patterns on the waves from the tsunami impacts (another volcano on the right). The gob of stuff in the middle was not there before, maybe floating tephra or something else radar reflective.
No tracking details on these ships (premium satellite data) but there are a few fishing boats that got one heck of a wakeup call earlier. There's a few that were VERY close to the volcano. (60 miles away on open ocean).

Is this the only volcano in the region? Absolutely not. Volcanoes parallel the plate boundary, a string of conical mountains 2000 m high, occasionally poking above the sea. Usually quiet, but built over millions of years through thousands of eruptions. 3/3

The simulation estimates the tsunami triggering via a sliding mass of up to 2 km³ volume. It might be an overestimation, but data is still coming in.

other. If this photo shows what the locals claim, then the landslide could happen today

1. On January 20, 2021 at 14.07 WIB, a hot cloud of avalanche occurred which was recorded on the seismogram with an amplitude of 20 mm and a duration of 192 seconds. The sliding distance is estimated to be 1000 m, the weather is cloudy.
2. On January 20, 2021 at 14:27 WIB, a hot cloud of avalanches was recorded on the seismogram with an amplitude of 30 mm and a duration of 117 seconds. Awanpanas rolled into Boyong River with a sliding distance of 1500 m. The wind blows north.
