When a #solarflare or filament eruption occurs, we don't immediately know if it launched a #CoronalMassEjection #CME

Great article from #SpaceWeatherLive
answers the question:

How do we know if a CME happened, if it's Earth directed & when it's going to arrive?

Here are 4 methods...

1. Using the proton flux monitor
2. Using SOHO/LASCO coronagraph imagery

Anatomy of a near disaster. What happened to @flyspicejet Flight 945 which resulted in severe passenger injuries and damage to the aircraft? I am a #SpaceWeather guy but here's a thread of my analysis on weather closer to home for @DGCAIndia + @JM_Scindia
hindustantimes.com/india-news/dgc…
Flight 945 took off from Mumbai around 5.00 pm en route to the Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport just North-West of steel city Durgapur (see gmaps 👇🏾). Whilst landing around 7.30 pm it was hit by what is being reported as extreme turbulence. Autopilot disengaged, all hell broke lose.
Below are flight tracker map of the Mumbai Durgapur air route taken by Flight 945 + thunderstorm archival data from the weather and radar app roughly corresponding to the time of landing of the aircraft. It flew straight into an intense localised storm, the famous Nor'wester!

Quite unreal to announce that I got an @ERC_Research Consolidator grant for improving #spaceweather prediction! This is foremost a success by everyone in our team: Tanja/Ute Amerstorfer, Maike Bauer, Rachel Bailey, Martin Reiss, and Andreas Weiss.
Best. team. ever.

A first shout-out goes to the Austrian Science Fund @FWF_at providing the funding that brought me here. My scientific career would have been completely impossible without it, and other grants by the @EU_Commission, including a Marie S. Curie fellowship.
The one year I spent with the Marie S. Curie at UC Berkeley @ucbssl and visiting @NASAJPL in Pasadena massively impacted my way of scientific thinking.
I kept working ever since with that kind of innovative spirit I picked up at these top institutions.

Our team has a new paper out lead by Martin Reiss on what is for sure one of the hardest problems in #spaceweather forecasting: predicting the magnetic field inside solar storms.

Have you ever wondered why forecasts of solar storms, well, really suck? Nature has added this weird twist that for developing a geomagnetic storm (+ aurora), the magnetic field of Earth needs to be temporarily "cut up" by a solar storm so the magnetosphere can be energized.
But this happens *only if* the magnetic field that is carried by the solar wind points into the opposite direction to Earth's field, which is northward 🌍⬆️ at its front. Only long-lasting southward ☀️⬇️ magnetic fields from the Sun are able to drive strong magnetic storms.

While it's great to see the debate over solar cycle predictions and #SunspotCycle25 feature in the @nytimes it is unfortunate that the story leaves an impression of a lack of consensus/physics-based understanding. Thread 👇🏾1/n
@NYTScience #SpaceWeather #SunspotCycle25
First, the story by @overbye nicely connects understanding Sun's magnetism with exploration of other active stars and #exoplanets, wherein stellar activity influences conditions suitable for hosting life. It describes well how solar storms create #spaceweather impacting us 2/n Image
But there are many issues that are misleading or sometimes simply incorrect. It says "A new cycle of storms will begin any day now". Well, #SolarCycle25 has already begun in late 2019. An early report on this is already published. See 👇🏾3/n

Solar cycle 25: the Sun wakes up🌤️

Experts on the Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel recently announced the Sun has officially entered a new cycle, its 25th since we’ve had enough data to reliably recognise them.

ESA/NASA SOHO, 2012 - Brendan Gallagher
While we can expect #spaceweather to get more exciting in the next few years, with peak sunspot activity expected in 2025, the panel came to the consensus that this next cycle will be very similar to the previous – both generally weaker than the average solar cycle.

“While small and medium-sized solar storms are more likely during peak solar activity,” says Jussi Luntama, Head of ESA’s #SpaceWeather Office, “its important to remember that individual large solar events can happen any time, independent of we are in the solar cycle.”

#Sunspots! They're back!

This is my view of Active Region #AR2778 on the #Sun, yesterday 2020-10-28.

Fun fact: Sunspots are temporary, dark, and *cold*! (in relative terms)

Fun fact: There are MORE today!
(Go look: sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/)

The previous image of #AR2778 was processed into false color, using RGB curves.

The input data, started from the actual monochrome capture (using a green photographic filter), like this.

Just for fun, here is a close-cropped view of this #sunspot group. It's continuously changing, as they do, but it's obvious from hour to hour.

Fun on the #Sun!

Interesting outcome of the voting for the strength of #solarcycle25...people think it's going to be a moderate, NOT weak cycle! What is the solar cycle prediction panel consensus? 1/n Image
What does our own @cessi_iiserkol solar cycle prediction indicate? How about forecasts by diverse groups from around the world employing diverse techniques? Is there consensus on how the Sun's activity would play out over next decade? 2/n
Meanwhile the @NASASun @NOAA solar cycle prediction panel has released its consensus statement. They expect a weak solar cycle 25, which matches with what we predicted based on our solar magnetic field evolution simulations back in 2018. So I agree! 3/n

There's a single sunspot visible on the Earth-facing side the Sun right now.
Three Earths could fit, side-by-side, across it! Lots of activity around it, too. Look at those coronal loops! #spaceweather #TheSun
If you're curious what's going on here, the Sun is basically a giant ball of charged particles (plasma), boiling from the heat of the fusion reactions at its core. As all those charged particles circulate around inside the Sun, and at its surface, they produce magnetic fields.
The magnetic fields add up to produce the huge bubble that surrounds the solar system (called the Heliosphere), but there are also many (many, many) smaller magnetic fields, and some of these poke out of the surface. We see these as the coronal loops.
