Supporting #EndDemand initiatives is a knee jerk reaction to a complicated problem. But NOT ARRESTING grown adults for adult consensual behavior (that is perfectly legal if they do it for free) is not such a crazy idea. It actually makes a LOT of sense if you step back a bit

Coercive interventions like #EndDemand and #NordicModel are knee jerk reaction policies that are not sound economic or social policies and continue to perpetuate stigma, discrimination and increase exploitation and violence. #ListenToSexWorkers and include them in MEANINGFUL ways
Meaningful involvement is not performative. It is not an afterthought. It means including us before you start, while you develop and as you implement programs that affect our lives. And INSIST on having #SexWorkers evaluate the success in an ongoing plan.

Yesterday, an amendment criminalizing the purchase of sex was added to the already controversial Policing and Crimes Bill. As much as Alison Neilans, the leading anti-prostitution campaigner of her day, hated prostitution, I know she would have opposed this. Why?
Because she knew that such laws were impossible to prosecute fairly. Laws directed against women who sold sex or men who bought it rested on stigma & too much police power. She understood that criminalizing one side would inevitably infringe on the rights of the other.

Firstly, there is always *always* a set of power relations involved in purchasing sexual access to another person. We shouldn’t celebrate women purchasing sexual access to others, just as we shouldn’t celebrate men purchasing sexual access to others. It is a form of coercion.
Secondly, I’ve been conducting research in this space for about 15 years. There are constant claims about the ‘increasing’ number of women purchasing sex, but with virtually no evidence. Let’s keep this in perspective: The people who purchase sexual access are overwhelmingly men.

It is quite unambiguous in its findings. The law appears to have failed in almost every conceivable respect. I will go through some of the more notable findings here.
Firstly, the report notes that NI is unique among Nordic Model jurisdictions in that it had prevalence data from before the law was brought in. No other jurisdiction bothered to scope out its sex industry first, so no one else has before-and-after stats.
Ladies and gentlemen, a parable.

So now it's a crime to employ a woman for more than 20 hrs/ week, and, if you're a woman, it's illegal to work more than that. (This particular law would obviously be unconstitutional; not the point.) But then someone comes along and says, Wait a minute! 2/
Our goal was to make women better off by causing them to work less, but some are still working too much AND facing criminal charges to boot. We need to focus enforcement efforts on the employers, who are inducing these women ("these women") to work too much. 3/

A major focus for us is preventing criminalisation of sex work. Today is the 2 yr anniversary of the Sexual Offenses Act in Ireland, which criminalised the purchase of sex, and doubled already existing penalties for escorts working in pairs or groups. #DecrimForSafety
Client criminalisation was introduced purportedly to protect vulnerable people in sex work, but instead it has created "buyers' market" with clients having the bargaining power. #DecrimForSafety #SupportSafeSexWork @swaiireland
