In 1985, to placate the growing concern of the int'l community on #PH under Marcos, Marcos agreed to a Snap Elections on 7 Feb 1986. Corazon Aquino & Salvador Laurel ran as opposition.
On election day, & days that followed for tally & canvassing of votes, int'l observers note widespread fraud & violence threatening the integrity of the elections. Upon announcement in Batasan that Marcos won, majority of people boycotted crony companies.

Born to Don Claro Recto Sr. of Rosario Batangas & Doña Micaela Mayo of Lipa, among 5 other siblings, 3 of whom died, Claro lived in a generation of great awakening. In 6 years time after his birth, #PH Revolution vs. Spain broke out.
Recto studied Latin at Instituto de Rizal in Lipa, Batangas from 1900 to 1901 & pursued Bachelor og Arts in 1905 at @ateneodemanilau, achieving the highest grade—maxima cum laude. He pursued Law in 1909 at @UST1611official & wrote for several newspapers to support his education.

Born to Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro, a tailor & a housewife, Andres was born the eldest of his siblings—Ciriaco, Procopio, Espiridiona, Troadio, & Maxima. Upon the death of their parents, Andres stood as breadwinner for the family.
First selling canes and paper fans, & juggling several jobs, Andres Bonifacio was employed as clerk & liaison for the British company Fleming & Co in Manila. He eventually became an agent of the company, but soon decided to switch to the German company, Fressel & Co.

The Lopezes of Balayan, Batangas were a wealthy family & a long-time reformist-turned-revolutionary supporters. Natalio Lopez supported moves that countered the corruption & abuses in the Spanish gov.
Natalio (died in 1886) & Maria Castelo had 6 sons-- Mariano, Lorenzo, Sixto, Cipriano, Manuel, Jose-- & 4 daughters--Andrea, Clemencia, Juliana, Maria. Not much is known about Clemencia bec true to social propriety expected of her gender at the time, she worked in the background.

#TodayinHistory in 1954, then journalist & peace negotiator, & future #PH senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. and Corazon S. Cojuangco, future 11th #PH president, were married in Pasay City, #PH. Their union was one of the consequential marriages in PH History. THREAD.
Ninoy was one of the promising & ambitious journalists of the time—the youngest correspondent in the Korean War for Manila Times. He was conferred the Philippine Legion of Honor by Pres. Elpidio Quirino in 1950 at the young age of 18.
Due to Ninoy's achievements, crossing enemy lines & diffusing tense situations, in early 1954, then #PH President Ramon Magsaysay appointed Ninoy as his representative to Huk rebel leader Luis Taruc. Soon after, Magsaysay was a volunteer sponsor of Ninoy & Cory's wedding.
#TodayinHistory in 1915, Francisco "Koko" Trinidad, actor & pioneer in Filipino radio broadcasting, was born in #Manila. His immense contribution to #PH mass media & #pressfreedom is still acknowledged as he mentored the 1st generation of Filipino broadcasters. THREAD. #History
He studied at the Manila North High School. Upon graduation, Koko pursued his passion in radio broadcasting. He entered @FEBC_ph as radio announcer while trying to pursue Law at @FarEasternU. Unfortunately he never completed the course. Soon he became prod manager at the FEBC.
But #WWII came. Even under Japanese occupation, Koko became director of stagings in Avenue, Lyric, and Strand theatres. With the destruction & liberation of Manila in 1945, he was immediately tapped as announcer for the U.S. Office of War Information.
#TodayinHistory in 1901, at the town plaza of #Balangiga, Samar #PH, Company C of the U.S. 9th Infantry Regiment was ambushed by the Filipino townspeople for the abuses on them. This would be known as the Balangiga Massacre. The Americans would retaliate excessively. THREAD.
The 1st #PH Republic, the 1st republic in Asia, capitulated when the Americans captured Pres. Emilio Aguinaldo at Palanan, Isabela on March 1901. Following the capture, prominent Filipino generals surrendered one by one as the PH-US War came to an end.
Meanwhile, the Company C of the 9th U.S. Infantry Regiment, who also fought in the capture of Manila from the Spaniards in 1898, was assigned to a small town in Samar, called Balangiga, and having arrived there in August 1901, engaged w/ the locals.

Born to Maximo Malvar & Tiburcia Carpio, Miguel was educated early via his hometown's school. Soon, he was mentored by Valerio Malabanan, one of the great teachers of Batangas who offered pro-bono services in Tanauan.
Malvar was a skilled businessman. After making a name for himself in the local sugar industry, his business thrived as was his influence in the community. He was even given P1,000 as seed money by Saturnina Rizal, Jose Rizal's oldest sister, to help his enterprise.

With the lucrative Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade for almost 250 years, much of the agricultural & industrial potential of #PH was neglected, as Spain focused on profit thru the galleons. This also bred smuggling & corruption among the merchant class.
The Spanish aversion to agricultural/mechanical work was an opportunity taken on by migrant Chinese. This neglect came w/ unintended positive consequence: it saved Filipinos from the exploitation of colonial plantation system & slavery rampant in other Spanish colonies.
#TodayinHistory in 1972, 50 yrs ago, a bomb exploded at Joe's Department Store in Carriedo St., Quiapo, #Manila #PH. This was part of a series of bombings that would be used as reason for the proclamation of a nationwide Martial Law by Pres. Ferdinand Marcos on the 23rd. THREAD.
In late 60s to 1970, public opinion was against any prospect of Ferdinand Marcos extending his 2nd & final term. He won as the 2nd reelected #PH president in 1969 under 1935 Consti. At the time, there was push to amend the Constitution.
Protests erupted, expressing sentiment not to use ConCon to extend Marcos' term. People suspect he would be made interim Prime Minister upon change of form of gov. The protests would be known in history as the #FirstQuarterStorm. ConCon began in June 1971.

#TodayinHistory in 1903, Act No. 854 (Pensionado Act), was signed by US Gov-Gen W.H. Taft, allowing the US Insular gov in #PH to sponsor qualified Filipinos to study as scholars in the United States. This was but part & parcel of U.S. colonial apparatus on PH.

After ceding #PH as territory in Dec 1898 from Spain thru the Treaty of Paris, & defeating Filipino forces in the Philippine-American War, the United States set out to cement its control of PH w/ carrot-&-stick policy of "Benevolent assimilation."
Part of colonial apparatus was to woo Filipinos by opening civil gov positions to them, & flinging American education access doors wide open to Filipinos—an attempt to remake #PH in U.S. image. The coming of the Thomasites in Aug 1901—approx 600 U.S. teachers—began this project.

The Society of Jesus (known as Jesuits), a religious order in the Catholic Church, was founded by Ignatius of Loyola and approved by the Pope in 1540. In the backdrop of the Protestant Reformation, the Jesuits were instrumental in the Counter-Reformation efforts in Europe.
The #Jesuit order arrived in #PH from Mexico in 1581 led by their Superior, Antonio Sedeño. From his group's pioneering efforts, Jesuit mission stations & schools were established. Sedeño founded the Universidad de San Ignacio in #Intramuros in 1590.

Since the end of the Galleon trade in 1815, #PH economy under colonial administration was forced to diversify. While there were gains in this shift, it caused disparities among wage-earners in colonial Philippines, w/ its effects being felt until 1880s.
Domestic textile, for ex., couldn't compete w/ foreign imports. Low wage earners became susceptible to diseases & unemployment. To alleviate these problems, the funds from Obras Pias (religious charitable foundations linked to the Galleons) was redirected to establish...
#TodayinHistory in 1944 & in 2009, two #PH presidents died respectively—President Manuel L. Quezon, while in exile in Saranac Lake, New York, & President Corazon C. Aquino, in Makati City. The former died while in office, the latter, after her term. THREAD. #history
With the Japanese invasion of the Philippines & entire Southeast Asia in December 1941, Quezon & select members of his Cabinet moved the seat of gov to Corregidor. After months, knowing imminent defeat, they were urged to escape. They left in March '42.
Quezon established the Commonwealth gov-in-exile in Washington, D.C. while campaigning for the U.S. reprioritization of the liberation of #PH under the Japanese. While doing so, his Tuberculosis worsened. The U.S. Joint Resolution 95 extended his term.

Founded in the year 1216 in France by Dominic of Osma (St. Dominic), the Dominicans (known as the Order of Preachers, or OP) were some of the leading scholars of Europe's Middle Ages. After the Augustinians, Franciscans, and Jesuits, they arrived in #PH #onthisday in 1587.
Although this group was not the 1st of the order to have arrived, as Domingo de Salazar, the first archbishop of Manila, & Cristóbal de Salvatierra, preceded them in 1581, the objective of this group of 15 men was to establish the order in #PH, sent to Bataan & Pangasinan.
