The pioneering contribution of the late Sam King honoured today. A Windrush passenger, he co-founded the Windrush Foundation & campaigned for #WindrushDay from marking the 40th anniversary in 1988.

On #WindrushDay, it is an attack on Vernon Vanriel and Eunice Tumi. Vernon travelled to Jamaica and was denied re-entry into the UK, facing destitution as a result. Arguing that their human rights were breached, they were subsequently granted citizenship.

1. For #WindrushDay I'm going to share the story of Zaffar Mirza, a 56 year old Pakistani man who was lawfully living with his family in Edinburgh until one day he lost his passport and became a victim of the #HostileEnvironment, two years before the #Windrush scandal broke.
2. In 1967, aged 8, Mr Mirza moved from Pakistan to London with his family. He had a difficult youth, and spent some time in local authority care and juvenile detention before moving to Scotland aged 17. There, he met and married a British woman, Mrs Begum, one year later.
3. Together they raised a family. All of their children were British. He chose not to apply for British citizenship himself, always viewing his status in the UK as secure. After all, his Pakistani passport contained a 1970s stamp which clearly stated he had indefinite leave.
On #WindrushDay, we call on the @ukhomeoffice to immediately suspend #HostileEnvironment policies that prevent migrants in vulnerable circumstances from accessing public services - and to implement the recommendations of the Windrush Lessons Learned Review. 1/4

My friend @pvernon has done a tremendous amount over the years to establish Windrush Day. We worked with him to coordinate the 2013 call from a civic & faith coalition, inc Windrush passengers, for government to recognise Windrush Day as an annual event.

We talk of Windrush as the beginning of post-war immigration. That 1948 headline captures why it is better understood as also a new chapter in the longer history of Empire & Commonwealth, service & contribution which made Britain the country we are today
