"In March 2023 the #Forest #Conservation Amendment bill was plaed before the LokSabha. Ms Prakriti Srivastava,IFS (PCCF #Kerala) & I jointly wrote a submission to the Joint Parliamentary Committee, link provided at the end of the (long) thread. 1/n
highlighting the imp pts:
Fundamental changes in the proposed bill:
a)Limits the scope & ambit of the original FCA (1980), removing crucial safeguards from a vast majority of India's #biodiverse rich #forests, thereby opens the floodgates for diversion for other uses
2/n
b) Undoes many provisions of the existing #ForestConservationAct; c) dilutes the 202/1996 #SupremeCourt ‘Godavarman’ #judgement, overturns its #conservation gains
(d) facilitates privatisation of forests to create plantations
e) shifts focus from conservation of forests to 3/n

1/29. 📜NEW BRIEF: Today we launch “PASSED THE POINT OF NO RETURN: A Non-Economic #LossAndDamage (#NELD) Explainer” covering what #NELD is, why and how it happens, where it happens, who is most affected, and importantly, how we can respond.

🔗Get it here: lossanddamagecollaboration.org/publication/pa…
2/29. The brief begins with a foreword by @UNFCCC NELs Expert Group Member @IrfanUllahCDO, who highlights that Non-Economic #LossAndDamage has been largely overlooked in climate negotiations and that urgent action is needed to address #NELD happening now e.g. The #PakistanFloods.
3/29. Then @DLodry of @LossDamageYouth shares the powerful story of his lived experience of Non-Economic #LossAndDamage in #Cameroon called "The Tears Of A Village River And Its Population" which tells how climate-intensified #Drought can lead to a loss of #Culture and #Identity.

"One of the ideas we had with #InterPlanetary was, 'What would it take to make science hedonistic? And instead of telling people to do it, you'd have to tell people to STOP doing it?"

- SFI President David Krakauer sets the tone for this weekend's celebrations

David Krakauer: "Do you have a favorite model or metaphor for #time?"

@JamesGleick: "You've already mentioned a river; that's everybody's favorite. Borges said time is a tiger. People talk about it as a thread. We ONLY talk about time in metaphors." Image

Whenever there are floods, a faction of propagandists start propagating that #Dams are the only solution for #FloodsInPakista.
I don't possess expertise in civil engineering, but to some certainty I know dams can't mitigate #floods. Dams can only store naturally flowing waters.
Floodwaters can neither be stored in dams nor stopped. Stopping floodwaters is dangerous and multiplicate the destruction. Even, there are numerous instances when poorly built #dams collapsed due to floodwaters.
#Pakistan has the largest number of #glaciers in the world.
#FloodsInPakistan are due to #GlobalWarming coupled with poorly built infrastructure and urban planning.

[THREAD] Bonjour, ici Juan Pedro Roldan-Blasco, doctorant à l'IGE.

1/ Let's use glaciers to learn something about the relationship between average precipitation and temperature today! ❄️🏔️🌡️

The video below is realized with OGGM-Edu's "World Glacier Explorer" app: edu.oggm.org/en/latest/expl…

#education #glaciers #climate #AcademicChatter
2/ Where are the typical locations where glaciers receive most precipitation?
3/ Mainly:
- in the mid-latitudes storm track: New Zealand, Patagiona, western North-America, Norway...
- in the Monsoon influenced eastern Himalayas

These locations receive a lot of precipitation - Patagonia and north-eastern India are probably the wettest places on Earth!

Earth has lost a 'staggering' 28 trillion tonnes of ice to global warming in the last 23 years, UK scientists find

businessinsider.in/science/news/e… Image
A "staggering" 28 trillion tonnes of ice has disappeared from the surface of the #Earth since 1994, a group of UK scientists has found.
Scientists from #Leeds and #Edinburgh universities and University College London analyzed satellite surveys of glaciers, mountains, and ice sheets between 1994 and 2017 to identify the impact of global warming.

It has been an unusual day today as I have reflected on 13 years of flying the #Boeing747 for #BritishAirways with a few people. I woudl ask for your indulgence as I take a short walk down memory lane from Boeing 747 No 1 to Air Force 1. #BA747 #BritishAirways747. >>>> Image
It all started in 1969 when Joe Sutter an engineer working for #Boeing launched the first #Boeing747 from Boeing Field in #Seattle. The aircraft was the first widebody airliner & over 50 years later it is still be flying. Join me visiting No1 here 👉🏻 Image
This year has seen @BoeingAirplanes announce the end of the line for the #Boeing747 as they will stop manufacturing the freighter version soon. The venerable aircraft hasn’t changed much since 1969 but it will be around for many years to come. Read here 👇🏻 theavgeeks.com/2019/02/09/rep…

Indian scientists have made a key finding which can help to conserve the ice mass of the western #Himalayan #glaciers, that biomass-derived carbon could be the only primary driver of carbon-induced glacier melting in this region.
The research supported by @IndiaDST, Climate Change Program Grant and Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB) showed that the source of organic carbon in the glaciers of Western Himalayas is more from local biomass sources and not from fossil fuel sources.
@serbonline
The glaciers in the Himalaya are melting at an increased rate because of the well-established long-term increase of the near-surface temperature and due to the presence of surface impurities such as dust and organic carbon particles

edu.oggm.org is an #interactive platform to #learn and #teach about #glaciers. We started OGGM-Edu as the "educational branch" of OGGM, but nowadays we see the project as largely independent and useful on its own. Why do we hope that it can be useful to you? 1/n
OGGM-Edu offers "hands-on" and practical activities, but only very little textbook content: we see the platform as an interactive complement to existing (and awesome) resources such as antarcticglaciers.org (@AntarcticGlacie) 2/n Image
Therefore, OGGM-Edu does not attempt to be a "one stop shop" for all things related to glaciers: our target groups are #instructors and independent learners. For example, OGGM-Edu was used by @LizzUltee to teach a week-long workshop in Peru with @CdeCPeru. 3/n Image

#GeorgesIsland is a #drumlin - rocks, gravel, sand and clay deposited by #glaciers as the last ice age ended 12,000 years ago. #NovaScotia has many drumlins including #CitadelHill and #OakIsland.

cbc.ca/news/canada/no…
@AndyFillmoreHFX The word #drumlin comes from the #Gaelic word druim, meaning “rounded hill” or “mound.”

#nspoli @AndyFillmoreHFX #NovaScotia #NS #geology #mining #minerals #Halifax #georgesisland Image
@AndyFillmoreHFX #GeorgesIsland was just a hill. #Halifax Harbour was mostly dry land after the last ice age - lakes and a stream that ran from the #SackvilleRiver to the sea. Georges became an island as rising seas filled the harbour, a process completed 5700 years ago.

Like many islands in #MahoneBay, #NovaScotia, #OakIsland is a #drumlin - rock, sand, gravel and clay deposited by glaciers as the last ice age ended
about 12,000 years ago. Actually, the island is 4 connected drumlins.

Because #OakIsland is #drumlins, it may have layers of #gravel below sea
level which could explain the flood tunnel mystery. Searcher shafts might
just be intersecting sea water naturally flowing underground through porous gravel.
