🚨NEW STUDY🚨

Recent analysis published in @naturesustainab “use #biogeochemical simulations to show that restoration of the marine ecosystems can lead to permanent #CO2Removal by driving #OceanAlkalinityEnhancement & atmosphere-to-ocean #CO2Fluxes.”

Key findings in a🧵⬇️

Findings of this study suggest that “restoring mangroves, which are common in tropical shallow marine settings, will lead to notable local #OceanAlkalinityEnhancement across a wide range of scenarios.”
2/ Image
“The process is seagrass & mangroves influence the organic & inorganic cycling of C in sediment, with strong impacts on diffusive #alkalinity fluxes. In carbonate-rich sediment, seagrass & mangroves foster carbonate dissolution, resulting in increased alkalinity production...

🚨Paper Alert🚨

Marine protected areas #MPAs are increasingly promoted as #ocean-based #solution to #ClimateChange, but their contribution to climate change #adaptation and #mitigation remains contentious. Our meta-analysis of 22,403 papers brings clarity. Link below.

🙈Spoiler alert🙉

#FullyProtected #MPAs can can significantly enhance:

©️ carbon sequestration
🌊 coastal protection
🐟 biodiversity
🐡 reproductive capacity of marine organisms
🎣 fishers’ catch
💰 fishers’ income

🧵(2/17)
We identified the potential “climate pathways” through which #MPAs could contribute to #ClimateChange #mitigation and #adaptation. First along mitigation and adaptation dimensions, and then distinguishing among #ecological and #social dimensions of adaptation.

A mechanism for compensatory growth in Thalassia testudinum meadows under cultivation #grazing by green turtles 🐢🌱
Green #seaturtle populations are recovering, resulting in ecosystem-wide shifts as #seagrass meadows are returned to a natural grazed state. A juvenile green turtle swims above a grazed area in a Carib
2/7 The green turtle grazing strategy, with long-term cultivation of meadows (see photo) and high foraging site fidelity, is distinct from other terrestrial and aquatic mega-herbivores, and may affect seagrass compensatory (i.e. stimulated) growth responses. A border of a grazed (left) and ungrazed (right) area in a C
3/7 In a Caribbean seagrass ecosystem, we identify a mechanism for compensatory growth responses to grazing by evaluating relationships between T. testudinum morphology and growth, in situ grazing intensity, and canopy light dynamics in grazed and ungrazed areas. Figure summary showing that light availability at canopy hei

Welcome to the #EnvironmentalCampaign archives.

This story is about the Hands off Point Peron @pointperon campaign against the proposed Mangles Bay marina development in Point Peron near Rockingham, Western Australia.
The campaign began in 2003, although efforts had been made from 1964 when Point (Cape) Peron was transferred from the Commonwealth to the State to be used for recreation/park lands.

The Commonwealth confirmed in 1968 that the land must not be used for private development.
In 2000 much of the land was classified as #Bushforever by the WA government.

However, in 2005 Landcorp proposed a residential and tourist marina including 500 boat pens, chalet-style accommodation and an entertainment precinct.
