Curious for opinions from #wildlife #biology folks. Am teaching Wildlife Populations for the 2nd time this Spring and want to adjust labs a bit.
Currently, labs focus on understanding pop growth, CMR & other density estimates, etc. Most are Excel heavy.

Last year, we had two outdoor labs around estimating #squirrel population densities on campus, which students really enjoyed. This year am adding another outdoor lab around using #frog calling indices. (Yes, we shall be going out in the snow!)

Hey everyone! I'm very honored and excited to be talking #herps with you today
Here's a little more of how I became a #herpetologist:
As a kid, I loved looking at (and when I could, catching) various critters. On the plains of southeastern Wyoming, that meant a lot of toads (Anaxyrus), tiger salamanders (Ambystoma mavortium) & gartersnakes (Thamnophis). 1/

I occasionally convinced my parents to let me keep one of these natural wonders in a vivarium so I could watch them even closer. I fed them crickets, worms, and whatever other critters I could find. Once, I made the mistake of putting a gartersnake in with a goldfish...

Turned up 7 species in central MN during #fieldwork today!
Highlights: a feisty female painted #turtle , & SO MANY blue spotted #salamanders , boreal chorus #frogs , & wood frogs.
I think it’ll be a fun year 😊

Spent yesterday afternoon with an undergrad researcher (Alex) hoping to find breeding blue-spotted #salamanders

Didn't see any sally activity, but other #amphibians were active!

The three ponds we are trapping for #salamanders had *deafening* choruses of boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata).
Here's male chorus #frog . You can't see it in the pic, but the skin of their throats turns yellow when they've been calling.

Wood frog males were calling while supported by submerged, dead grasses in another pond we checked for #salamanders .
