The proposed Human Rights Act reforms must be withdrawn. The Government must not make any changes to the Human Rights Act, especially ones that dilute people's human rights in any circumstances, make the Government less accountable, or reduce people's ability to make HR claims.
The Human Rights Act as it exists currently protects all of us. We lose it at our peril. It is an essential law that allows us to challenge public authorities when they get it wrong and has helped secure justice on issues from the right to life to the right to free speech.

1/ Use values - always make an emotional, moral case for HR, not just legal/political/rational (RoL, accountability etc). "We are all human" "We treat each other the way we want to be treated"
2/ Empower - talk about HR as something we do, not just something inherent or given/taken by govt, leaving us passive.

The Government's plan to scrap the #HumanRightsAct and replace it with the #RightsRemovalBill is an unthinkable attack on each one of our rights to be treated fairly & with dignity and respect. 🧵
On #WindrushDay, it is an attack on Vernon Vanriel and Eunice Tumi. Vernon travelled to Jamaica and was denied re-entry into the UK, facing destitution as a result. Arguing that their human rights were breached, they were subsequently granted citizenship.

A reminder that the govt effectively ignored the IHRAR, the previously commissioned independent review of the #HumanRightsAct, which made clear there was no proper basis for the narrative that judges are out of control, nor that groundless human rights claims are proliferating.
Govt didn’t much like those conclusions & commissioned a new consultation for a Bill of Rights last December.
Some 12,483 individual responses were received in response to the consultation which ended on 7 March. They have not been published by the MoJ. h/t @BIHRhumanrights.

1. We brought a civil & #HumanRightsAct case against Kent County Council for the use of mechanical restraint chairs against Samuel & Jacob while they were at a specialist primary school for autistic children, Five Acre Woods School.
2. Sam & Jacob were active, sensory seeking children who loved climbing, running around & being outside. They were non-verbal & struggled to communicate. Here they are out walking with their dad, Mark, at the time they attended the school (all photos used with permission).

So firstly, a minute to reflect on the sheer bloody marvellousness of this. Coming so soon after consultations on the #HumanRightsAct and Official Secrets Act it's easy to feel cynical + sceptical about the govt's intentions. But this is misplaced here

This follows years of campaigning and the powerful advocacy of SLAPP victims such as @CatherineBelton and @tomburgis. It follows MPs seeing first-hand how SLAPPs can target ANYONE who works to hold power to account - even, in the case of @CharlotteLeslie, their fellow MPs.
