There are several things that may explain why weâve begun to forget El Paso. Many people donât know the city and it may seems geographically far removed from the worldview of folks unfamiliar with the Southwest.
The victims of the shooting, mainly Mexican/Mexican American people, may seem unfamiliar to some Americans, beyond the rhetoric/stereotyping of the immigration reform debate. Many people probably donât see Mexican-origin people as the ânormalâ victims of racist violence.
I don't think most people understand the dailiness of #gunviolence in America. This incident happened within less than a mile of our house. There have been three men shot to death in front of our house in the past 4yrs as I've recorded in real time on here. That's madness.

The good news about the #PhillyShooting is no one was killed. Women and kids were extricated safely. The 6 cops had minor gunshots wounds, the hostages were safely extricated and the shooter was unharmed. That's all amazing. But the shooter fired hundreds of rounds over 8hrs.

This is another story of civilians with arsenals of weapons. That should be illegal. The cop who was shot in the head missed death by a literal inch. He has two small kids. In the #ElPasoShooting and #DaytonShooting more than a dozen kids were left motherless, some newborns.

1/ On Saturday 3 August 2019, Patrick Wood Crusius allegedly went on a shooting rampage inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. He traveled about 1,050 km (~650 miles) from his home in Allen, Texas to do so.
2/ Tragically, 22 people have died while another 24 were wounded. About 30 minutes prior to the shooting, Crusius published manifesto online, ranting against immigration and declaring that âthis attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.â

They were raising money outside the Walmart for their 10-year-old daughter Karinaâs soccer team, selling the traditional Mexican snacks of chicharrĂłnes and aguas frescas when the gunman started firing.
The victims from the fundraiser were quintessential El Pasoans: Hispanic and bilingual with deep roots in Texas and Mexico. Their lives revolve around their childrenâs baseball and soccer teams. Their lives spanned the border.

Grady has the imposing manner of a black preacher--you can tell he gives a powerful sermon. Grady also spoke about Trump & how lacking in passion his speech on hate was. He said, "Words matter. How you use your words matters." He said words can be healing, but Trump's weren't.

There is a serious problem here. The focus is almost exclusively on the president. Latinos are just props in some larger narrative. Its horrific.

The #ElPasoShooting is another tragic example of domestic terrorism being fueled by white nationalist, who unfortunately are given cover by the words and deeds of this President.
.@realDonaldTrump has directly attacked African Americans and Latinos from the first moment he launched his campaign.
He rode down the escalator at Trump Tower and called Mexicans rapist and has repeatedly referred to what is happening at the border as an invasion, exact words used by white supremacist to justify their terrorists acts. #RootOutRacism
