(jr)

Today's SFI Seminar with ExFac Simon DeDeo @LaboratoryMinds (@CarnegieMellon), streaming now:
"A key feature of this is talk is that we make sense of what each other are saying IN PART by what they say, but ALSO by what we expect of them."
"Language transmits info against a background of expectations – syntactic, semantic, and this larger cultural spectrum. It's not just the choices of make but [how] we set ourselves up to make later choices."

Big News! I've been awarded a £223K @UKRI_News AHRC Research Development and Engagement Fellowship to construct a digital model of the #Janowska concentration camp.

This has been 2 years in the making and I'm so excited.

I will be working with Newcastle architect Michael Brown (who did these draft visualizations) to build a Historical Building Information Model of the camp based on a variety of archival sources. Image
One set of sources is the body of drawing by architect (and #Janowska prisoner) Zeev Porath whose visual documentation is held at the @GFH_Museum. Image

I ugly cried when I first read this email from my book publisher @EileenAJoy about Alternative Historiographies of the Digital Humanities, upon learning that my book with @dorothyk98 won the @AmerStudiesAssn #digitalhumanities book award: a thread 🧵
The recognition with the prize has been really healing. The toxicity of my field caused me a lot of mental health stress and started a debilitating depression.
Because I called out the racism of the digital humanities, senior white members of the field blackballed me and said I was toxic, warned junior colleagues no one would ever publish again if they worked with me. This was part of the reason why I left.

Origin Story: How and why I started this book with @dorothyk98 that just won the @AmerStudiesAssn #2022ASA #digitalhumanities Book Prize - a long thread 🧵 + Image
When I started this collection about 8 years ago, digital humanities had just started getting a lot of attention after years of not being taken seriously as “humanities computing.” Suddenly a ton of money was being poured into this field.
The leaders of the field were adamant in acting like this was just such a nice unproblematic field, one person even published an essay where he said digital humanities were the golden retrievers of the English department.

Oui. Vraiment. a fortune-telling shiba inu reading your fate in french frie
le sujet est donc :
"in the semi-darkness of the late afternoon, digital humanities scholars reading open science on a holographic screen in an 18th century library with a cup of coffee sitting on the varnished wooden desk , digital art"

This editorial project was a real pleasure to pull together, and we at @umd_AADHum hope that others enjoy these projects and reviews as much as we do! There is such a beautiful story here about the deep diversity of #digitalhumanities work committed to the study of Black life +
As we discuss in our #ReviewsinDH editorial note, this issue is committed to highlighting the work of contemporary "thinker-makers" doing the work of Black art, Black study, Black recovery, and Black speculation— a natural extension of @umd_AADHum's operational perspective + Text: Our hybrid practices ...
Black intellectual work has *always* been distributed across the arts and humanities. #BlackDH roots itself in the deeply multimodal & multivariate approaches that characterize Black thought. Its been 2 years now since I began using Roam regularly... quite remarkable frankly. #roam #TFT
My PKM journey has been one of significant pedagogical trials and tribulations. I detailed much of it here: roambrain.com/roaming-in-the…
The TL:DR - it began as a search for a single tool to manage my pedagogical development as a college instructor and the curriculum I was developing for the 6 courses that I taught.

Humanities friends, stop using Google Maps screenshots in your presentations! Thanks to Technology™ it's easy and free to make maps from scratch that look professional (or at least professional enough), even with my level of extremely limited technical skills. A tutorial thread!
Disclaimer: I’m not a cartographer, this probably isn’t best practice in many ways, but IT’S EASY and that’s my main priority. Also, all of my screenshots have hideous hand-drawn arrows on them, I appreciate the irony that this is about making images look more professional.
Step one: download QGIS. It’s a big programme and it might take a while, but it’s open source and free forever. You can find the latest versions at qgis.org/en/site/foruse…. It doesn’t matter which version, since we’re just going to use super basic features.

Universitäten als Communitates also.

Was ist #DigitalHerrnhut?

Recently I was asked to write a thing for @PublicBooks, on teaching, learning, and ‘doing’ #digitalhumanities in the pandemic.

I ended up with a #BlackDH essay about ontologies of digital mediation in the anthropocene—which is a fancy way of saying that +
publicbooks.org/like-sands-thr…
For @PublicBooks I wrote about new and old forms of loss, of how remembering and forgetting are so tightly tied to experiences of space, to our experiences of natural and built environments. Black Americans have always had a fundamentally multidimensional relationship to space +
In "Black Haunts in the Anthropocene" I contemplate Black multidimensionality as an experience of hybrid temporality, so deep historical embeddness that requires us to constantly remix the present. Everything has a groove, but nothing quite fits together. blackhaunts.mp285.com

Excited for the opportunity to witness this deeply grounded and pathseeking #digitalhumanities collab between MITH, @umd_amst, and some of the keepers of Lakeland’s legacy.

This is the kind of project that illuminates possibilities for #BlackDH and community generated research.
As if this weren’t enough, you can follow this convo with a dive into some of the larger structural matters underlying Lakeland’s historical and contemporary claims. Which is to say, you should catch this convo on reparations and anti-Black racism...
The program is opening with Ms. Violetta Sharp, who is fifth generation Lakeland. She describes Lakeland as a vacation community founded in the nineteenth century, sited in what eventually became the larger College Park area. Black families were attracted to the area + work opps

Recently, @DumbartonOaks and @JSTOR Labs released the Plant Humanities Lab (lab.plant-humanities.org). We're all eager to share it in loving detail, so here's a thread doing just that. #planthumanities #digitalhumanities #environmentalhumanities 1/x
The study of plants' influence on human societies has two interesting qualities that drove the design of this site. First, it is inherently interdisciplinary, stretching from the arts through the humanities deep into the sciences. 2/x
At the workshop that was the inspiration for this project (vimeo.com/254555201), Peter Crane of @oak_spring said, "Interdisciplinarity comes most naturally when you've got a focus: a plant, a place, something concrete that people can bring different perspectives to." 3/x
