As a disabled Jew, I am angry this #HolocaustMemorialDay. Angry that eugenics is alive and well, that antisemitism is alive and well.

In the past week, I have read and heard horrifying eugenicist and ableist comments that are torn right from the Nazi playbook.

Let’s learn. 🧵
“On July 14, 1933, the Nazi government instituted the ‘Law for the Prevention of Progeny with Hereditary Diseases.’

“This law, one of the first steps taken by the Nazis toward their goal of creating an Aryan ‘master race,’ called for the sterilization of all persons who suffered from diseases considered hereditary, such as mental illness, learning disabilities, physical deformity, epilepsy,

I’m need answers @AshishKJha46 & @CDCDirector – if you expect many covid waves a year, indefinitely & your only advice to people who're #HighRiskCovid19 is “stay home” - How do I finish my life (50ish more years) “just staying away,” & still be a functioning member of society?
Can you give people who are #highriskcovid a tax break @AshishKJha46 @CDCDirector @POTUS @VP? Your only advice makes it so we can’t get basic services guaranteed to us by our government like safe access to public transportation & education - so why are you making us pay?
It's wild @CDCDirector & @AshishKJha46 – you say this many deaths & covid waves are are good news and what we should expect moving forward, BUT your advice to high risk people is still just to “stay home.” How do you suggest I do this while keeping a job, having a family, etc.?

Dear @AshishKJha46 and @CDCDirector if we're supposed to expect covid waves to hit like 3 or 4 flu waves a year indefinitely and you're only advice to folks who are #highriskcovid19 is to stay away - how do you recommend I stay away from society for the rest of my life?
I'm in my early 30s- so @AshishKJha46 & @CDCDirector I'm looking for your tips on how to "just stay in & avoid everyone" for the next 50ish years? So yeah, how do you recommend I'm supposed deal with this half a century with zero access to the outside world you've prescribed?
Right now, @AshishKJha46 & @CDCDirector, it seems like you're saying that if people are #highriskcovid19 they should expect to have no safe access to basic services like education or healthcare and no quality of life for the foreseeable future.

Since Twitter is about to implode, I'll be blunt
CW: self-harm and suicide

Being considered an acceptable loss in the prime of my life and watching the CDC encourage everyone to leave us at-risk people for dead in order to move on - this has made me consider suicide almost daily
If we keep acting like Covid-19 is over, or it's OK to get & spread, we'll lose a lot of at-risk people. We’ll lose them to a pandemic we're spreading freely or to the consequences of isolation and neglect with no end in sight. Being left for dead eventually makes you want to die
I don’t say this for attention, I have a skilled therapist and wonderfully supportive family & friends. But I’m privileged.

For disabled and other #HighRiskCovid19 people, the CDC’s new guidance means more:
- Death
- Sickness & further disablement
- Isolation from family, friends, services, supports
- For those who cannot isolate but want to protect themselves & others, risk of public harassment 1/5
- For those of us who have to work or go to school in person, this new guidance will make it even harder to get accommodations related to COVID safety.
- For families who have kept their high risk children at home instead of sending them to school, this will have to continue 2/5
- For people living in congregate settings, group homes, nursing homes, jails, detention centers, this new CDC guidance will mean that COVID will continue to tear through these places, and people will have even less recourse to protect themselves. 3/5

1/ Thoughts about intimacy in the era of COVID...

First I'll share the serious stuff. In recent months as I reflected on being a #HighRiskCovid19 person, & the ongoing pandemic, I realized that if I were ever to date again, it might be difficult to find someone who would
2/ be willing to take precautions to keep me safe throughout the dating process. I'd need to wear a mask during the first few dates. I'd have to put off simple things like kissing until they took a Covid test. While dating, I'd need them to wear a mask whenever they were out
3/ and about, to keep me safe. I'd essentially need them to do a lot of things to keep me safe, in the early stages of dating, when they might not even know if they want to pursue a relationship w/ me. That's a lot to ask someone. Many people right now refuse to wear a mask, so

Did I just read article on bon appetit telling ppl to not eat iodized salt bc it “tastes bad”? 🤦🏽‍♀️

Was looking up what kosher salt is & this article starts w desc iodized salt “iodine is a halogen & makes salt taste bad”

Do ppl in this country not know why we have iodized salt?!
FTR you need iodine in your diet so you don’t get horribly sick w an iodine deficiency that trashes your thyroid [look up goiter] & there aren’t great sources of dietary iodine available to many ppl & iodized salt is a v effective public health intervention
Like sure eat other types of salt too bc it tastes good [I love black salt aka Himalayan pink salt for example] but you should also eat iodized salt bc you need iodine

How many times do I have to scream “they always were”? Hydroxychloroquine disinfo has incredible staying power, to the extent that I *continue* to hear abt HCQ supply issues from fellow rheumatic patients. #DisabledPeopleToldYou this was never in the past. #MyDisabledLifeIsWorthy
It is painful to me how accounts with major followings (not necessarily OP, am speaking generally) repeatedly write-off or joke about hydroxychloroquine when the next shiny covid boondoggle makes headlines, & then become shocked when its ongoing usage inevitably resurfaces.
Meanwhile autoimmune people continue to bear the stigma that our essential daily medication has garnered on top of the physical consequences supply issues cause. #MyDisabledLifeIsWorthy of sustained attention to this ongoing problem. #HighRiskCOVID19

Dear @CDCDirector

I am writing on behalf of Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF). We are a leading national civil rights law and policy center directed by disabled people and parents who have children with disabilities.
During an interview on Good Morning America on January 7, 2022, in response to a question about the encouraging findings from a study showing that severe COVID and death were rare among people who are fully vaccinated, you responded:
“The overwhelming number of deaths, over 75%, occurred in people who had at least four comorbidities, so really these are people who were unwell to begin with, and yes really encouraging news in the context of Omicron,

Disabled folk…as we are know, medicine has long held a major blind spot when it comes to disability. I think this gap is feeding into poor public education about the true risks of COVID, but it is hard to have this convo with MDs who feel under siege and under-supported…
…and are experiencing their own traumas. At the same time, remaining silent about constantly being left out (not counted, barely mentioned) isn’t an option. I am thinking here about #HighRiskCovid19 but also about #longCOVID and this reality
If we had educated the public from day one regarding the risks of long-term disability up and down the age bracket, rather than solely the concern of those most at risk of dying, could we have prevented many deaths and injuries?

Every Monday I wonder if the DPH will return to reporting on the weekend. I thought with the steady and growing increase in cases they would.
Speaking of cons, I know I would not be comfortable at Fan Expo this weekend, so I never bothered getting a ticket. But I'm really bummed that Christopher Eccleston will be there. No idea when I'll get a chance to meet *my* Doctor besides this con.

Making comparisons between hydroxychloroquine & ivermectin is warranted in some situations, but overwhelmingly it seems to be done without nuance. This perpetuates the invisibile harm autoimmune people continue to bear as our essential medication— HCQ— is once again in shortage.
I don’t say all of this for some woe is me oppression olympics bs or whatever you care to project— I say it because the difference matters. The severity of the harm done to chronically ill and disabled people is more than worth mentioning, it should be centered. #HighRiskCovid19
Don’t just act as joker or stenographer of the horrors we’re all living through— make the realities clear. Who is harmed by disinformation and how? Was the harm ever addressed? No? Why? What precedent does this set? What doors does it leave open? Do better. #DisabledPeopleToldYou

What makes disabled people #HighRiskCOVID19? I'm lesson prepping for next week's lecture on disability justice, so I made a list!

Heads up: Only the 2 items are directly medical. The rest have to do with sociopolitical issues related to ableism.

THREAD. (Please add to it!)
Starting with the obvious:
1. Medically, some disabled people are more likely to die from COVID or have severe cases if infected. Chronic conditions related to immune, respiratory, & cardio systems are major factors here, but this isn't anywhere near a comprehensive list.
2. Disabled people have to work. The choice to "stay home" is a false one for most disabled folks. We have to pay rent, medical bills, food, and other basic living costs. Further, many disabled folks are kept in entry-level positions in "frontline," public-facing (riskier) jobs.

I looked at a calendar this morning and realized that it’s April 3rd. Thread.

I have #LongCovid: more details of my story are in my pinned thread, linked below. My constant migraine started when I woke up on Ocober 3rd, so today is my six-month anniversary. Lots of feelings. /1
@bennessb in her as-always infinite wisdom somewhat prepared my for this by asking earlier this week if I mark chronic illness anniversaries, and how. Then, I mostly thought about how I interact with the anniversary of my knee surgery, which returned me to walking and dancing. /2
Like I said, I had a lot of feelings on looking at April 3rd on a calendar this morning. But I’m choosing to (try to) focus on how much better I (currently) am than I was in the fall, and how much less pain I’m in day to day, and how much more I can do. /3

If it really is the case that doctors and researchers are afraid of appearing to be anti-protest, and that is why so much of Twitter has gone silent on #COVID19, I gotta say, I am a little disappointed.
Y’all spent so much time building up credibility in a moment when so many wanted to deny the pandemic was even happening. Why fight so hard for that voice and then stop using it?
I also find some of the “racism is a public health issue, too” arguments a little tortuous. Racism absolutely has wide-ranging effects on every possible health outcome, including #COVID19, but we are not going to end racism in the next few months or even years.

This afternoon the inevitable happened. I had an accident in my wheelchair, whilst walking my dog, because a walker didn’t keep a safe distance. Lots of people offered to help - which I had to refuse - because social distancing. I haven’t felt so vulnerable for a long time. 1/8
We are both ok and not hurt, but we were in an unsafe position for 10 minutes or so whilst we waited for my husband to come and help. All because someone didn’t simply step out of the way. I tried to put as much distance between us as possible 2/8
And by doing so I misjudged the kerb (the joy of #CerebralPalsy and spatial awareness). I ended up with the front half of my wheelchair in the road, my dog in the road, and the back half of my wheelchair stuck on the kerb thanks to my anti-tip wheels 3/8

Hi, @realDonaldTrump

You should meet the Americans you’re sentencing to death when you suggest we stop practicing containment measures for the good of the economy.

This is Owen. He has allergies & chronic lung inflammation. He’s 14. And he deserves a better President than you.
Owen’s in the gifted program & is a freshman in high school. He wants to be a writer or an actor when he grows up. I hope he’ll get that chance.

I’m his mom, Kaz. I have a genetic disorder that can cause lung disease. I also have an 8 year old daughter.
#HighRiskCovid19
@realDonaldTrump has concluded that some people will have to die. He’s willing to give up on our most vulnerable populations to save the stock market and the 1%.

I’m not giving up on Owen. I hope you won’t either.

Economies can recover.
Dead people can’t.

Fuck.
Phone call from Home Help agency, they’re suspending their service, so I will no longer get help with cleaning, bed changing, cleaning bathroom, washing up. Don’t know how I’m going to cope. I’m also furious that they’re laying off all their part time staff #HighRiskCovid19
My home help has been coming for 7 years, suddenly she’s out of work. She’s a single Mum with 3 kids. What’s going to happen to her? #HighRiskCovid19
This is on top of other Carer not being able to come: no support. The same is the case for my very elderly parents, my Mum is very high risk with bronchiectasis & asthma, my Dad has Coeliac disease so can’t eat most ready meals, won’t get cleaning, bed changed #HighRiskCovid19
