Congress must act quickly to reach a #DebtCeiling agreement and avoid a catastrophic default, which would harm the economy and disproportionately hurt low-income households. No #DefaultOnAmerica
The #DebtCeiling deal announced over the weekend shows some progress BUT contains some very damaging provisions that would harm public health and well-being and the environment, especially in frontline communities and communities of color.

➡️docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/…
Congress should reject the egregious provision to move forward the Mountain Valley Pipeline, a project that would expand climate-damaging methane gas, pollute the local environment, and eliminate important legal protections for communities' health. #StopMVP

Our research team @ActionResear just completed the first phase of our water quality mapping project in Lahore. We collected and analyzed water samples from over 400 locations and discovered 6 major E.coli hotspots in the city. A 🧵. #waterquality #Lahore Image
Fecal contamination detected in water samples from Chungi Ammar Sidhu, Charar, Kirianwala, Kharas Mohalla, Mustafaabad, and Kot Khawaja Saeed. #WaterContamination #Pakistan ImageImageImageImage
Our team is moving on to the next phase of research to assess water quality in these areas by collecting a larger number of samples. We've already conducted an extensive study of Chungi Ammar Sidhu and found that 45% of the 72 samples we collected were contaminated with E.coli.

The First Annual #CorsiRosenthalBox Awards continue. Threads embedded in this tweet recognize all of the outstanding recipients of earlier awards. We end w/ the top CR Box Award - The Protecting Others Award (POA) (I know - the name of the award keeps changing).
The Protecting Others Award underscores a movement originally intended for making effective air cleaning accessible & also to provide an opportunity to build in bulk to help others lower their inhalation dose to virus-laden and other aerosols. This award recognizes the latter.💙
There were so many GREAT entries for the POA. So, we will highlight the g💙💙dness of many before announcing our top three awards. I note again that these awards are only for those who submitted replies to the original call as there are others out there doing great work!

1/ Is @POTUS breaking his promise to honor environmental justice and is instead positioning the U.S. as one of the world’s largest fossil fuel dealers? 🤔

2/ Biden’s @EPA, @StateDept & @USACEGALVESTON say that Sea Port Oil Terminal (SPOT), a massive offshore oil export port, pipeline, and tank farm proposed through neighborhoods in Surfside, TX and in the Gulf Coast, would not impact low-income communities and communities of color. Image
3/ If approved, the SPOT project would emit 300 MILLION tons of greenhouse gasses each year, poisoning the air of Brazoria County where residents already live alongside a number of high-pollution facilities and experience serious challenges to their health and higher cancer rates Image

An @insideclimate analysis of data collected by CA oil & gas regulators shows 100s of millions of gallons of freshwater that could supply cities and farms is being used to extract #FossilFuels—which exacerbate #drought. New from @paldhous and me. 1/7 insideclimatenews.org/news/18092022/…
But that figure may be higher. A 2014 CA law aimed to overhaul the oil & gas industry’s water-use reporting to keep tabs on excessive use. But as @paldhous' analysis found [code here bit.ly/3QVDJkj], the data is too error-strewn to do what the law intended. 2/7
Problems revealed by ICN reinforce earlier complaints about CA regulators’ data. A @CCSTorg report gave “pages upon pages” of recommendations to better serve the intent of the law, said lead author @DrLFeinsten. “I don’t think they’ve done a single one.” 3/7

We examine tensions in knowledge production from an air quality citizen science project & make suggestions for how to do it in an environmentally just way.

🧵1/
We worked with @BetterOldSwan (BOS), a community group in Liverpool concerned about the effects of traffic on air quality (AQ) in their neighbourhood. We helped BOS to generate their own AQ data so they could demonstrate their perceived problem of traffic air pollution.

There are LOADS of #CitizenScience projects where AQ scientists work with community groups to measure AQ. However, more 'better' data does not — necessarily — lead to better AQ for affected communities.

As we face yet another #heatwave in MA, let’s talk about this NEW #ClimateLaw that @MassGovernor Baker just signed. This is a major step to help protect our communities from the devastating impacts of #ClimateChange. Here’s why: 1/13
clf.org/newsroom/mass-…
Why do we need more climate laws & policies on top of our Global Warming Solutions Act and Next Generation Roadmap law? While these two laws set mandatory goals to slash climate damaging pollution, we need other laws and policies to dictate HOW to accomplish these goals. 2/13
The new law sets a target of installing enough #OffshoreWind to power 2.5 million homes by 2027 and various other policies to make #CleanEnergy easier to supply to MA residents. 3/13

Last week, Massachusetts released its final Clean Energy and Climate Plan (CECP). @cpealesloan and I are diving in to explore components of the plan. Let’s look at climate justice and a just transition: A short thread. 1/10
Years of racist and classist policies, systems, and practices have oppressed certain groups, making them more vulnerable to crises like climate change. Often these groups include communities of color, Indigenous People, low-income households, or residents with disabilities. 2/10
As we chart the path towards our clean energy future, we have to account for and undo this subjugation. That is the essence of climate justice, which needs to drive our transition off of fossil fuels. 3/10

We are in utmost frustration, disgust and disbelief that the State of Massachusetts has contributed to further environmental racism and classism for the already disproportionately burdened environmental justice community of Chelsea.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation, with the approval of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, has yet again dumped hazardous waste in an EJ community despite the new and historic environmental justice legislation passed last year.

Diablo Canyon should not have been built in the first place. Closing the plant’s reactors is the right thing to do for #climate, California’s safety, global security, and #environmentaljustice.

@Sammy_Roth @GavinNewsom @JenGranholm @ENERGY

Why would #California, @GavinNewsom, @PGE4Me, and the feds use billions of taxpayer dollars to rush through a relicensing of Diablo for only a few years of operation, when they still have 3 years to prepare for the closure?

Are they going to overturn the whole coastal conservation regulation on thermal power plants just for Diablo Canyon to squeeze in a few more years of operation?

Through a focused review, we find trust-building interventions are often conceived to incentivise local cooperation within dominant paradigms. Prevalent framings inc. how to build trust to ensure compliance, remove local opposition, & encourage belief in conservation (3/9)

Current research on microplastics is the stuff of nightmares-

Thread 1/x

Much of the research is trapped behind paywalls, and only reported on in a limited, fragmented pattern

The growing risks of microplastics are a direct function of an ongoing push by the same sociopathic corporations that are driving the climate crisis

1/15 So-called “chemical recycling” or “advanced recycling” are not the safe, green, or “circular" technologies often described by the petrochemical industry. Let’s take a deeper dive and look at a few examples in today’s #FacilityFriday🧵. @CLF
2/15 All so-called “chemical” or “advanced” recycling technologies burn plastic or other waste – or turn it into fuel to be burned elsewhere. Any supposed “raw materials” that come out of the process are purely incidental. #FacilityFriday @GAIAnoburn
no-burn.org/resources/all-…
3/15 Burning plastic ≠ recycling. So-called “chemical recycling” uses a two-step incineration process. Step 1: expose plastics to temps as high as 2,800° F to create fuel and waste byproducts. Step 2: burn the dirty fuel and the waste. #FacilityFriday clf.org/blog/burning-w…
