It’s mid-Feb and two more weeks have passed in the 2023 Italian #snow-season marathon. Mixed weather, with cold air but overall dry conditions – especially in the Alps.
So, how is the Italian deficit in snow-water resources doing at the moment?

A thread 👇🧵
We haven’t seen much new snow since late-January snowfalls, and thus estimate half of snow water resources at national scale compared to 2011-21 (deficit: -45%). At national scale, conditions remain similar to 2022, which was already a significant #drought year. 👇
A recap about this plot 👆
X axis is time, from autumn to summer.
Y axis is Snow Water Equivalent, i.e., how much water we have in snow (the higher, the better).
Black line: median for 2011-2021; red line: 2023; dashed line: 2022.

1/29. 📜NEW BRIEF: Today we launch “PASSED THE POINT OF NO RETURN: A Non-Economic #LossAndDamage (#NELD) Explainer” covering what #NELD is, why and how it happens, where it happens, who is most affected, and importantly, how we can respond.

🔗Get it here: lossanddamagecollaboration.org/publication/pa…
2/29. The brief begins with a foreword by @UNFCCC NELs Expert Group Member @IrfanUllahCDO, who highlights that Non-Economic #LossAndDamage has been largely overlooked in climate negotiations and that urgent action is needed to address #NELD happening now e.g. The #PakistanFloods.
3/29. Then @DLodry of @LossDamageYouth shares the powerful story of his lived experience of Non-Economic #LossAndDamage in #Cameroon called "The Tears Of A Village River And Its Population" which tells how climate-intensified #Drought can lead to a loss of #Culture and #Identity.

An @insideclimate analysis of data collected by CA oil & gas regulators shows 100s of millions of gallons of freshwater that could supply cities and farms is being used to extract #FossilFuels—which exacerbate #drought. New from @paldhous and me. 1/7 insideclimatenews.org/news/18092022/…
But that figure may be higher. A 2014 CA law aimed to overhaul the oil & gas industry’s water-use reporting to keep tabs on excessive use. But as @paldhous' analysis found [code here bit.ly/3QVDJkj], the data is too error-strewn to do what the law intended. 2/7
Problems revealed by ICN reinforce earlier complaints about CA regulators’ data. A @CCSTorg report gave “pages upon pages” of recommendations to better serve the intent of the law, said lead author @DrLFeinsten. “I don’t think they’ve done a single one.” 3/7

[MEGA-THREAD] The 4.2 ka BP event and the Aegean (Part 1) : The effect of climatic disturbance in Mesopotamia and Anatolia.
#Aegean #drought #WesternAnatolia #KhaburPlains #Mesopotamia #SyroPalestine #AkkadianEmpire
1. One of the most interesting issues of modern archaeological research is the climate change which was caused by the 4.2 ka BP event in various regions of the Northern Hemisphere, ➡️
➡️ with the main characteristic being the appearance of a prolonged and persistent drought lasting 200-300 years (2200-1900 BC) and the effects it had on the cultures of the time.

1/ What if I told you - with the continent suffering another #heatwave and England in severe #drought conditions - that increasing forest cover in Europe by 20% would result in 8% more summer rain, with negligible effects on winter rain?

You might not believe me, but it's true.
2/ What if I told you that photographs over a 54-year period since the reintroduction of beavers to Alberta, Canada, showed they were associated with a 900% increase in open water and a "damatic influence" on mitigating extreme #drought?

You might not believe me, but it's true.
3/ What if I told you that if every household in the U.K had a water meter, we would reduce household water waste by a billion litres a day within three months and two billion litres a day within two years?

You might not believe me, but it's true.

#climatechange🌍🌡 is the greatest threat to human #health👩⚕️.
Here are 5 ways climate change is impacting our health and how the future could look like if no action is taken.

#climatechange #globalwarming #savetheplanet #climate #climatecrisis #climatechangeisreal
1. Extreme Heat🌡: Heat waves are deadly⚰. One study attributed more than 1/3 of heat-related deaths to climate change. Future warming could result in an additional 2K - 10K deaths/year in each of 209 U.S. cities. 2/11
Heart attacks & strokes can result from prolonged exposure to heat. The heart has to work harder to pump blood and minerals are lost through sweat. Extreme heat can also worsen pre-existing conditions such as kidney damage, especially for vulnerable populations such as 👴👵. 3/11

Question for twitter: Why hasn't there been a single new reservoir built for over 30 years in the UK?
We used to build loads:

1/6
#water #watershortage #drought #privatisation Image
Disclaimers: I made this graph by going through the 500-odd wikipedia entries for UK reservoirs and noting their completion dates (stuck alone at home with covid). Didn't include hydro-electric projects or canal feeders as far as possible. It's not comprehensive, but not bad
2/6
What I think this shows is that a +30 year gap in building new reservoirs is not normal. There hasn't been even a 5 year gap in the previous 150 years.

My May 19 to June 20th water bill not showing any better savings from last month. But, I did soak the yard and trees on May 30th before watering restrictions went into place. #drought
That said, apparently saved 4,488 gallons year-to-year for the same period. That's a 40% reduction. 51 gpd usage (including outdoor food garden and fruit trees).
Will see what July looks like -- that will remove the soaking from May, and new water-saving shower (Navy showers!). Still, probably 20gpd usage right now from hydroponic tomatoes will impact the water savings.

U.S. #drought conditions this week versus the previous 3 years. Dryness expanded considerably in Nebraska this past week, but other Corn Belt areas are slightly improving. More than half of North Dakota is now drought-free for the first time since Aug. 4, 2020.
Here's the same week in the previous four years just for fun. The core Corn Belt states have not often started spring planting in widespread drought conditions. The HRW wheat crop in the S. Plains was heavily affected by drought in 2015 and 2018.
Now versus a month ago. Drought has expanded in the Plains (HRW wheat country, Nebraska, somewhat SD), but it has retreated in North Dakota and parts of the Midwest. Planting into dry soils is not the problem (actually it helps), but the fear is continuation of the dryness.
