Most academic writing is awful at concision.

It's always:

• Verbose verbiage
• Prolix prose
• Jumbled jargon

Horrible to read.

Here's how top academic writers tweak their text. ↓

1. 'Irregardless' is a word, but don't use it.

The dictionary shows it's a word but also labels it as non-standard and incorrect in standard English.

Use either 'irrespective' or 'regardless.' This shows the dictionary definition of irregardless. Irrega
2. There is more than one way to write the possessive form of a word that ends in S.

Most academics are used to AP style, where the possessive of a word ending in S gets an apostrophe.

→ James' paper

But Chicago style recommends against that for clarity.

It’s that time of the year🎃when students are deciding if to apply for #PhDpositions👻

Even though #Academia is far from perfect:doing a #PhD is valuable.

It develops unique & important skills that will stay with you forever

These PhD skills are totally☹️not discussed enough👇 Image
1. Ability to work interdependently🔁(independently & with others).

Doing a PhD requires individual planning, as well as collaborating and working within teams. The ability to dive really deep into both these areas *simultaneously* is one of the defining features of a PhD.
2. Self-motivation & drive

Doing a PhD can also be hard & frustrating😮‍💨. You'll sometimes find yourself working alone, with no clear goals on the project, and no end in sight.

Making it work somehow nurtures your ability to motivate yourself when faced with hard situations.

Here are some numbers, @laneygradschool. Numbers so large we can hardly imagine them. This is what the deans, presidents, and minions of the @EmoryUniversity made in *2017.*
#DeanCurran recently retired to a nice volcano in Mordor.
Q: What do they do all day?
A: Read my tweets. Image
Since the #university is private, we literally don’t even know what these clowns are raking in every year nowadays. This information is not available. @Kimjacobarriola what’s your salary? Or is it rude to ask?

#GradStudents aren’t included in budget meetings. Can’t IMAGINE why.
I shudder to think who the new *interim associate senior apprentice acting adjunct vice dean* will be and what they will earn for doing it. it’s just…gross. anyways, he’s gone— maybe distribute the wealth freed up by his obscene salary? It’s almost 40x what a #PhDstudent makes.

There’s nothing to celebrate, @laneygradschool . The upcoming year will feature #StarvationWages and institutionalized abuses for #gradstudents, same as any other. Bring your government issued ID and turn the beer bottles into Molotov cocktails. 🍾🔥 TODAY!!!!
❤️‍🔥 #antivost
@emoryDSAC we are running out of time before the start of the fiscal year. are you gonna rage against this fucking machine or not? @ravibell and @Kimjacobarriola are banking on your (continued) silence and complacency. Rob that bank.
#phdlife is a picnic, for sure for sure

My friend and I keep sending each other PhD memes to keep sane. Today we decided to collate them to send to our supervisor (we have the same one) after we submit. #phdlife @AcademicChatter @PhDVoice

A thread on how to choose MS/Ph.D. programs if you have multiple offers (from International Students' perspective, @Omviser1 )

Disclaimer: These are my personal thoughts and do not represent any organizations that I'm associated with.

#gradschool @AcademicsSay #phdstudent
Before I jump in, some background:

When I chose Penn State over my other acceptances (UIUC, Purdue, UC Santa Barbara etc.), my friends and family were surprised to hear that I gave up a top 5 school to attend a top 15/20 in my area.

Sharing my decisioning criteria below 👇
While funding wasn't an issue to me at all, I encourage everyone to think from a ROI perspective at MS or Ph.D. levels.

I read somewhere that an acceptance without proper funding is essentially a polite decline. $$ matters.

With the guidance of my supervisor and my mentor, I have decided to push my #chi2022 papers publications back. It was a hard decision after many days working really late to try and make the deadline.
I know that if I pushed hard, I could have a paper ready, but I am not certain I'd be proud of the result. This paper hopefully will setup the structure for my dissertation.
Although it fell on my lap as a result of a collaboration with an industry partner, it fit like a glove with my interests and I thought it deserved better than me making this arbitrary deadline.

Once #feralpests were removed and undetected on #cameratraps or other surveys in the Taronga Western Plains Zoo sanctuary for some time, it was time to cut the ribbon, and the apron strings, and release the #bilby founders. #ScienceWeek
Of course, all #bilbies underwent thorough health checks with the Taronga Western Plains Zoo veterinary professionals prior to release. #WildlifeHealth
“Allow me to reintroduce myself”… some #bilbies were super keen to get on with the program, digging out of the pre-release yard into the #sanctuary. Fortunately, their radio-transmitters allowed the team to locate, catch and return them, ready for the official release.

Great thread for anyone pursuing graduate studies. Here are my top 10 tips for a new #phdstudent in their first 6 months. #phdchat #AcademicTwitter
@AcademicChatter @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics #coachphd
1. Start with an attitude of gratitude. If it was your choice to pursue a PhD, it’s a privilege. Imagine all the people who would love to have such an opportunity to extend their schooling beyond highschool, to learn a topic in depth, but couldn’t for all kinds of reasons.
2. Don’t rush. Take the time you need to choose your #dissertation topic wisely (of course stay within the timelines of your program for finalizing your choice) - if you can, discuss with your mentor/s a few avenues for your dissertation and the various pros/cons of each.
