I am a Canadian woman. I have stood up for the rights of women and girls all my life. I also have sought to be an ally for Indigenous issues and BLM and the LGBTQ2+ community. Everyone has rights. Whether they are recognized or not.

My great-grandmother Minnie (Who did not speak English) was told that she could not have her daughters back.
Undeterred, she went back in the middle of the night and helped her daughters to escape.

I woke up early this morning. I’ve been thinking about what I’ve learned in recent years about Canada’s colonial history. It’s a horrific one. It’s not some distant thing. The last residential school closed during my lifetime. The impacts are still felt. #TruthAndReconciliation
The individual and collective trauma inflicted upon indigenous people is horrifying, terrifying, shameful. It is multi-generational. Every indigenous person we know is a survivor, the child of a survivor, or the grand-child of a survivor. #TruthAndReconciliation

2/ In the US, Indigenous suicide in BOYS & YOUNG MEN is as common as the well-discussed "middle age white men" group, and late in life we see the escalation of white suicide.
In women, INDENGENOUS GIRLS and YOUNG WOMEN have as high a suicide rate as the middle age white peak.

1️⃣Recognize The current state of Aboriginal health is a direct result of previous Canadian government policies, including residential schools. Recognize and implement the health-care rights of Aboriginal people
2️⃣Government w/ Aboriginal peoples, establish goals to close gaps in health outcomes between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities (e.g. infant mortality, maternal health, suicide, mental health, addictions, life expectancy, birth rates, infant and child health issues, etc.)
Residential schools were never schools. Nor are they part of this country’s colonial history. The traumas and settler institutions continue to impact our Indigenous cousins today. My heart aches for the children, culture, and community lost. #cowessess cbc.ca/news/canada/sa…
This genocide is inextricably linked to the life I enjoy as a settler on Treaty 4 Territory and that is one of the truths that I grapple with as an uninvited guest on this land. Educating myself and understanding these truths is part of my journey towards #TruthAndReconciliation
My thoughts are with @cadmusd, the #CowessessFirstNation community, and Indigenous people across Turtle Island who have lived these truths that we as settlers are only now beginning to acknowledge. I stand in solidarity and am committed to meaningful action beyond my words today.

I’ll never forget the thrill I felt at the Elders & Traditional Peoples Gathering 2 weeks ago at @TrentUniversity, meeting #Cree actor/artist #MichelleThrush and #Anishinaabe journalist/author @TanyaTalaga, as well as being surrounded by some of the most epic people in my life.
Thrush’s solo performance of #InnerElder wove a beautiful blend of truth, laughter, pain & hope. Got Talaga’s autograph after she spoke about her book, #SevenFallenFeathers, a must-read for folks seeking #truth about how we continue to fail Indigenous youth.
