Freshwater kicks off in north-east Asia (a location consistent with the geology, climate and animals we show) with a spectacular waterfall connected to canyons. Juvenile #pterosaurs - they're young #azhdarchids - have gathered here to roost... #PrehistoricPlanet
We know essentially nothing of the roosting or resting habits of #azhdarchids but see it as likely that they would have gathered in numbers (fossil evidence does show that they were social) in places that predators couldn't easily get to. Hat-tip to discussion with @MarkWitton ..

Let me start by saying that I am very sorry for all those who have seen their investment drastically lose monetary value in the past few months, and especially for those who have lost it altogether.

The recent weeks have been brutal, and many people have lost the motivation to continue supporting this project.
When that happens, I personally begin to recall what the fundamentals are in what I have invested by asking myself the following questions:

In 2019, a population of Booroolong #frogs was rescued & translocated to Taronga for temporary holding in light of devastating impacts on its environment following prolonged drought & approaching Black Summer #bushfires zooaquarium.org.au/public/Public/… #SavingOurSpecies #ScienceWeek
Time was of the essence! These #frogs live only 3-4 years & were all adults on arrival at Taronga. These critical but ageing founders possess unique genes necessary for their species to adapt and survive in an ever-changing environment.
Cryopreserving sperm can be stored indefinitely, and so we can ensure that the #GeneticDiversity of wild populations is retained by helping these precious males produce offspring. Look at the frog sperm here!
Taronga’s #science team collaborates on programs that assess and maximise #GeneticDiversity in zoo-based, wild populations, & CryoDiversity Banks (frozen repositories), to promote population resilience & the capacity of species to adapt to change. #RRAP
#GeneticDiversity within #wildlife populations relates to long-term survival. Genes affect many things, including body size, #disease, tolerance of temperature extremes, all of which can be important for #CoralReef systems. #Coral #RRAP
Every animal - #frog, #coral or #rhino - is subtly unique and diversity is key for populations to thrive and be healthy. When populations become small and inbred, or ecosystems suffer too much #biodiversityloss, ecosystems collapse. #RRAP

There's a reason the humble #frog is ARWH's unofficial mascot. #Amphibians are valuable #IndicatorSpecies – being highly susceptible to environmental toxins & many pathogens (parasitic, bacterial, viral & fungal) - & right now they're indicating that something is seriously wrong

Hi Everyone, @josh_frost89 here for today’s ##LowTideLockdown exploring the rich and complex maritime history of #Deptford. We’ll be taking a virtual walk along the foreshore from Watergate Street up to St George’s Stairs.
Deptford’s maritime and shipbuilding history goes back to the formation by Henry VIII of a dockyard here is 1513, a year after the one at Woolwich. The dockyard was built in the area around Deptford Strand and can be seen in this map owned John Evelyn from 1623 #LockdownLowTide
Our walk begins at Watergate Street stairs, with the wall of the Dockyard on one side and the Master Shipwright’s House beyond. Amongst the many shipwrights who worked here were the Pett family. Four of them were Master Shipwrights between 1550 and 1668.

Last week in #zoology my class went over #amphibians & I was struggling to design a remote lab that they could enjoy & do easily.
Wound up going with a frog call analysis activity using #RavenLite and am ☺️happy☺️ to see how well they did at identifying the 🐸 spp calling!

Curious for opinions from #wildlife #biology folks. Am teaching Wildlife Populations for the 2nd time this Spring and want to adjust labs a bit.
Currently, labs focus on understanding pop growth, CMR & other density estimates, etc. Most are Excel heavy.

Last year, we had two outdoor labs around estimating #squirrel population densities on campus, which students really enjoyed. This year am adding another outdoor lab around using #frog calling indices. (Yes, we shall be going out in the snow!)

A dozen blue spotted #salamander #larvae , plus one dead in a trap (with a massive belastomatid insect [aka "toe biter"]).
These larvae are part of a student's project, which he'll be presenting @MWPARC this August!

Plus metamorphosing or recently metamorphosed #amphibians of a few different species! (It's that time of the year in central #Minnesota )

And right as I was reminding us to "keep an eye out for metamorphosing #toads" I came across this American toadlet (Anaxyrus americanus)

The three ponds we are trapping for #salamanders had *deafening* choruses of boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata).

This #FrogFriday I netted up some beautiful gray tree #frog #tadpoles (Hyla chrysoscelis or versicolor) and this gorgeous northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens) from a small, boggy wetland. 1/n
I also chased (and consistently missed) several mink #frogs (Lithobates septentrionalis). These crafty ranids are said to have a foul, onion-y smell, so I was bummed not to get one in hand. Something to look forward to for the next #FrogFriday in #Minnesota ! 2/n
Although it was #FrogFriday , there were other critters out and about, too. Including a pair of Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) and a few turtles (this one is a painted #turtle [Chrysemys picta]). 3/3
