Hello #soctwitter & etc, if you're planning a first-day-of-class (or etc) introductions, and you want to be inclusive of trans/non-binary folks, can I suggest (as a trans professor with a lot of trans & non-binary students) including pronouns as *optional* rather than required?

Pronouns in go-rounds & on name-tags & etc are great in many ways, bc they signal "we don't assume anyone's gender identity/pronouns here" and also "we're trying to be inclusive of trans & non-binary people."
BUT they're also deeply uncomfortable for anyone not ready to share.

I would have hated hated hated them when I was a not-yet-out-as-trans college student, and when I've made pronoun-sharing optional & explained why, I've gotten a lot of appreciation from my trans & NB students.

Enjoying this biography of Bellah by Matteo Bortolini of the U of Padua. It's very well written for a sociologist, much less one who I assume is not a native English speaker. It is a full biography not just an intellectual biography.
TIL: Bellah's father abandoned his family and committed suicide, leading him to be renamed Robert Neeley. He was a competitive individualist in HS. And he served a year in the Army after he arrived at Harvard.

#soctwitter, I am reviewing an interesting paper using qual interviews. The authors often count statements etc (eg half stated x) to indicate salience. Yet the sample is not a random one. How am I to think about this (as an absolute non-expert on qual)?
Perhaps @JessicaCalarco @MarioLuisSmall would be able to give me some clues. Just saw that a book on qual literacy is forthcoming - I would be the first to buy that!

As some know, I teach a publishing course for grad students focused on articles. Here is some common feedback that I give on student drafts #SocTwitter: (1) The "lit review" needs an argument. The section should not be about "here's how widely read I am in topic X," but about 1/
"here's my argument about the prior literature that THIS paper addresses." This doesn't have to be a gap, but can be. (2) The front of the paper doesn't match the back end. That is, the paper sets up expectations for answers to questions that the data cannot answer. This often 2/

Damaske’s book shows how the experience of unemployment, including the job loss, its consequences, the search for new work, and subsequent employment, are shaped by gender & class. As a consequence, gender & class inequalities are exacerbated by the unemployment process. 2/7
Women feel guilt for their job losses and make it up by sacrificing their health and wellbeing for their families and taking on extra household labor while men (particularly middle-class men) feel empowered to take time for themselves. 3/7

1/ Why is "framing" and lit review so contentious in sociology? A thread for #soctwitter and assorted bystanders.
2/ Last week, our department had a very nice panel where faculty answered questions publishing. Panel included current/former editors/deputy editors of ASR, AJS, Contexts, Soc of Ed, SPQ and more. (Yes, our dept is super professional and service oriented).
3/ Most advice was simple and intuitive: keep revising, show your work, read the journal you submit to, take rejection in stride, accept the randomness of reviews, etc. BUT the discussion of framing and lit review was long and complex.

Taking advanced math in HS influences academic success, what careers we pursue, and how much $ we make. Studies find racial gaps in who takes Calculus in HS & Algebra I in MS, but there is little research on race and adv math course taking during the transition to HS. 2/

2/12 #COVID19 fatalities are hitting older age groups hard. Case fatality rates for 80-90 currently 17.5% in Italy. While these numbers will hopefully be overestimates, the burden on older ages groups is frighteningly high.
3/12 With current concentration of deaths at older ages, COVID-19 deaths will hit older countries hard (Italy has 23% of population >65). Figure 1 compares Italy to South Korea (top) and Nigeria to Brazil (bottom) – two countries similar in size but different age distributions.
I need help: A friend is meeting with some teachers to discuss racial inequalities in middle and high school. They would like to have some studies ready to show the teachers the inequalities minority kids, esp. black boys, face in schools.
I'll be doing a search on my own, but would love the insight of experts who could point to 2-3 studies that make this point really well. Or to strategies that help teachers do better for minority students in these situations.

Before I even click on the PDF containing reviewer comments, I tell myself a little mantra that is huge in jiu jitsu: “You either win or your learn. There is no losing.” It sounds hokey, but this mantra has helped me appreciate very critical reviews #SocTwitter #AcademicTwitter
Then, while reading reviewer comments, I look for the “fatal flaws” that got my work canned. Usually the issue is about theory choice, methods, or a mismatch between theory / data. I don’t get mired in little stuff...yet... #SocTwitter #AcademicTwitter #phdchat 3
