[CASE REPORT] Brain biopsy detects #Bartonella in brain lesions: A 28-year-old woman presented to the neurology department with progressive vision loss in both eyes over the prior four months (continued in comments). #Lyme #Lymedisease pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37153245/
1/5 She had a history of #lupus and had been on high-dose prednisone. A brain MRI showed numerous lesions in her cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres.
2/5 A brain biopsy was performed, and Bartonella henselae was discovered. Antibiotics were started, her vision improved, and the lesions resolved.

Very pleased to present our recent study of #endocytosis in #apicomplexans that draws on #K13 and drug-resistance in #malaria to learn of a highly unusual endocytic machinery in #Toxoplasma with a deep evolutionary origin. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh…
Using the #Plasmodium #artemisinin-resistance genes as initial leads, some proximity proteomics, and a good deal of super-res microscopy, a comprehensive molecular model of endocytic pits integrated into the cell’s complex (IMC) pellicle was achieved.
Remarkably, this superstructure is highly stable with the typically ephemeral proteins rigidly anchored at this site. Even more unusual, the complex is preassembled in daughter cells before the plasma membrane is even recruited. (and yes, Toxo daughter cells ARE gorgeous!)
𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟬:Wojciech “Al” Krotoski et al publish a report in the British Medical Journal describing a dormant liver stage of #Plasmodium cynomolgi in Rhesus macaques. These dormant liver stages, called "hypnozoites" are postulated to be the cause of relapses of this #malaria species

𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟭: In 1981, Dr William C. Campbell of the Merck Institute for Therapeutic Research in the US, published "An Introduction to the Avermectins" which described a new series of compounds with potent antiparasitic properties against nematode & arthropod #parasites.
𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟬: It was in 1970 that the full life cycle of #Toxoplasma gondii was described for the 1st time by Frenkel et al. Nowadays, the micro- and macro- gametocyte stages in the cat intestine are rarely studied, so the Frenkel et al. (1970) micrographs are still informative.

In 𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟲, the eminent parasitologist P. Cyril C. Garnham published his "magnum opus", the 1132-page encyclopaedia of #malaria parasites, "Malaria Parasites and Other Haemosporidia". After 56 yrs, images from this book are still used as references across the world. #Plasmodium
