1/x "Bevor du neue Wege betrittst und dich auf unbekanntes Terrain begibst, sei dir deiner eigenen Stärken bewusst, denn du kannst nie sicher sein, welche Hindernisse und Widersacher in deinem eigenen Inneren lauern." - Joran Skald Image

Want to know why the moral panic around #videogames still persists 50 years since their popularization?

Because of articles like this. A thread.

wtxl.com/news/local-new…
This week a new article came out discussing a "new resource for #videogames and #mentalhealth started by a concerned parent.

While I am all for parental advocacy and education, this is more of the same moral panic, witch hunt we've grown accustomed with video games.
The opening line: 8% of kids and adolescents that are younger than 18 are addicted to playing video games.

Wonder why there is no source to this claim? Because there literally is no scientific evidence to support this. Image

Is it trauma informed care or retraumatising care? ✍️🏽
#psychology #mentalhealth #nhs #dclinpsy #socialjustice Image
Despite multiple trainings and workshops encouraging trauma informed care, many of our systems and actions do quite the opposite.
Bouncing servive users around services, telling them they are not 'appropriate' for a treatment, excluding those with a personality disorder diagnosis or 'flagging' them on the system as 'high risk' and therefore to avoid.

Capitalism is making sure you aren't struggling too much with your mental health so you can keep working in the same conditions that are causing you to struggle with your mental health.
This #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth the @Surgeon_General and I would love to know: since we refuse to support Medicare for All, who do you turn to when you’re struggling with your #MentalHealth—and does that person accept insurance or only patients who can pay cash?
As the @Surgeon_General's friend's friend reminded him, it’s OK to not be OK, so long as you can go to work and keep your healthcare benefits.

Sometimes in our services the 'entry requirements' or 'refferal criteria' can be quite rigid and exclusionary.
#nhs #mentalhealth #psychology Image
We know from research that a lot of mental health issues are complex with multiple layers of different difficulties, from trauma to eating disorders to substance misuse.
There are some services that exclude people who have a substance misuse problem, a forensic history, a personality disorder diagnosis, unstable housing situation, physical health issues and so on, as they deem it too 'complex to treat' or in need of other specialist input.

Have you ever wondered about the connection between your digestive system and your mental well-being? Today, on the occasion of #WorldDigestiveHealthDay
let's dive into the fascinating correlation between these two important aspects of our health. #DigestiveSystem #MentalHealth Image
Our digestive system, often referred to as our "second brain," plays a crucial role in our overall well-being. It not only breaks down food but also houses trillions of bacteria that form our gut microbiome & have a profound impact on our physical and mental health. #GutHealth
The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication system between the gut & the brain. When our digestive system is compromised, signals are sent to the brain, triggering emotional and psychological responses that can manifest as anxiety, depression, or mood swings.

🚨 Stop giving smartphones to your kids! 🚨

A friend shared Sapien Labs' report that highlights a deeply concerning correlation between early access to smartphones (& tablets) to young children and the increased likelihood of suffering from mental disorders as adults. (1/5) Image
The numbers are truly shocking:

(a) ~60-70% of women who were exposed to smartphones before the age of 10 experience mental health issues as adults

(b) ~45-50% of men who got exposed to smartphones before the age of 10 also face similar challenges later in life. (2/5)
I urge parents to resist the temptation of handing over a phone to kids always - while crying, or eating food etc.

Instead, encourage real-world interactions, outdoor activities & hobbies.

As parents, we have a responsibility to protect our children's mental health. (3/5)

Many click-friendly posts for #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, saying 'seek help', 'open up' etc.

Well, here's something to be 'aware' of

Recent research by @Rethink_ suggests 3 in 5 people with mental health problems don't seek help... due to stigma

rethink.org/news-and-stori…

/1
@Rethink_ It's a drum I've banged often, but it's still pertinent

Mental health 'awareness' is an important first step, but it's not an end point. And for too many, being aware of/acknowledging mental health issues is taken to mean the problem's dealt with

theguardian.com/science/brain-…

/2
@Rethink_ But this is wrong, in so many ways

Being part of an online community where everyone is open and honest about their #MentalHealth is great. Often essential. But that doesn't mean everyone enjoys a similar situation. Indeed, the majority seemingly don't.

1/8 🧠#TraumaAwareness🧠: #Trauma impacts us in complex, multifaceted ways. Advancements in neuroscience tell us it's not just an emotional experience, but a deeply physiological one. Let's talk about why we need to acknowledge this, even within religious contexts. #evangelicals
2/8 Understanding #trauma means understanding the brain. Neuroplasticity shows our experiences, including trauma, literally reshape our brains. It's not 'all in your head,' it's 'also in your brain.' This isn't a matter of faith or opinion, it's established science. #evangelicals
3/8 Dismissing the physiological reality of #trauma undermines the survivor's experience. It can lead to victim blaming, encouraging sufferers to 'pray it away', 'have more faith', 'self control'. This not only fails to address the problem but can compound the pain. #evangelicals
