This is not how supply and demand economic theory WORKS people?!?!? #EndDemand initiatives for #SexWork does NOT enable #trafficking. Think about it. Let’s kick this #EndDemand can all the way down the road, shall we?
#Trafficking is a crime. Pimping is a crime. #DMST is a crime And they STAY crimes under #FullDecrim. Full stop. BUT we STOP arresting adult consensual #SexWorkers AND we don’t entrap their clients in stings. The BONUS is we ALSO stop arresting A LOT of victims of #SexTrafficking
Supporting #EndDemand initiatives is a knee jerk reaction to a complicated problem. But NOT ARRESTING grown adults for adult consensual behavior (that is perfectly legal if they do it for free) is not such a crazy idea. It actually makes a LOT of sense if you step back a bit

I represented @osezlefeminisme today in front of a group of UK parliamentarians working to end all forms of commercial sexual exploitation. Alongside me were @CATWIntl and @Ruchiragupta, Indian activist. We denounced the violent system that “pornography” is covering

Pornography is a billions dollar industry that serves as an alibi for Grave Human Rights Violations against women and girls & organized international crime. #G7 countries are consuming the most pornography worldwide. The UK was the third country for pornHub traffic in 2019.

@osezlefeminisme is a civil party in a trial called by the media the "French Bukkake" case, and which is shaping up to be historic with an already unprecedented impact: 11 producers and "actors" have been charged since september 2020.

Coercive interventions like #EndDemand and #NordicModel are knee jerk reaction policies that are not sound economic or social policies and continue to perpetuate stigma, discrimination and increase exploitation and violence. #ListenToSexWorkers and include them in MEANINGFUL ways
Meaningful involvement is not performative. It is not an afterthought. It means including us before you start, while you develop and as you implement programs that affect our lives. And INSIST on having #SexWorkers evaluate the success in an ongoing plan.
Our community is packed with a variety of lived experiences & we will share these experiences to help you reduce exploitation and violence. Come with an open heart and a willingness to listen and learn the logical way to meet needs of the people who need good policies the mostly

The UK’s proposed #EndDemand bill; a #DecrimNow history thread:

‘Prostitution is a grievous vice’, wrote feminist Alison Neilans in 1919. To her, prostitution was morally wrong & harmful to women. Then, she continued: ‘but it cannot be made a crime without grave injustice.’
Yesterday, an amendment criminalizing the purchase of sex was added to the already controversial Policing and Crimes Bill. As much as Alison Neilans, the leading anti-prostitution campaigner of her day, hated prostitution, I know she would have opposed this. Why?
Because she knew that such laws were impossible to prosecute fairly. Laws directed against women who sold sex or men who bought it rested on stigma & too much police power. She understood that criminalizing one side would inevitably infringe on the rights of the other.

As a migrant woman survivor of human trafficking, @ToMalaika calls for holistic services and survivor-based approaches when #AssistingTraffickedWomen. "We cannot correctly assist trafficked women if we don't put survivors at the center of integration and assistance services". Image
@MyriaVass "We shouldn't touch the Palermo Protocol nor the @coe Convention. In fact, we need correct implementation of Directives in Europe. We need to complement the current EU framework and criminalise the demand for sexual exploitation #EndDemand, as soon as possible.

Good morning! Will be tweeting as long as I can last at the #DecrimDC hearing! It’s gonna be a long day and if you want to join in spirit & watch the livestream, link here! #sexwork #rightsnotrescue #housingnothandcuffs video.oct.dc.gov/412/jw.html
No matter what happens, today is HISTORIC and the work of @DecrimNowDC made this happen. @HIPSDC @NJNP_DC @SafeSpacesDC and many other groups are immeasurable. It’s truly a win. This moment is a win.
@councilofdc opens w @charlesallen setting an ask for respect and the necessity of this debate. @JackEvansWard2 gives some history on the issue in DC & approaches to prostitution - all rely on policing, inc “creative solutions” which were considered unconstitutionally harsh

An open letter (thread) to @ewarren Sen. Elizabeth Warren, candidate for president of 🇺🇸

1/As a teenager and young adult, I was a victim of sex trafficking and oppose your current stance on ”sex work.” Domestic violence, child sexual abuse and foster care preceded my entry into
2/sex trafficking, which took place in eight major U.S. cities, including Minneapolis, Chicago, Denver and New York.
I sustained physical and mental injuries that endure some 34 years later.
Through therapies, I pieced my life back together in my 20s, started a family,
3/earned a degree, and like you, Sen. Warren, as a single mom of two, forged a career in higher education. However, at the age of 46, my health had deteriorated to the point where I suffered a nervous and physical breakdown. It is urgent that we prevent others from such a fate.

I’ve seen this report / thesis covered in multiple places now and the coverage has been poor. What is it about the sex industry that means critical thinking gets thrown out the window? smh.com.au/lifestyle/life…
Firstly, there is always *always* a set of power relations involved in purchasing sexual access to another person. We shouldn’t celebrate women purchasing sexual access to others, just as we shouldn’t celebrate men purchasing sexual access to others. It is a form of coercion.
Secondly, I’ve been conducting research in this space for about 15 years. There are constant claims about the ‘increasing’ number of women purchasing sex, but with virtually no evidence. Let’s keep this in perspective: The people who purchase sexual access are overwhelmingly men.

So I've finally had a read through the DOJ-NI commissioned review of the #enddemand law, which you can download from here justice-ni.gov.uk/news/report-pu…
It is quite unambiguous in its findings. The law appears to have failed in almost every conceivable respect. I will go through some of the more notable findings here.
Firstly, the report notes that NI is unique among Nordic Model jurisdictions in that it had prevalence data from before the law was brought in. No other jurisdiction bothered to scope out its sex industry first, so no one else has before-and-after stats.

Ladies and gentlemen, a parable.

Imagine lawmakers decide that women would be better off if they didn't work more than 20 hrs/ week. They'd be happier at home (even if they can't or won't admit it); they hate their jobs; women's independence destabilizes the family, whatever. 1/
So now it's a crime to employ a woman for more than 20 hrs/ week, and, if you're a woman, it's illegal to work more than that. (This particular law would obviously be unconstitutional; not the point.) But then someone comes along and says, Wait a minute! 2/
Our goal was to make women better off by causing them to work less, but some are still working too much AND facing criminal charges to boot. We need to focus enforcement efforts on the employers, who are inducing these women ("these women") to work too much. 3/

Hello! Thank you so much Neville Southall for letting us use this account to talk about our message. This is @ladygrew tweeting for @SWAIIreland, the Sex Workers Alliance Ireland, a sex worker-led organisation, who advocates and supports all sex workers on the island of Ireland.
A major focus for us is preventing criminalisation of sex work. Today is the 2 yr anniversary of the Sexual Offenses Act in Ireland, which criminalised the purchase of sex, and doubled already existing penalties for escorts working in pairs or groups. #DecrimForSafety
Client criminalisation was introduced purportedly to protect vulnerable people in sex work, but instead it has created "buyers' market" with clients having the bargaining power. #DecrimForSafety #SupportSafeSexWork @swaiireland

A thread on what it’s like to be a female academic conducting critical research into the sex industry - or a journey through my last month at work. #MVAW #VAW #EndVAWG #EndDemand #highered #academia
Invited to speak at a UN consultation relating to gender, business and human rights. Despite discussions of the Modern Slavery Act and trafficking, no-one really wanted to talk about trafficking for sexual exploitation. #humantrafficking #modernslavery
But we do, as a wonderful colleague has worked hard to have panel specifically on aspects of this. At the last minute, the line-up is changed to include someone speaking on behalf of a sex industry lobby group.
