This Sunday, January 15, will mark one year since the eruption of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano shocked the world. I remember being awestruck by these images.

In the Volcanic Explosivity Index scale, the eruption was rated at least a VEI-5. It was the most powerful eruption since the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa with an estimated eq. TNT yield of 100-200 megatons, more than the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated.
Tonga volcano had the highest plume ever recorded. The column of ash reached almost 58km altitude (36 miles). After one hour, the cloud of volcanic ash was roughly 650km wide. For comparison, that's roughly size of mainland Spain. earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/149474/…

The eruption lingered on throughout the night of 20/08/2022. The glow from the northern vent, and from the lava creek flowing out of the lava pond to the SE, lit up the gas plume that rose from the crater. The glow from the lava creek diminished during the night. (2/7)
The northern vent maintained a glow until daybreak yesterday (i.e., until 4am on 21/08/2022). At around 5am, this vent ejected glowing magma blebs (spatter bombs) in several discrete explosions, over a period of 15 minutes. The bombs breached the crater rim (photo). (3/7)

TUIfly flight OR 567 from Amsterdam to La Palma managed to land safely after several approaches

This potential eruption is not expected to cause any damage to infrastructure and towns/cities according to @almannavarnir. The eruption has not yet started and is far away from habited places.
Many have asked about what effects a potential #eruption in the #Reykjanes peninsula on @kefairport & #ReykjavikAirport. Based on standard procedure all airports in 120km radius from a #volcano get closed immediately and then reopened when @Vedurstofan issues ash advisory
The @kefairport location is optimal, even though it may be close to the potential eruption site since it is located on higher ground, greatly reducing the threat from lava flows. Depending on the magnitude of the eruption planes might have to change flight paths on arrival.
Based on the latest satellite data there are signs of #magma buildup. Over 30cm of rising is the highest seen so far in the area. This has caused scientists to add a potential scenario of a volcanic #eruption in the area west of Keilir mountain in #Reykjanes peninsula. #icemagma
This magma buildup is the likely cause of the #earthquake swarm over the past few days. Most likely location if #magma does reach the surface is behind Keilir and #lava would most likely flow only to uninhabited areas.
Potential #eruptions in the #Reykjanes peninsula are not explosive eruptions but rather basic lava eruptions - similar to the #Holuhraun eruption in 2014. The area is known for eruption periods, lasting 1-200 years, and calm periods lasting like this one for 800 years.

The USGS warned that a lot of volcanic ash could enter the atmosphere. Aircraft are said to fly around the area around Kilauea. The US weather service warned that the wind could carry the ashes to villages in the southwest of the island.

Your annual reminder that although it is claimed, today probably wasn’t the day that Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 burying the landscape in volcanic debris and covering the Roman cities of #Pompeii and #Herculaneum as well as other settlements and rural villas in the area.
According to letters Pliny the Younger wrote to Tacitus, detailing his eye-witness account of the AD79 eruption, it happened on Aug 24th.

A charcoal inscription uncovered in #Pompeii contains the date ‘XVI K Nov’—16 days before the Kalends of Nov—equating to 17th Oct. Though no year is mentioned, the impermanence of charcoal suggests this could have been written close to the time of eruption.
