The UK Government has shelved the #RightsRemovalBill and we hope it does not return. The Bill seeks to alter the #HumanRightsAct in such a way that ordinary people would lose the power to challenge discrimination perpetrated by the state. humanists.uk/2022/09/07/gov…
The #HumanRightsAct gives everyone the power to take legal action against the police (demonstrated by the victims of the rapist John Worboys). The #RightsRemovalBill diminishes this power, & with it, the ability to effectively hold the police to account. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
The HRA also allows for 'religion' to be interpreted as 'religion or belief.' The non-religious (52% of UK population) can & do challenge discrimination on this basis. The #RightsRemovalBill strips this power of interpretation away, and with it our rights. bihr.org.uk/blog/why-our-h…

Justice secretary Dominic Raab said: 'It is important that the police (and public authorities generally) are able to exercise their professional judgment in operational decision-making and the allocation of resources.'
'Licensing or promoting litigation against the police and other public services is not an effective means of ensuring accountability, but instead skews public attention, priorities and resources – decisions which should be taken by elected governments and MPs, not the courts.'

The #RightsRemovalBill gets its 2nd reading on Monday the 12th of September.
This reduces our rights & allows the government to over rule the courts.
Please write to your MP to vote against it.

REMEMBER THIS 👇 in upcoming debates, if YOUR representative says words to the effect of: "Oh no, we're not trying to destroy #HumanRights. We agree Human Rights are important - honest, guv! - we just don't like the UK #HumanRightsAct and/or the #EuropeanConvention (#ECHR)"...
Such claims are DEMONSTRABLY BULLSHIT if they come from the mouth of *anyone* who supports the position @CPhilpOfficial has espoused, which the @Telegraph has splashed on its front page...
To be clear, #Article4 of #UDHR 👇 (also #ECHR and #HRA) is explicit and unambiguous:

"NO ONE shall be held in #slavery or #servitude; slavery and the #slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms."

Not "British citizens"; not "lawful residents", or "people we like"... Article 1 All human beings are born free & equal in dignity

The proposed Human Rights Act reforms must be withdrawn. The Government must not make any changes to the Human Rights Act, especially ones that dilute people's human rights in any circumstances, make the Government less accountable, or reduce people's ability to make HR claims.
The Human Rights Act as it exists currently protects all of us. We lose it at our peril. It is an essential law that allows us to challenge public authorities when they get it wrong and has helped secure justice on issues from the right to life to the right to free speech.

They used the legislation 78 times in 2 years to take our #humanrights away.

🧵: Some tips for building support for #humanrights based on five years of messaging workshops with activists around the world:
1/ Use values - always make an emotional, moral case for HR, not just legal/political/rational (RoL, accountability etc). "We are all human" "We treat each other the way we want to be treated"
2/ Empower - talk about HR as something we do, not just something inherent or given/taken by govt, leaving us passive.

The Government's plan to scrap the #HumanRightsAct and replace it with the #RightsRemovalBill is an unthinkable attack on each one of our rights to be treated fairly & with dignity and respect. 🧵
On #WindrushDay, it is an attack on Vernon Vanriel and Eunice Tumi. Vernon travelled to Jamaica and was denied re-entry into the UK, facing destitution as a result. Arguing that their human rights were breached, they were subsequently granted citizenship.
theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/d…
It is an attack on people like Mr. and Mrs. Driscoll, whose council allocated Mr. Driscoll a spot in a care home, but not Mrs. Driscoll. They made arguments on the basis of their right to family life, and were eventually placed together in the same home.

As the Bill of Rights is due to be published, a piece I wrote when the latest #HRA review was announced.

“The championing of parliamentary control sits uncomfortably alongside this government’s consistent attempts to bypass scrutiny and accountability…” prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/a-hum…
A reminder that the govt effectively ignored the IHRAR, the previously commissioned independent review of the #HumanRightsAct, which made clear there was no proper basis for the narrative that judges are out of control, nor that groundless human rights claims are proliferating.
Govt didn’t much like those conclusions & commissioned a new consultation for a Bill of Rights last December.

Some 12,483 individual responses were received in response to the consultation which ended on 7 March. They have not been published by the MoJ. h/t @BIHRhumanrights.

1/8 The UK government plans to replace the #HumanRightsAct with a #BillofRights. The UK government wants to bypass full legislative scrutiny by Parliament. This is bad news.

@HRW today joined 150 organizations today asking the Justice Secretary to think again.

2/8 Our friends @libertyhq have shepherded more than 150 groups and individuals who lead on human rights in the UK, to say clearly -- in one voice -- to the government that a change that is so fundamental should not be rushed through without full scrutiny. libertyhumanrights.org.uk/issue/what-are…
3/8 The full letter text is here: libertyhumanrights.org.uk/wp-content/upl…

The closing line puts it very clearly: "We urge the Government to respect the principles of our parliamentary democracy and subject the
proposed Bill of Rights to the pre-legislative scrutiny it clearly requires."

The #ECHR protects everyone's rights.

It's not to do with the #EU, but it is essential to the #GoodFridayAgreement and part of the UK's constitution with the #HumanRightsAct.
The #HumanRightsAct is part of the UK Constitution, and brings protection to the most basic rights into UK law.
The brilliant @alicedonald (author of this explainer) pointed out a very important correction - there are only 46 members of the Council of Europe.

Russia was expelled (the first state to have been subject to this sanction) in 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine.

The Govt have gone to the @coe and rightly pleaded with them to expel Russia, for gross human rights violations in Ukraine.
Yet the Govt has now also formally announced its plans to substitute the HRA with a UK Bill of Rights (and undermine the operation of the ECHR in the UK).
@coe 3. Contradictions and sheer hypocrisy from the Govt, Baroness @SarahLudford: "HMG will ensure the Constitution is defended". Defended against whom? The Judiciary, deploying human rights, to protect it?

A short thread 🧵 about Samuel & Jacob's case, and the use of #restraint against children with autism, learning disabilities or #SEND.

1. We brought a civil & #HumanRightsAct case against Kent County Council for the use of mechanical restraint chairs against Samuel & Jacob while they were at a specialist primary school for autistic children, Five Acre Woods School.
2. Sam & Jacob were active, sensory seeking children who loved climbing, running around & being outside. They were non-verbal & struggled to communicate. Here they are out walking with their dad, Mark, at the time they attended the school (all photos used with permission).

Of course, it also follows the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a growing appreciation of how SLAPPs block efforts to expose kleptocracy. It follows the #MeToo movement and the systematic efforts to silence victims through the courts. It follows Jimmy Saville, Harvey Weinstein...
