Ireland and the climate crisis - one story illuminating why we are where we are. Thread

Ireland’s biggest fossil fuel company is @dccplc .

They are a FTSE100 company. Last year they made £13.4 billion in revenue and £530.2 million in profit. 71% of the profit came from their fossil fuel businesses.
We all know that we need to stop using fossil fuels. But even with the ocean on fire, DCC have not committed to stop selling oil and gas.

My last #hackathon & #socialenterprise pitch was to improve minority participation in #clinicaltrials. This trial is has 74% black participants compared to usual 2.5%. Why?

Yes, we do need to expand access. Colon cancer kills.

#MedTwitter #BlackTwitter #NurseTwitter thoughts?
In trials for new therapies however, you see this:

“Even though heart conditions disproportionately affect Black individuals, they accounted for only 2.5% of clinical trial participants in a global trials report by the Food and Drug Administration.”

So black participants are the majority in WHICH studies?

Having been in executive suite, speaking on #access broadly, I saw non-clinicians use “access” to shame clinicians on self care or pointing out workplace issues. Yet same administrators would cut number of staff for budget

Those of us who affirmed our own agency and power by learning from and with our moms. My mom’s stories are her own but she and I together have unpacked many cultural myths to learn better self compassion, willingness to identify racism, less perfectionism.
💪🏽💪🏻💪🏿 @DrvanTilburg
This is a type of trauma many WOC/POC experience. My mom’s hair is extremely thick, textured. I recall her being very fixated on making sure her own hair & our hair was always incredibly neat.

More recently I’ve come to understand this matches an experience of having black hair.
The so-called “model minority “is taught to align with white culture, to suppress oneself in order to layer under & serve white supremacy.

I have worked to remove internalized racism, colorism, self hate & learned from #blackexcellence on:

My ongoing career dilemma is as follows:

Many people tell me to be less perfectionist or aim lower.

However, a plethora of data reveal there are different standards for different people for gatekeeping/recognition of merit.

I don’t feel comfortable fudging. Others do, tho.
First, I wonder if everybody is given this advice that they should aim lower & have lower standards?

Seeking to do something different than the status quo or “realistic” is generally considered #leadership and #innovation.

Why not push boundaries?

For many populations

our pushing the boundaries is the only way they get out of “the margins” or are no longer outside the walls

physical walls
policy walls
payment walls
definitions
access
etc

Those of us w/ identities not mainstream or of marginalized populations see it
