The Red Crowned Roofed #turtle is a #species of #freshwater turtle endemic to South #Asia.

Historically the species was widespread in the #Ganga River, both in #India and #Bangladesh. Extirpated from most of its former range but currently it has dwindled a last surviving population of less than 500 adult individuals in the #wild.

Their population reduced drastically due to depredation of eggs and hatchlings by Golden #jackals, #habitat degradation due to #pollution and illegal sand mining in the floodplains. They are also extensively #poached for their meat and shell.

Will need to clean & sanitize traps between sites to prevent spread of #disease & #invasive species, so the more durable & less absorbent, the better.
Maybe capped & sealed PVC pipe floats could work? Any other ideas? 💡🐢

By the mid-20th century, threats like overfishing and overharvesting of eggs had driven the species to the brink.
The recovery effort, led by @WCSMyanmar, @TurtleSurvival and Myanmar Forest Department, involves:

#Dog - Downward Facing Dog aka Adho Mukha Svanasana. Its a popular pose which is also a part of the Surya Namaskar. This helps to increase flexibility and release tension. If you have dogs around, you would have noticed that dogs stretch their body in this pose.

My fave bird is the endangered Visayan tarictic hornbill 🥰 In the wild, this species can now only be found in Negros and Panay islands. Follow Talarak Foundation on IG for news on their captive breeding program for these. #IBD2020 #BiodiversityDay
Staying with island endemics theme, here's a Visayan spotted deer. They're endangered. Endemic to West Visayan region but presently only known from forest patches in Negros & Panay. @silliman_u CENTROP has a captive breeding program for this species. #IBD2020 #BiodiversityDay

Highlights: a feisty female painted #turtle , & SO MANY blue spotted #salamanders , boreal chorus #frogs , & wood frogs.

South Asian #turtles face extreme threats to their survival because of habitat loss, poaching and uncontrolled hunting. While assurance colonies are important to protect critically endangered species, how much attention are we paying to find out what is their natural history...

There's been so much hype about #Zanzibar, but at the same time, a few people weren't particularly thrilled. Had to go find out for myself ,so some friends and I planned a trip. What I think? Top rating for beaches, good food, so much to see, history. Read this thread... #Travel
From #DaresSalaam, you have the options of flying or going by ferry to #Zanzibar. On the other hand, you could fly directly there. We spent a few days in Dar, then we went by ferry...it cost $35 per person for economy and $50 per person for VIP. We travelled in the VIP section.
My #HerpFall2018 class at @SCSUCOSE has their first #fieldwork lab tomorrow! Students will spend the afternoon checking these traps and surveying nearby sites for #amphibians and #reptiles 1/2
A @SCSUCOSE #biology grad student & I found a DOR Blanding's & painted turtle, & 3 DOR common garter #snakes while setting traps for #HerpFall2018 . The Blanding's #turtle is threatened in #Minnesota & reporting sightings like this can be useful for ongoing conservation efforts
This #FrogFriday I netted up some beautiful gray tree #frog #tadpoles (Hyla chrysoscelis or versicolor) and this gorgeous northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens) from a small, boggy wetland. 1/n
I also chased (and consistently missed) several mink #frogs (Lithobates septentrionalis). These crafty ranids are said to have a foul, onion-y smell, so I was bummed not to get one in hand. Something to look forward to for the next #FrogFriday in #Minnesota ! 2/n
Although it was #FrogFriday , there were other critters out and about, too. Including a pair of Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) and a few turtles (this one is a painted #turtle [Chrysemys picta]). 3/3
