I grew up swimming in the beautiful beaches of Huntington Beach,Newport & Laguna. Now these beaches have been destroyed because of corporate greed & corrupt politicians like @RepSteel &other Republicans.

Due to the recent #ChevronRefinery #oilspill near #Richmond, I’m sharing “Refined?” a birds-eye view of the refinery. This artwork is in a series about water & land use policies… THREAD 1/9
…inspired by a talk by poet #GarySnyder. He gave us a quiz entitled “How Local Are You?” He asks: “Do you know where your water comes from?” “Do you know where it goes when you are done with it?“ “Do you know where your garbage goes?” and so on. 2/9
I didn’t know the answers to many of his questions and and he inspired me to learn. As I researched where my sewage & garbage go & where my gasoline is refined & noticed were all on #sanfranciscobay. 3/9

[1] Reports indicate that the #Venezuelan Floating Storage/Production Vessel, FSO #nabarima, currently located in the #gulfofparia, has approximately 1.2 million barrels of crude oil onboard & the vessel is in distress.

Why is this of concern to #TrinidadandTobago?
[2] The #gulfofparia is a semi-enclosed body of water located between #Trinidad and #Venezuela. The #marine #environment is a very dynamic system. Any oil that is spilled in the #gulfofparia will likely be transported by the currents and reach the shores of both countries.
[3] Presently, the #gulfofparia supports important #fisheries 🐟🦐 Many #fisherfolk in #Trinidad harvest #fish and #shellfish from the #gulfofparia🛥️ The livelihood of these #fisherfolk are dependent on a healthy marine environment.

Based on the data we have now reviewed along with an AIS playback, we have good reason to believe that a cargo vessel departing from #LaGuaira, #Venezuela has spilled its fuel oil following a possible failure. Vessel is currently broadcasting "not under command". #OOTT #OilSpill
The video shows free-flowing oil, which is not typical for Venezuela's heavy crude. Satellite imagery shows it spread rather quickly and shimmers in sunlight. This is more typical of a refined product; in this case most likely fuel oil.

The cargo vessel's name is NAUMA (9362827) ImageImage
What the @MarineTraffic data tells us is that the NAUMA departed La Guaira dock late night of July 29th for Guyana and set an ETA date of August 1st. Two and a half hours later, something happened. Speed dropped from 11 knots/hour to just 0.3; and then she drifted for two days.

For all those who said it's just okay to dig for oil in National Park areas - FIRST the oil spilled and the company can't clean it up (it's been over ten days). Countless animals have died in an endemic area
SECOND the oil has now caught fire.
Baghjan, Dibru-Saikhowa landscape.
To jog our memory, the Environment Ministry has just given permission for oil exploration inside Dibru-Saikhowa national Park. This riverine area is an enclyclopedia of restricted range, endemic species: Bengal Florican, White winged duck, possibly even the White-bellied heron.
From the grant of environmental clearance for oil exploration inside dibru-saikhowa national park: "oil spillage prevention plan be prepared. In case of oil spill, action plan be made to clean site." They can't even clean at older sites, so we reward them with newer sites.

With so much going on in the world with #covid19, I contemplated ending my #dwhstories a few weeks early--here is so much else to focus on. However, work continues on restoration, so I want to finish up this little project in the hopes that it can be useful to folks #dwhoilspill
Settlements…Money…Restoration Oh My! The #oilspill resulted in numerous settlements & the assessment of nearly $20.8 billion in fines and penalties. So, who gets the money and for what? If only there was a simple answer!
Everything about the oil spill was complicated, including funding for economic & environmental recovery. These flow charts from @ourocean don't have current names but the processes are outlined well. preview.tinyurl.com/w5woeyz

This week in #dwhstories, I provide a very broad overview of some of the economic aspects of the spill for further reading. One thing became crystal clear during the #oilspill: the health of our economy is intrinsically linked to the health of our environment.
One of the first economic dominoes to call during the #dwhspill was the #gulfcoast fishing industry. The Gulf region produces the most seafood in the continental United States. preview.tinyurl.com/vb6moqm
Unsurprisingly, the spill led to closures of Gulf waters for most of the summer of 2010. In June of that year, approximately 88,522 square miles of federal waters were closed to fishing, totaling almost 40% of all federal waters in the Gulf. tinyurl.com/rh53pgh

This week’s #dwhstories thread looks back at some of the complexities of volunteering during the #dwhoilspill response. #oilspill
Back in 2010, I served as Director of @joinacf, an awesome conservation org working in Coastal Alabama. We had a number of volunteer programs that involved local residents in education and citizen science activities.
We received calls by the 100s then the 1000s as the spill progressed, as did other NGOs like @MobileBaykeeper. We realized that what was happening was beyond the capacity of any one org & decided to work together to identify what, if any volunteer opportunities existed.

In this week’s #DWHStories, we cover the #DeepwaterHorizon oil spill response. Next week I will spend some time on the role of volunteers in the response, both official and unofficial. #oilspill #gulfofmexico #dwhoilspill Thread 1/
The coast was largely quiet in the week following the rig explosion. Initial official reports indicated that only a small amount of oil was leaking, and that the well would be contained in a short period of time, before causing extensive environmental damage.
The Coast Guard sent a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to the wellhead site to try to cap the well & determine whether the wellhead and/or the broken pipes were still leaking oil. Initial discharge estimates indicated that the well could be leaking approximately 1000 barrels a day.
