Interested in the effect of #psychedelics on the brain? Did you know you can image the cortex and extract valuable physiological information at the same time in an ecologically valid setup? We used @kernelco Flow1 to do exactly that! A #tweeprint: 
Flow1 is a Time Domain (TD) fNIRS device, which measures cortical brain activity (oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin concentrations) and physiology such as pulse rate (PR) and pulse rate variability (PRV).
In our study, 15 participants underwent subanesthetic #ketamine and saline injections. First, we found that ketamine administration caused significant changes in systemic physiology: increase in PR and decrease in PRV.

I have a wild ambulance IV #ketamine story that I feel like I have to share. I told it to my students in a class on the plasticity of #consciousness and they insisted it needs to be public knowledge. So, somewhat apprehensibly, here it is. Strap in 📜:

First it’s a little pinch in my lower back. Ouch… but whatever, I have deadlines. Moments later I cough again. This time my upper body spasms forward. Now I know I’m in dangerous territory. I recognise the nerve pain. I have two bulging discs - old kickboxing injuries.
Why this new #ketamine law in Colorado is a disaster that will cost more lives than it is intended to save, a thread:
Severe agitation is a medical emergency requiring prompt recognition and management. It causes patients to harm themselves, raises heart rate and blood pressure to dangerously high levels, and can raise temperature to levels equivalent to heat stroke.
Of the therapeutic options that exist, ketamine has the widest safe dosing range. Doses up to 13 mg/kg are safely used in children. It works faster than anything else to reduce the agitation and allow evaluation and mgmt. It is the least likely to cause the pt to stop breathing.

500mg IM is OVER the dose I would use for a GENERAL ANESTHETIC! Hell, for sedation you would barely use 1/3rd of that dose.
