After a long wait, I'd like to finally do a tweetorial about our latest paper on menopause status, amyloid and tau! #ENDALZ #ADSexGenPIA onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…
Accumulating evidence shows a sex-specific vulnerability to tau deposition. This has been found at autopsy and also in vivo with CSF and PET studies
What still isn't entirely clear is what might be driving these differences. There are some interesting findings coming out about a cardiovascular effect (academic.oup.com/braincomms/art…) from @super_brains team:

💥 Two pre-prints just dropped that clarify the origin & emergence of SARS-CoV-2. The first makes the case that lineages A & B represent independent spillovers from animals.. work by @jepekar @MichaelWorobey @K_G_Andersen @edwardcholmes & more 🧵 zenodo.org/record/6291628
The second one further substantiates that the Huanan “seafood market” in central Wuhan was where these spillover events occurred. It’s by @MichaelWorobey @stgoldst @angie_rasmussen @arambaut @K_G_Andersen @robertson_lab @acritschristoph @MarionKoopmans zenodo.org/record/6299116
Adding to the case that the Huanan Seafood Market was initial site of spillover, another preprint just dropped— this one led by George Gao of the China CDC. Their work independently reached the same conclusion. researchsquare.com/article/rs-137…

#SciTwitter After a lot of research and asking around, I'm making the lab equipment recommendations 🧵 I wish I'd had 2 months ago. RT/share with a #newPI or startup 🔬⚗️🛒
Note, much of the equipment hasn't arrived yet, will add comments after actual use.
-80 #freezer
Two clear winners: PHC (@panasonic) and Stirling Ultracold. Both low energy, quiet, reliable. We went with PHC because I know those to last many years, and slightly cheaper.
Thanks @MarcoJost_ @letUbeU @aryelipman #MBCBiolabs
-20 #freezer
Less clear, many viable options. We ended up getting a split of PHC MDF -30 (recommended as quieter) and much cheaper Corepoint Scientific/@VWR, will see which we prefer. Thermo hasn't failed #MBCbiolabs, but $$$ and several people said poor customer support.

Our review on Spatial Goal Coding in the Hippocampal Formation is now out in @NeuroCellPress!:

sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

🔼Open access link (for 50 days!)
🔽Some teasers from the review

1/
We attempted the ambitious task of summarizing, categorizing & making (some) sense out of the literature - from 1931 to 2021 - on *if* and *how* the hippocampal formation encode spatial goals.

2/
1. Navigation strategies

Different brain regions preferentially support different types of navigation - so goals are likely not represented similarly when using different navigation strategies!

Also, did you know about the "sequential egocentric strategy"?

As a scientist on Twitter, you want to get your research known (right?).
The best way to do this is write cool threads about your papers/preprints!🧵

-- Here's some (personal) advice on how to make #SciTwitter threads --

Comments & further tips welcome! 🙏
1/
Why do a thread on your paper/preprint (aka #Tweeprint)?
- Spread the knowledge
- Get feedback
- Something to pin to your profile
- Increase your chances of being cited, invited, known by your peers
- Add your personal twist & info that is not in the paper

2/
Preparation
- Use a text editor for drafting. Threads might not be saveable as drafts in twitter
- Choose ONE main message
- Draft 1 sub-message per slide, supported by up to 4 figures, or 1 gif or video.

- Use spaces to increase readability

- add
↙️a tweet counter

Mice display empathy using the same brain structures as humans: Check out our paper in @ScienceMagazine about how distinct neuronal circuits are involved in empathy for companion mice who are experiencing pain or pain relief vs fear science.sciencemag.org/content/371/65… Explainer THREAD 1/10
Rapid Social Transfer of Pain: Following only a 1h social interaction with a mouse experiencing pain, “bystander” mice acquire an aversive pain state. We believe this model demonstrates key components of empathy. #Neuroscience #SciTwitter #research #didyouknow 2/10
Rapid Social Transfer of Analgesia: We also found that after a 1h social interaction w/a mouse experiencing pain+morphine analgesia, “bystander” mice acquire pain relief in the absence of drug administration! Pain relief can be socially transmitted to a social partner! 3/10

Taking the opportunity to reflect on the personal backstory & progression of @helenvuongphd + lab’s discovery of a role for the maternal microbiota in regulating axon development in the fetal brain. nature.com/articles/s4158…
rdcu.be/b7B5O

My first 🧵:
When I joined the Patterson lab @Caltech as a grad student, Liming Wang & Natalia Malkova had just established a mouse model to study epidemiological links between maternal infection and increased risk for schizophrenia & autism (very fringe at the time!)
jneurosci.org/content/23/1/2…
Steve Smith found that IL-6 mediated the adverse effects of maternal inflammation on fetal brain development & offspring behavior, but we didn't know how. My job was to find out where and how it was working- in mom, placenta and/or fetal brain.

I've seen this floating around a lot on Twitter and it's frustrating to see science misappropriated like this. It's additionally damaging as many well-meaning folks might see it, think it's credible, and then choose not to wear masks. Well, let's look at the science (1/?). Image
Before I start, I'm not a doctor and this isn't medical advice. If you have a medical emergency, PLEASE GO SEE A DOCTOR. If any doctors or scientists would like to chime in, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I might be wrong and I'm always trying to learn (2/?)
Starting with the first study: (PMID 18500410).
1) The *lowest* recorded pulse oximeter reading was ~96% SpO2, which is in the normal range (95%+) (3/?)

What are the most pressing scientific issues and debates around the mathematical modeling of #Coronavirus/#COVID19, and are we actually solving them? (thread) 0/n

I am strongly in favor of distancing measures and -- in the absence of absolutely flawless test/tracing -- lockdowns, It's the only real tool available. I also strongly oppose *herd immunity* as a "strategy", and think we are likely not close nor should count on it. (thread) 1/n

#SciTwitter Does anyone know how often #receptors or #ligands are the limiting factor for in vivo signaling pathways? Versus equilibrium where modulating either side even a little affects activity.
@keiser_lab @kevansf @srikosuri
For posterity: As far as I can tell so far, when receptors are expressed constitutively at decent levels, ligands are usually limiting. Receptors that are conditionally expressed are usually limiting. Haven't figured out how hard 'limiting' applies in either case.
This is from conversations rather than primary research, so #CaveatEmptor.

So important to support grad students now. Many are wondering whether their rotations will be extended & when they are expected to match with labs. PIs should be in touch with their students & students should realize this is a real world test of lab life under stress conditions/1
As I said in yesterday's fac mtg, if a student rotated in 2 equally exciting labs, 1 which requires lab visits to mate crocodiles & 1 which can function with ppl @ home, their current experience is telling them which lab to join in 2020 /3
While we should accommodate students who need more time, we should also realize that some labs are extraordinarily productive now & that work brings the satisfaction that students are seeking by deciding to pursue PhD /4
