A new fully funded PhDposition has opened at the University of Auckland in New Zealand for a potential candidate with experience in concrete structures and seismic/earthquake engineering. The supervision team consists of me Dr Enrique del Rey Castillo, Dr Lucas Hogan,
Dr Max Stephens and Dr Tom Allen, as well as a large team of industry advisors. The topic of the research project will be #seismic strengthening of concrete floor diaphragms with Fibre Reinforced Polymers (#FRP), and it’s likely to be mostly analytical/modelling.
This work will be part of a larger project, involving two other PhD candidates, with a lot of experimental work already underway. The potential candidate’s job will be to translate the experimental work into structural behaviour and global response, aimed at developing a design

Why do strong Earthquakes take place in Haiti? Does it have something to do with Plate Tectonics?
What are the factors that put Haiti at risk?
Learn more in this thread on today’s #GeoAgenda with our collab w/@Daniela_A_Gallo ! 1/n
A magnitude 7.2 (M 7.2) #earthquake struck #Haiti on August 14- west of the capital city, #PortAuPrince, and 50km west of the magnitude 7.0 devastating EQ that took place in 2010 which killed ~100,000 people and devastated the Island. 2/n
Both EQ;s were produced in the #EnriquilloPlantain fault zone, a complex boundary between two #tectonicplates. To the north there is another tectonic boundary, and this makes the Hispaniola island to be sandwiched in between a complex geological terrain 3/n

One of the best seismically stable hydropower project was #TarbelaDam. Bcoz due to the pressure of water & sediment load the active tectonics got suppressed. Before constructing any mega #hydropower project, pre seismic zoning mst be ensured. Rawal Dam lies above active fault 1/2
Because #WAPDA didn't bother to conduct the pre #seismic zoning and even the post Dam assessment report doesnot address the active tectonics of the capital city! The authorities still living in denial that there is no active zone in the capital city!
#KoynaDam incident was such a case where no seismic zoning was performed & an #earthquake resulted in a #Dam break with a devastating impact and casualties. Dam construction can either trigger a fault or suppress it. Local geological settings must be assessed thoroughly.
