समाजशास्त्र में एक सिद्धांत है। "Power is zero sum game" का। मतलब जैसे ऊर्जा उत्पन्न या नष्ट नहीं की जा सकती केवल एक स्वरुप से दूसरे स्वरुप में परिवर्तित की जा सकती है वैसे ही शक्ति भी केवल एक व्यक्ति से दूसरी व्यक्ति को ट्रांसफर की जा सकती है।
अगर किसी व्यक्ति कि शक्ति बढ़ रही है बदले में किसी न किसी कि शक्ति कम भी हो रही है। मानव समाज विकास के प्रारंभिक चरण को "प्रिमिटिव कम्युनिज्म" कहा जाता है जहाँ सबके पास सामान शक्ति हुआ करती थी।
धीरे धीरे शक्ति का असंतुलन बढ़ता गया और सत्ता कुछ लोगों के हाथ में केंद्रित होकर रह गई। धीरे धीरे एक पूरी शक्ति की एक पूरी हायरार्की बन गई। सबसे ऊपर राजा, फिर सामंत, फिर राज कर्मचारी, फिर व्यापारी, फिर आम प्रजा।
