Fantastic presentation by Sophie Weeks of @polareducators at #ASSW2023 that made me think about how to communicate across knowledge systems🧵 #Arctic #Indigenous #IndigenousKnowledge #bridging #traslating #Westernscience #policymakers
with different epistemologies, ways of knowing, ontologies, understandings of nature and human existence, and axiologies, values, value judgements, and ethics.
Using #art to demonstrate that even working within one knowledge system has translation issues when shifting mediums from drawing to speaking or reading. The drawing demonstrated that objectivity is in fact a myth, having scientists all draw the same thing can demonstrate that.

#Decolonization is working well when the ilk of @sagarikaghose start writing stuff like "India should move past the decolonisation debate".

Who wants to go first to destroy her narrative?

#Decolonisation is just beginning in India. The Raj is still not dead in colonized minds in India. There is no debating that decolonisation is the need of the hour. English language is not a measure of intelligence.

We have captured media, captured politicians and governance who gives no regard for Indigenous People or Science. They bind politicians as admitted by Sir John. Armitt in the KPMG 2015 Insight Report.

A 🧵 for the anti-war feminists who argue against backing Ukrainian defence: an initiative delivering medication to survivors of Russian army’s sexual violence, helping women, girls & fellow survivors to prevent unwanted pregnancy and access safe abortion, that I've supported..
…asked donors to send money to the UA defence because without pushing the occupying RU & allied armies out of Ukraine, there is currently no way to reach many women, girls and fellow people who have been raped and to stop & prevent their rape and murder. A reality check. So..
Anyone who undermines defence in response to a military invasion needs to understand that denying people the means of self-defence enables rape, killing & imperial oppression. Doesn't feminism support a woman's right to self-defence against gender violence? Then it ought to…

BOBI WINE’S CONUNDRUM: Whether the SMACK, of 60 y.o. Bro Deodati Aganyira is sufficiently ‘The School’ for his first son Solomon Kampala?

In 1998, the post of HM SMACK opened up after a curious resignation.

Bro Aganyira was passed over for a much younger Bro Edward Bukenya, 32. ImageImageImage
Bro Bukenya (pictured), despite a faulty start, went on to score 15 years of phenomenal achievements, making so many envious.

Suddenly, @Educ_SportsUg invoked a dubious policy of arbitrarily transferring long-stay HMs.

Jan 2014: Enter Bro John Ssenkabirwa, from Caltec Academy! Image
The new transfer policy was resisted by many founding bodies for ‘shaking traditions’, non-consultation, etc.

The church even went to court to restrain gov’t from transferring Bro Bukenya to his alma mater St Edwards SS Bukuumi, @IndependentUG reports.independent.co.ug/teachers-on-th…

Is it “not clear that 'coloniality' is the cause” of COVID19 vaccine inequality? Maybe not for many (helpful article in that sense), let's discuss.
THREAD🧵#decolonizing starting w political economy: $trillions for North's corporate, R&D, university "capacity" has an origin.../1
First: colonialism was a system of resource extraction, slave trade, and global commerce that enriched the global North and has had long-running harm for Southern economies… inequality in resources is not naturally occurring/2
Empiricaly clear e.g. Nunn "the world’s current income differences could be explained by the divergent effects of European contact globallty, which resulted in a massive transfer of disease, food, ideas, and people.../3

Nice thread that punctures another dumbass theory from the denatured Anglophone class of India. I used to think we must #decolonize our languages. But looking at stupidity of this order, I think we must #demlecchify our languages.

Demlecchification: निर्म्लेच्छीकरण
Mlecchification: म्लेच्छीकरण : the continuous process of turning braindead about Indian culture and identity, through thinking in foreign Mleccha idiom and vocabulary. This is the natural consequence of colonial history in India.
It seems nobody was sneezing in India before the Mleccha occupation. This is the level of Mlecchification in some people's heads.

THREAD: What do Audrey Truschke and @AnnCoulter have in common? Hatred for Hindus and #Hinduphobia...and randomness on "caste." And, how do you package Hinduphobia, anti-Asian hatred and anti-immigrant hatred in one tweet? See pic below, followed by our response.👇🏾 1/n
Ms. Khilanani’s remarks are outrageous, but not derived from Hindu philosophy or linked to ANY religion. So why drag in her faith & reference “caste” - that favorite millstone hung around a Hindu American’s neck, no matter which side of the ideological aisle they may be on? 2/n
Firstly, @AnnCoulter is simply ignorant. Ms. Khilanani is NOT an immigrant but born/raised in US. But, she is brown, so that makes her a perpetual "immigrant" +unwelcome. It even makes her unrelated religious background a target. This attitude is un-American & breeds hatred. 3/n

Rabindranath Thakur on Bharat in his essay 'The History Of Bharatvarsha':

"Our real ties are with the Bharatvarsha that lies outside our textbooks. If the history of this tie for a substantially long period gets lost, our soul loses its anchorage. After all, we are no weeds.....
or parasitical plants in India. Over many hundreds of years, it's our roots, hundreds and thousands of them, that have occupied the very heart of Bharatvarsha. But unfortunately, we are obliged to learn a brand of history that makes our children forget this very fact......
It appears as if we are nobody in India; as if those who came from outside alone matters."

No better description.

HISTORIC BRAVERY ON #PALESTINE IN CONGRESS: w/ #GazaUnderAttack Israel's military invades Gaza with force like what killed 480 kids in 2014

Rep. @RashidaTlaib faced brutality w/"We must condition aid to Israel on compliance with international human rights & ending apartheid"

🧵
As #Israeli police-supported lynch mobs attacked #Palestinian neighbors in Haifa,

@RashidaTlaib spoke solidarity & said her Black neighbors who know what it's like to be killed & displaced: "The freedom of Palestinians is connected to the fight of people all over the world."
As #IsraeliApartheid tries to silence resistance to injustice,

@RashidaTlaib spoke truth: "Life under apartheid rips Palestinians of their dignity. How would you feel if you had to go through dehumanizing checkpoints two blocks from your home to go to the doctor"

A few days back I held a @joinClubhouse conversation with an interesting gathering of #mathematics teachers and other #educators, and I did talk about #ethnomathematics.
The conversation generated a heated debate among them.
A thread #Culture #Maths #KnowledgeProduction
In the discussion, I also mentioned African Humanism as new enlightenment based on the endogenous & indigenous techniques and methods to generate knowledge in the #GlobalSouth.
Someone was so upset and felt attacked by this.
Others by my expression #decolonize the #decolonization
My point was and still remains not necessarily to antagonize the Western way of knowledge production but put aside and to mainstream our traditional techniques that fallen in disuse and take into formal education as another way of producing knowledge.

Akon and his huge land acquisition moves when the natives have no land! Once again Black capitalism takes you to the same hell!!

Akon and his dreams of cities named after him on lands of people whose ancestors are buried on that land but have no land is violence!
Akon's huge land acquisitions in a country plagued by combined imperialist, capitalist, patriarchal and dictatorial plunder of communal lands leaving millions landless and in poverty is violence!
Akon cosying up with a regime that has forced millions off their lands in the name of development is violence!

From Amuru to Kalangala to Bwindi to Karamoja, there's no free land in Uganda!
Akon and the rich like him to acquire big lands rely on the violent state structure!

In 2017, I embarked on what I thought was going to be a small side project on who speaks in #geography and from where. I wanted to see how far we are in #decolonizing our discipline.

The project became a three-year undertaking and I was not prepared for what I would find.
2/14 Most of our journals are poorly equipped for #decolonizing knowledge. 90% of editors and 82% of board members come from a small set of Anglophone countries.

Editors and boards are more Anglophone than authors, which does not help in diversifying the origins of authors.
3/14 The situation is even more dire with handbooks and progress reports, where 93%+ authors and editors are from Anglophone countries. This makes agenda-setters a rather homogenous bunch, language-wise.

Was independence brought to Kenya by freedom fighters, or was it an illusion created by the British colonizer? A THREAD TO FREE YOUR MIND & OPEN YOUR EYES
#WapiganiajiwaUchumuHuru
#EconomicFreedomFightersKenya
The real factors that led to Kenya's "independence" were both economic and political. Allow us to indulge your curiosity for a bit 1/24
The economic reasons are rather obvious, especially when you consider that Kenya, just like the rest of colonized Africa, was created to be a raw materials extraction zone. Indeed, the Berlin Conference of 1885-6 was driven purely by commercial needs 2/24

Today is #GivingTuesday & we are using day to highlight two funds that will provide support to Black-identifying and Indigenous children, youth, and families that we serve. There is a significant over-representation of Black and Indigenous children in the child welfare system. Image
As we work to #decolonize our practices, move towards reconciliation, we are listening. And what we are hearing from our front line staff is that Black and Indigenous children, youth, and families need support to connect to their culture and communities. Image
We are also hearing from donors that they would like a way to direct their giving specifically to these groups and the support they need. We are pleased to share that this is possible through the Truth and Reconciliation Fund and the Out of Many One People Fund. Image
