1/ Journalists are under incredible pressure since the #Beirut_Explosion - we are trying our best to be as calm as possible, as contained as possible in the middle of a crisis that is eating us inside out, not to mention the economic crisis & #Covid19 & our fear for our families.
2/ This is to talk about local Lebanese Journos specifically because reporting from home about home makes it very hard to isolate yourself or even reason with yourself mentally. That being said, the last thing we need is people harassing us in the street. #Lebanon
3/ Few days ago I was working on a story for @cnni - when I proceeded to interview a local resident of the Mar Mekhayel area #Beirut, she verbally attacked me and called me out saying that 'This channel spreads lies' - I was trying to cover her side of the story. #Lebanon

The good news is the 2,750 tons of Ammonium Nitrate did not all explode. Tens of tons did not ignite.

The bad news and low level of competence is the fact that there were 10 tons of Fireworks low explosive pyrotechnic devices in the same warehouse 12+
The head of the customs Badri Daher and the director of the #Beirut harbour Hassan Qraytem were arrested (among others). One more big head to be held accountable.

The two responsible belong to powerful Lebanese political parties.
This indicates the level of incompetence at the #Beirut Harbour. Storing Ammonium Nitrate with low explosive pyrotechnic devices in one warehouse is a criminal act.

"Added to the food crisis and fallout from the explosion is the increasing bite of U.S. sanctions, mostly targeted at Syria, but also hitting its Lebanese neighbor."

I leave the hospital now after more than 52 hours of nonstop work, minimal sleep, minimal food and a rage of emotions. The event was tragic. There are no words that truly describe the horrific scene, but what we were going through can't be left untold.

It only took 10 minutes of watchful silence after the blast before the doors of hell opened. The emergency department was dark, ceiling down in many corners and all we were surrounded with were screams, blood and open wounds.

Being the only string of sanity in a collapsing world is not easy. All the burden starts from the first moment you decide to detach yourself from your own urge to panic and collect your focus to respond to a mass of helplessness that is fiercely trying to grasp on to you.

Thread on the political attempts to dodge accountability for the #Beirut_Explosion.

The institutional corruption, and lack of any accountability, and its implication on governance/negligence, are at the heart of this tragedy.
Officials have already started exchanging blame through their advisors and appointees, showing evidence of warnings, and many here expect/fear: this catastrophe will be pinned on a low key employee(s), thus absolving the entire political class from any responsibility.
Since the 2750 tons of Amonium Nitrate were stored since 2014 in the Beirut Port, the responsibility is shared by two presidents, two parliaments & their eternal speaker, three Prime Ministers, four governments, along with officials in the Judiciary, Customs and security services

Interessant.

In Beirut just now: It felt like it was an earthquake for a few seconds then something big exploded. Not sure what it is yet.
Beirut a little earlier today, explosion so massive it was felt and caused significant damage outside the city.
A theory is floating around that the explosion at the Port of Beirut was caused by fireworks.

Whatever it is, whether a bombing or an attack or an error, it's now high time to unleash all of our rage & power against this criminal ruling class that thinks our lives are worthless.
