There's a carbon rush currently going on in the #Pacific. All sorts of shady characters are being drawn to countries such as #PNG in search of striking gold in the form of 'green' and 'blue' carbon offsets generated by the regions vast forests and oceans...🧵
The sudden demand for carbon credits appears to be at least partly due to the Australian government's continuing support for the gas industry, and the need for cheap carbon offsets to greenwash their image and claim #NetZero emissions.

The research reveals a region divided. Countries in the Northern Pacific have benefitted from the United States' vaccine rollout, and small island nations have been quick to take advantage of supply to reach high coverage rates.
But countries in Melanesia are lagging behind, with #SolomonIslands, #Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea expected to reach less than 20 percent of their population by the end of 2022. #PNG is projected to reach only 35 percent coverage by 2026.

Guys had symptoms and were sick for a long time before action was taken. One of the first guys tested positive was previously at the Kangaroo Point detention centre in Brisbane begging to be in a safe place when one of the guards tested positive there last year.

#PNG Covid controller David Manning has issued an apology for a "grave and unfortunate error", saying the previous statement was "a grave and unfortunate error".
Manning, who signed original the letter says he was not the author and he respects religious freedoms. "I humbly seek your forgiveness for this unfortunate matter," he says.

The new Pacific International Hospital contract that started out at $12,781,783.21 in July 2019 has ballooned to $106,526,285.92 and has just had its contract extended another 6 months and amended a further $10,891,766.00...there are only 125 refugees left in Papua New Guinea.
Then we have JDA Wokman/Applus PNG They're contracted for "Settlement Services." Their original contract value was for $6,123,458.02. It is now worth $139,437,000.00. It too was extended a further 6 months and amended a further $17,857,000.00. Again, that is for 125 refugees.

On US based academics excited about "getting back to the field" - I miss my family, colleagues, and friends in #PNG so much right now it hurts, because this week is basically when I have left for PNG every year, for the past 20+ years, for the summer months. 1/
I don't think about PNG as "the field" anymore at all. It is where half my heart lives. And not going in 2020 and now not going in 2021 has hollowed out my sense of self and work and life and connection. I miss @JohnAINI2 so much I physically hurt. 2/

China's Ministry of Commerce has announced that Fujian Zhonghong Fishery Company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Papua New Guinea Government
to build a $204 million "comprehensive multi-functional fishery industrial park" on the island of Daru under its Belt and Road Initiative. Daru is one of the few Torres Strait Islands that are governed by Papua New Guinea rather than Australia.
Former PNG government adviser Jeffrey Wall said it was a lot of money to spend in a small community not known for commercial fish stocks. For Australia and the USA the Daru island agreement between PNG and China is a threat as the Daru islands are not even 200KM away.

1/12 #APEC media: Australia paid many $Billions to private companies #IHMS & #PIH to provide limited medical services to #Manus refugees for 5+ years. Nothing to upgrade Manus Island Lorengau Hospital that’s a run-down, little provincial hospital servicing an entire community.
1/4 14 men were forced from Port Moresby back to #Manus today by police & immigration. We believe 50 sick men total will go back because PIH Hospital has a contract to be health provider to APEC. PIH is sending us back because of contract to treat APEC delegates & workers.
2/4 #JDA said sick men may return to Pom from #Manus & be treated by #PIH in a month. We have also been told that there will be no medical treatment in Port Moresby for us until next year.
3/4 We are suffering mentally very much. It is 1 year since the #Manus Lombrum Blockade. We suffered trauma because of the cruelty & attacks upon us. Many men feel no hope. 3 men tried to kill themselves in last 24 hours. We saved them.
