Tomorrow is the Day for #TruthandReconciliation – a day to acknowledge the histories and legacies of residential schools, and to honour the survivors, their families & communities. It aligns with #OrangeShirtDay, which carries a very important message: #EveryChildMatters. (1/4)

Tomorrow, September 30th, is the second National Day for Truth & Reconciliation in Canada. The "Orange Shirt Day" acknowledges survivors of (and those who died in) residential schools. The day was the TRC's Call to Action 80 and made a federal holiday last year. A settler's 🧵.
In the lead up to this year's holiday I was surprised (only a little) by the rapidity of the government's desire to re-embrace the 🇬🇧's colonialism. Particularly when the new sovereign is a religious crusader repeatedly rejecting calls to denounce the Doctrine of Discovery.
The monarch of the UK was accepted as Head of State in Canada without so much as a debate in the House of Commons. I hope that tomorrow causes more people in Canada to pause and think about the de-colonialization of our country and how to achieve Reconciliation in law and life.
The rise of pieces "debunking" the findings of the possible locations of unmarked graves of missing children who died at residential schools is deeply concerning. Framing these as "debunking" is harmful. Here's why. A🧵
The initial media response to the findings from Kamloops did contain misleading information. Part of this was a lack of knowledge about how ground-penetrating radar works. Part of this was about terminology.
Inaccurate reporting, however, doesn't mean that there aren't thousands of graves of children who died at residential schools, most of which are unmarked, even if they were initially marked when buried.

My 73 year old mum was medivac’d to Ottawa today in order to have a diagnostic procedure that is normally available in Iqaluit.

…the St Andrew’s Wesley United Church in Vancouver have commissioned Squamish Nation artist Xwalacktun, OBC, to design a Coast Salish house post. This piece will honour the children who were lost, and tell the story without burying the history. 2/x
