Have enjoyed reading some of the work by Davis & Grayson on quantifying #color, hue, % coverage in #newts and other animals.
They used Fovea Pro, a Photoshop add in. The newer version (QIA-64) costs ~$800 😬

Am also considering the methods of Paterson & Blouin-Demers where they quantify continuous variation in throat color in #lizards using Adobe & ultimately analysis in #imageJ (but haven't had time to test it out yet)

Challenged the #HerpFall2019 class to a timed writing competition for bonus points (and bragging rights).
They had 12 minutes to work in teams and write a response to this prompt:

Here's a little more of how I became a #herpetologist:
As a kid, I loved looking at (and when I could, catching) various critters. On the plains of southeastern Wyoming, that meant a lot of toads (Anaxyrus), tiger salamanders (Ambystoma mavortium) & gartersnakes (Thamnophis). 1/

I occasionally convinced my parents to let me keep one of these natural wonders in a vivarium so I could watch them even closer. I fed them crickets, worms, and whatever other critters I could find. Once, I made the mistake of putting a gartersnake in with a goldfish...
Out of curiosity, what is the #herpetology Twitter take on ordering #herps (#amphibians or #reptiles ) for dissection in classes from companies like Carolina or others?

My current vote: uncertain leaning towards being against it.
Primarily bc I can't always confirm where the animals are sourced from. Are they farmed (perhaps the case for bull #frogs but prob not for other #amphibians or for non- #turtles )? If not, is take sustainable?

Update: I asked & Carolina responded! They source their Ambystoma from the bait industry.

India is super diverse in terms of biodiversity! We have about 600 sp. of reptiles & 400 sp. of amphibians 50% of both which are endemic! Most of these haven't been studied in detail but much advances have been made in the fields of taxonomy & ecology.
I have been fortunate to have worked in the plains of north India, arid regions of Gujarat, southern Western Ghats in Kerala and northern Western Ghats in Maharashtra. Western Ghats are one of the hottest biodiversity hotspots of the world.
