The Protecting Others Award underscores a movement originally intended for making effective air cleaning accessible & also to provide an opportunity to build in bulk to help others lower their inhalation dose to virus-laden and other aerosols. This award recognizes the latter.💙

2/ Biden’s @EPA, @StateDept & @USACEGALVESTON say that Sea Port Oil Terminal (SPOT), a massive offshore oil export port, pipeline, and tank farm proposed through neighborhoods in Surfside, TX and in the Gulf Coast, would not impact low-income communities and communities of color.
3/ If approved, the SPOT project would emit 300 MILLION tons of greenhouse gasses each year, poisoning the air of Brazoria County where residents already live alongside a number of high-pollution facilities and experience serious challenges to their health and higher cancer rates

But that figure may be higher. A 2014 CA law aimed to overhaul the oil & gas industry’s water-use reporting to keep tabs on excessive use. But as @paldhous' analysis found [code here bit.ly/3QVDJkj], the data is too error-strewn to do what the law intended. 2/7

We worked with @BetterOldSwan (BOS), a community group in Liverpool concerned about the effects of traffic on air quality (AQ) in their neighbourhood. We helped BOS to generate their own AQ data so they could demonstrate their perceived problem of traffic air pollution.

There are LOADS of #CitizenScience projects where AQ scientists work with community groups to measure AQ. However, more 'better' data does not — necessarily — lead to better AQ for affected communities.

Years of racist and classist policies, systems, and practices have oppressed certain groups, making them more vulnerable to crises like climate change. Often these groups include communities of color, Indigenous People, low-income households, or residents with disabilities. 2/10

Trust is seen as key by conservation scientists & practitioners for the cooperation needed to achieve their goals. We explored relations between conservation org-Indigenous Peoples & Local Communities, large-small orgs, & intra-org conservation worker relations (2/9)
Through a focused review, we find trust-building interventions are often conceived to incentivise local cooperation within dominant paradigms. Prevalent framings inc. how to build trust to ensure compliance, remove local opposition, & encourage belief in conservation (3/9)
