A full week into the #OCOilspill, we are over 1,300 responders strong with 10,000 public volunteers signed up (4,000+ from OC). To assess our progress over the last few days I joined the @OCSheriff for a flyover of booms, skimming operations, deployed crews, and more. 1/
My first impressions: we’re making headway. Most black crude is visibly extracted compared to this time last week. Experts tell me the spill is by no means on par with the ‘15 Refugio Beach disaster due to their swift response. 2/
In both size and scope, we avoided the worst of the leak. However, this does NOT mean that #OCOilSpill cleanup and recovery efforts will be short—or easy. 3/
The #HuntingtonBeach Congresswoman @RepSteel takes money from oil companies. She's pro-oil. Well,@RepSteel maybe now you see. The oil company & GOP backers are responsible for the destruction of out coastline & the death of our marine wildlife.

I grew up swimming in the beautiful beaches of Huntington Beach,Newport & Laguna. Now these beaches have been destroyed because of corporate greed & corrupt politicians like @RepSteel &other Republicans.

1/ About Oka Elementary School in #HuntingtonBeach. It is connected to the history of endangered #AAPI National Treasure #HistoricWintersburg, which Steel failed to recognize or help save while OC supervisor & now as a congressional rep.
The school is named after Isojiro Oka.

2/ Isojiro Oka was arrested & taken by FBI on January 28, 1942, for the sole reason of his Japanese ancestry.
He arrived in Huntington Beach circa 1907. Isojiro Oka and Hisamatsu Tamura purchased land in Talbert (Fountain Valley) specifically to build a school.

3/ They got a building from Standard Oil, moved it to the property, & it became one of the four Japanese language schools in Orange County. He continued to contribute to schools his entire life, sharing produce grown on his farm.
A “White Lives Matter” protest #HuntingtonBeach is being met with a lot of counter protesters near the pier and PCH. I’ve seen a few physical fights and shoving but police seem quick to break things up. @CBSLA
This man, who was waving a flag pole with a “Trump 2020” flag among others, was just arrested at the “White Lives Matter” protest in #HuntingtonBeach. Earlier he was involved in an altercation with counter-protesters and his flags ripped down. He returned with the flags. @CBSLA
A crowd has now gathered in front of the #HuntingtonBeach police substation where police escorted a White Lives Matter protester. Mounted deputies and police in tactical gear stationed outside.

This distressed me greatly because I was an avid reader, especially of history. I had tested for the MGM program at Edison HS (Mentally Gifted Minors) & was gutted by the rise of the fascism adulation I witnessed from the skinheads I went to school w in the late 70s/early 80s.
