The above tweet is not to say that conditions of confinement in U.S. jails are generally acceptable; they are not. We consistently subject pre-trial (and post-conviction) prisoners to inhumane conditions that violate all sorts of domestic and international law.
It's just that most of America has not historically cared about conditions in jails because the imprisoned population across the country is overwhelmingly African American. #structuralracism

2/ The 2020 U.S. Census estimated that 33% of people in the United States identify as members of racial or ethnic groups that are underrepresented in medicine but less than 6% of research faculty are members of such groups.
3/ Only 4 to 5% of participants in trials of drugs submitted for approval by the @FDA between 1997 & 2014 were from groups historically underrepresented in medicine.
This is happening in U.S. & U.K. Once I got to the management & C-suite, especially in #NYC, I was unwilling to send #HCW into unsafe spaces to be injured or die.

The frontline is disproportionately POC, women. Those making guidelines or in C-suite are able to protect themselves. Leadership manipulates data/definitions, then shames, gaslights. Non-clinicians hired to override #HCW with “opinion.” Those at frontline who speak up: fired.
Who is among these flags (& whose loved ones)? It is not those pushing out pre-prints or on TV nor those safely behind a screen from a second home. It is those at the frontline, working without support, protection, or even without pay (some hospitals asking docs to volunteer).
Our report on #policebrutality shows that the same violent patterns are deployed in different European countries to allow police forces to continue brutalising racialised communities; #structuralracism can no longer be ignored in Europe.
The #Covid19 measures have also allowed police and law enforcement to further brutalise racialised communities. We all remember the #MichelZecler case in France:⤵️
The many systemic human rights violations perpetrated against refugees and migrants in Europe with complete disregard towards the protection of their fundamental rights also clearly demonstrates how institutions in Europe target racialized communities.

Nobody likes 'BAME', but how to describe all 'BAME' ppl, not just individual communities where the matter is common barriers, disparities etc. People of Colour (a bit American)? Non-white (negative)? Black as a unity term (old fashioned, embraced less by some communities)? 1/
There's totally an issue with 'BAME/BME/BAEM' hiding even worse stats afflicting some groups, eg ppl of African descent (incl Afriphobia) & Bangladeshi/Pakistani (added Islamophobia). But why can't we use unity terms together with disaggregated data for worst impacted groups? 2/
The danger is losing unity terms because some communities are worst hit by the same issue that's also affecting other communities takes away power from the argument to deal with the underlining causes, fracturing an anti-racist coalition & playing into divide-and-rule. 3/
