3. If you look at actual court cases, sometimes judges sentence someone to punish them; other times, they sentence someone "for their own good," because they "can't take care of themselves"...

#OTD in 1852 Frederick Douglass recited "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" before the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society at Corinthian Hall. Douglass attacked slavery by highlighting how white Americans could celebrate freedom while enslaving others.
Douglass referenced the Bible, Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution to argue that as long as slavery existed that Independence Day would be a day of mourning for African Americans, especially the enslaved.
He proclaimed "...justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.”

Fifty years ago today, hundreds of people incarcerated at the Attica Correctional Facility in New York took control of the prison, issuing a set of demands for freedom, wages, education access, medical care, and more.
After 4 days, the National Guard retook the prison by force, leading to the deaths of at least 43 people. With such a tragic outcome, Attica became a national symbol both of prisoners’ organizing for liberation and the repression of law enforcement, prison guards, and the state.
In their declaration, the incarcerated people of Attica made demands that bear a chilling resemblance to what we are still calling for today. Carceral spaces have never been safe, and the impact the system makes on poor communities and Black and Brown people is immeasurable.
No one asked for this, but I've been thinking a lot about #abolition and #abolishthepolice for some time now. And if I may, I'd like to share my novice perspective, albeit one rooted in my own (anti-)philosophical stance. So here goes.
I'm not convinced that the #abolitionist movement--which I wholly agree with--is an oppositional movement. Philosophically, a call for abolition is not a call to opposition. This distinction, in my mind anyway, is crucial. I'll elaborate.
Hegel told us long ago that oppositional realities (or what he calls dialectics) form a totality in themselves. Think about a fight: if one person chooses not to fight, there is no fight at all--only violence on the part of the aggressor.

Also included in the demands are the creation of an Critical Race Studies Department, increased funding for the @CSRPC, and democratic control of all Diversity and Inclusion activities on campus. In short, faculty are demanding #MoreThanDiversity.
Please read the full letter and sign on if you can. This has got to be one of the most forward thinking, transformative faculty actions that I have heard of across the nation.
1) I have seen several people that I have great respect for say that racism underlies a newly circulating poll that shows support for BLM but substantially fewer people supporting the demand to “defund the police”. Of course, it’s the US and racism underlies most things
2) but I think in this case, there is more going on. The first is that this is a new demand among most people. Two months ago no one, other than organizers, had heard of “defund the police”, so it’s a new idea.
3) and like most new ideas, people need to think about it and understand it’s meaning before fully agreeing with it. Most of the media discussion concerning #defund has been reactive and in response to the right’s mischaracterization of it.

We wrote this before widespread calls to #DefundMPD and mainstream engagement w/ concepts of #abolition, but what I think this writing does is set the groundwork for why divestment from the state (including social services and any anti-violence programs that engage with police) +
divestment from the state is a mandate for survivor safety. policing is NOT an inevitability. state violence is not a necessary by-product of keeping survivors safe. we will never end sexual assault if we don't end the carceral state.
