OK, hello and let's go as I #livetweet during a watch of ep 1 of #PrehistoricPlanet! I'll try and keep everything in the same thread. This is the COASTS ep - 1 of 5 - that will be streaming one a day on @AppleTVPlus ... Here we go!
Like all eps, Coasts was years in preparation and a huge team are behind its completion. I'll mostly be tweeting about science and not ppl but I will be mentioning some key individuals... #PrehistoricPlanet
The ep starts with a swimming #Trex. T. rex lived north to South east to west, across Laramidia (western N America) and was in near-coast environments in many places. Plus ... like just about ALL animals.. it was surely a great swimmer. We WANTED to show something new, and...

Indian cities are not typically imagined to be biodiversity hotspots. Aspects of urban ecology often get missed in public conversations about the city.
In a series of illustrations, we explore the different dimensions of Bengaluru's lakes.

Taronga Wildlife Hospital cares for rescued marine turtles, prior to their release back to the wild. Preliminary satellite tracking data from rehabilitated #turtles indicate certain sites along the #NSW coast may be important foraging & resting grounds. #ScienceWeek
Taronga scientists Dr Jo Day & Dr Phoebe Meagher are working in collaboration with Bioplatforms Australia, Griffith Uni, Dolphin Marine Conservation Park, Australian Seabird Rescue, Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters, to understand marine #turtle movement & habitat use in #NSW
The team are currently identifying the nesting stock origin of green #turtles found in NSW waters using #DNA. Stable isotope analysis then identifies key foraging sites in #NSW. Collectively, their collaborative #science informs direct #ConservationManagement.

Bellinger river snapping #turtles are a great example of Taronga’s collaborative work on pathogen discovery and commitment to #conservation. #SavingOurSpecies #WildlifeHealth #ScienceWeek #reptiles Image
When conservation-savvy locals raised the alarm that something was wrong with the #turtles in the Bellinger river, multiple agencies were there to help, including the ARWH who were responsible for finding out what was making these animals sick.
The AWRH found a nidovirus, one that had never been described before. This is also described here by @KarrieARose in a Taronga TV clip:

Day 3 in #ScienceWeek, we’re putting #WildlifeHealth under the microscope. From microscopic blood parasites to #whale postmortems, no 2 days are the same for Taronga scientists Dr Karrie Rose (@KarrieARose) & Jane Hall (@janeo1000) at the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health Image
Taronga's ARWH improves #Australia's ability to detect and diagnose endemic, emerging and exotic #WildlifeDisease that could have negative impacts on Australia's trade/economy, #biodiversity, tourism and human health.
#WildlifeCSI in the form of diagnostic pathology is a key part of the ARWH work too. It helps in many conservation contexts, including species recovery programs, for state conservation agencies, #wildlife rehabilitators, and scientists. #CSI

**NEW PAPER ALERT** 'Road effect mitigation promotes connectivity and reduces mortality at the population level'. #turtles #snakes #amphibians #roadecology @OntarioParks @PresquilePP
Road mortality is a major threat to reptile and amphibian populations. Using a 6-year paired BACI design, we tested if roadside fencing and tunnels beneath the road would reduce road mortality rates of reptiles and amphibians.
We found that road mortality was reduced for turtles and amphibians compared to our control site- great! However, we found no effect of the mitigation on snake mortality - not good!

Happy 130th Birthday to us!

The TTFNC was founded on July 10th 1891 in order to: “...give pleasure to its members by observation of animal, insect and plant life in Trinidad”.

This thread will revisit some key milestones in our long history! 1/n #130yearsofTTFNC Image
In 1892, the first issue of our peer-reviewed journal was published as an outlet for our members to publish interesting and novel #NaturalHistory observations. It continues to this day as "Living World, the Journal of the TTFNC". ttfnc.org/livingworld/in… 2/n #130yearsofTTFNC Image
The first issue of our journal included J. E. Tanner's breakthrough discovery that #leafcutter #ants (locally known as #bachacs) cultivate fungus & feed it to their larvae, rather than eating the leaves directly as previously thought. 🐜🌿🍄3/n #130yearsofTTFNC ImageImage

That is how life starts. Millions of olive Ridley turtles started their journey from Odisha coasts as we are locked inside. Under close watch of forest department. One of the natures extravaganza. Sharing as received.
Each year millions of turtles reach to coasts with perfect synchronization for laying eggs, phenomenon is called as Arribada. New one comes put after 40-45 days.

It is said that mass nesting of #Turtles is a phenomenon as old as dinosaurs. 2/n
This mass nesting is a strategy to protect them from danger. To distribute the threat.

when turtles arrive on coast if they found disturbance they don't lay eggs. Some will dig the hole but if disturbance is there they will run away. Looking for suitable site & time. 3/n

The Forest and Environment Department in Andhra Pradesh has released over 350 baby marine #turtles into the sea in #Visakhapatnam on March 24.
Over 50,000 eggs were collected in Visakhapatnam, out of which 5000 hatchlings have been released so far, reported Deccan Herald.
The survival of ancient marine turtles is in danger today due to human activities. In 2020, the United Nations member states started long-awaited talks on a treaty that would regulate the high seas.

#Turtle folks - if you've built your own basking #traps , what have you used for floats? Am looking to replicate design in @tony_gamble1 (2006) pub, but want to avoid using Styrofoam if possible (and affordable).

1/n Image
Will need to clean & sanitize traps between sites to prevent spread of #disease & #invasive species, so the more durable & less absorbent, the better.

Maybe capped & sealed PVC pipe floats could work? Any other ideas? 💡🐢

Traps set for #HerpFall2020 ‘s first #fieldwork lab! Stay tuned, we check them tomorrow! 🤞🏼 🐸 🐢

I used AMPLE bait. If we don’t catch any #turtles 🐢 I will take it as a personal shun 😉 ImageImage
Update:

SUCCESS! Painted #turtles & 2 amorous common snapping turtles is our traps! Students took the photos, will post when they share.

Let’s just say that’s the biggest common snapper I’ve had to coax out of a hoop net (~35 lbs, head as big as my fist!) 😅😬
My face when I saw both of them in the trap, and her chonky self

Me and the family went to ZSL #LondonZoo today, had a great time and saw all the #animals. Here's a short thread. Some highlights: Western lowland gorilla, Sumatran tiger, Komodo dragon, Galapagos giant tortoise... ImageImageImageImage
Just a few of the literally 100s of birds at #LondonZoo: Woolly-necked stork, Northern crested caracaras (big, semi-terrestrial American falcons) and Red and yellow barbet. Barbets are members of the woodpecker group; some are close kin of toucans. #birds #animals #zoos ImageImageImage
Some #reptiles: the remarkably yellow Cuming's water monitor, an awesome Reticulated python (cue #HarryPotter link), Big-headed turtle (able to climb, prehensile-tailed) and Rio Fuerte beaded lizard... #lizards #snakes #squamates #turtles ImageImageImageImage

Out of curiosity, what is the #herpetology Twitter take on ordering #herps (#amphibians or #reptiles ) for dissection in classes from companies like Carolina or others?

#PlzRT & comment below
My current vote: uncertain leaning towards being against it.

Primarily bc I can't always confirm where the animals are sourced from. Are they farmed (perhaps the case for bull #frogs but prob not for other #amphibians or for non- #turtles )? If not, is take sustainable?
Update: I asked & Carolina responded! They source their Ambystoma from the bait industry.

We have been seeing the devastating news of the last known female #Rafetus swinhoei’s death. While we talk of captive breeding and building assurance colonies, I have a few thoughts. A thread. Disclaimer: This thread is about South Asia and mostly India. #Turtles #Tortoises
South Asian #turtles face extreme threats to their survival because of habitat loss, poaching and uncontrolled hunting. While assurance colonies are important to protect critically endangered species, how much attention are we paying to find out what is their natural history...
What is the ecology of these threatened species? What are we doing to ensure their survival in the wild?
