The GoI is looking at hydropower to keep its net zero pledge.

Arunachal Pradesh will sign 13 MoUs for such projects. While this will help tap its hydropower potential, the human + ecological costs are high.

🤔Is the push for more 🌊power projects in Arunachal justified?

🧵1/6 Image
Some say 🇮🇳 has to catch up.

- 🇮🇳 has developed only 29% of its total 🌊power potential. The govt says Arunachal has the highest untapped potential.

- Once dams are up and running, surplus power can be transmitted to other states and help generate revenue for Arunachal.

2/6
- It entails economic incentives for locals. Popular newspapers have cited unnamed officials saying such projects will help prevent a water war with 🇨🇳through its control of upstream dams.

Was curious whether #hydro power in Europe will make a comeback in 2023 (after a bad 2022), so I wrote a little explainer. economist.com/the-economist-…
European #water reservoir levels in 2022 were very low. They are slowly recovering, in part because policy forced a refill. ImageImage
The shortfall of #hydro power is remarkable, 112 TWh less to date in 2022 than in 2021. And this is largely a flexible source of generation that often drives out marginal plants like #gas. Image

Good news from #Brussels
The leaked @EU_Commission non-paper on Emergency Electricity Mkt Interventions addresses the root sources of the 10-fold electricity price increase:
➡️Excessive profits of inframarginal technologies (nuclear, hydro, renewables)
➡️Gas scarcity

🧵 Thread
The proposals imply a big step #forward in our understanding of how #electricity markets should be designed
And watch out 🔊 because emergency measures pave the way to #structural reform!

Some key reasons & thoughts...
1/ Acknowledging that not all technologies should be paid at the cost of gas-fired generation is equivalent to acknowledging that:
📢 a single *technology-neutral* *energy-only* market design is not adequate – under emergencies & beyond

⚡️NEW REPORT⚡️:
Our new modelling report from @DavidSuzukiFDN shows that 100% zero-emissions electricity across Canada by 2035 is possible, reliable and affordable.

Buckle up for a #CleanElectricity thread 🧵

bit.ly/CleanElectrici…

#Climate #energytwitter #cdnpoli
This is the first modelling report of its kind in Canada. It goes beyond #NetZero to reach #ZeroEmissions by 2035, primarily by relying on:

☀️#Renewables like wind & solar
🔋#EnergyStorage
🏡#EnergyEfficiency
🌊Existing #Hydropower
🔌More grid connections between regions
Overall, Canada's electricity capacity grows by 2.8x by 2050, and the amount of electrical energy we use grows by 1.8x

All #FossilFuels on the grid are phased out by 2035, including all #NaturalGas. And no nuclear or fossils with #CCUS are needed.

NEW: @DrLeeJones and my book, Fractured China: How State Transformation is Shaping China's Rise, is now out! Here is a 🧵 to explain what it is about. 1/ cambridge.org/core/books/fra…
Fractured China intervenes in the International Relations (and foreign policy) debate over whether China's rise will be a threat to the international order. China's international behaviour is sometimes revisionist and sometimes preserving the status-quo. 2/
IR and foreign policy analysis approaches struggle to explain this inconsistency because they treat China as a unitary actor in international politics. The debate has stalled and become speculative, turning on to claims about China will do or become in the future. 3/

To generate electricity for NECEC, Hydro-Quebec will use 61 dams and 28 reservoirs that have flooded and destroyed tens of thousands of square miles of boreal forests, wetlands, and taiga.

Hydropower destroys rivers and forests, violates Indigenous rights, and harms the climate.
Most of the dams are built on the ancestral lands of Indigenous Peoples in Canada without their consent and without compensation. The Innu, Atikamekw, and Anishinabek First Nations in Quebec oppose NECEC and are suing Hydro-Quebec for violations of their constitutional rights.

(1/22) Our new paper @NatureEnergyJnl (rdcu.be/cikbq) proposes a solution to break the deadlock in negotiations between #Ethiopia 🇪🇹, #Sudan 🇸🇩 & #Egypt 🇪🇬 on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD) on the #BlueNile – with help of #solar and #wind power. Thread👇 Image
(2/22) The #BlueNile (Abay) is highly seasonal, with extreme differences in flow between dry and wet months. #GERD’s reservoir is so large it can store the full annual flow & deliver #hydropower at a stable rate throughout the year - suppressing the river flow #seasonality. Image
(3/22) Delivering hydropower w/o seasonality makes loads of sense from Ethiopian perspective, but overhauls natural timing of water reaching #Sudan & #Egypt. Behind many disagreements on #GERD lies downstream countries’ fear of s/o upstream having control over #BlueNile flow… Image

"For the EU hydro is projected to increase with global warming and nuclear to decrease...increased #hydro in northern Europe and a decline in hydropower and #nuclear power in southern Europe due to lower water availability for direct production and cooling of river-based plants..
"In northern Europe substitution effects, i.e. increasing availability of cheaper #hydropower, could result in lower production costs, while they would increase in southern Europe."
"#Wind and #solar production are not affected significantly by global warming. Improved cooling technologies have the potential to strongly reduce the negative effects of water scarcity, particularly for nuclear plants in southern Europe."

One of the best seismically stable hydropower project was #TarbelaDam. Bcoz due to the pressure of water & sediment load the active tectonics got suppressed. Before constructing any mega #hydropower project, pre seismic zoning mst be ensured. Rawal Dam lies above active fault 1/2
Because #WAPDA didn't bother to conduct the pre #seismic zoning and even the post Dam assessment report doesnot address the active tectonics of the capital city! The authorities still living in denial that there is no active zone in the capital city!
#KoynaDam incident was such a case where no seismic zoning was performed & an #earthquake resulted in a #Dam break with a devastating impact and casualties. Dam construction can either trigger a fault or suppress it. Local geological settings must be assessed thoroughly.

I recently had the chance to visit one of the most innovative #Bitcoin mining operations in #Norway

Conclusion: Bitcoin mining is necessary, not wasteful, and even superior to the alternatives.

So far most #Bitcoin mining is done in #China, with subsidized electricity and coal power, here: A power plant in Xiangshawan Desert in Ordos of Inner Mongolia
