New @RoamResearch users:

Many #Roamans see incredible potential for their Roam workflows, but don’t know how to make it happen.

I can help—in a couple of different ways!

1. My free YouTube playlist, The Roaman Way, guides you through Roam’s fundamental features:
2. My paid course Your Road to Roam provides sample workflows as models you can adapt to your own needs—

Including workflows that use @dvargas92495’s (and @TfTHacker’s) SmartBlocks extension!

The course is being updated to V2 right now. Get it at a discount—link in quote tweet!

I've been building and refining my personal productivity/#GTD system in @RoamResearch for 19 months now, and teaching others how to do it for 14.

I've become convinced that Tools for Thought (TfT) and GTD are a match made in heaven, and I'm here to spread the good news!
Preface: I am 100% all in with @RoamResearch. No other tool I've ever used—and I've used many—has tapped into and expanded the way my brain works.

Roam has.

But other brains align with other TfTs, and I can help THEM be more productive, too

What are the advantages of setting up your productivity system in a Tool for Thought?

(By TfTs, I mean tools like @RoamResearch, @amplenote, @logseq, @obsdmd, @rem_note, etc.—knowledge management on the surface, but their connection-making power makes LOTS possible)

Here’s something I hear from new #Roamans on a regular basis:

"I'd love to use @RoamResearch for managing tasks and projects, but I'm afraid I'll lose track of them."

or

"I'm worried I'll set things up the wrong way and it won't work."

or… 👇

“I’ve used every #productivity app out there. They all start out amazing but after a few weeks things pile up and then I get lazy and it stops working. Why should I invest EXTRA effort to create a custom system in Roam when the real problem is ME and no app can fix that?”

2/🧵
Let’s set aside the fact that it ISN’T you (it’s system friction).

If you’re still reading this thread 3 tweets in, then you’ve seen the magic of Roam and you want that magic to be working for YOU and YOUR work.

Is that possible? (spoiler 🚨: It is!)

1/ Over last 2 weeks been playing with @craftdocsapp while working on my newest @obsdmd plugin. For all you #roamans, it is Roam42 workBench, but tailored to Obsidian. I am calling it Text Transporter (for you Star Trek fans) since there is already a plugin with workbench name.
2/ anyhow @craftdocsapp is beautiful. For those looking for excellent block centric authoring with export MD support, this is amazing.

Some of my #roaman friends (@beauhaan) preach the gospel of Blocks. And I agree, blocks are the best unit for work. Craft supports them natively
3/ While Craft is amazing, I still can't see it's future. It is a little between Roam and Obsidian, but not a totally fair comparison. It is simpler and easier to learn. Uses more standard UX metaphors, which makes it a snap to learn.

A word of advice #Roamans. One of the great virtues of @RoamResearch is its flexibility and efficiency in capturing the chaos of life. Yet one of its largest hinderances to its success as a tool is its users’ behavior. There are several ways that we might better manage our graph.
One such way is to avoid page ref clutter. Two strategies. First, if you use templates (particularly daily), and you don’t end up capturing anything under a page ref - **delete it** - it will only clutter your graph, query results, and contribute to page bloat.
Similarly, if you use {{queries}} on your daily page - **delete** them as a shut-down routine. They are pointless beyond the day at which you use them. Or, as I have done, create a dashboard page containing the desired queries and use #roam42 SmartBlocks to dynamically update.

Sometimes you “plan,” and sometimes you “do”—and as Yogi Berra (probably) said, “You can’t think and hit at the same time.”

Read on to see how I use an [[Agenda]] and [[Log]] in @RoamResearch to get important work done👇🧵 1/

When I’m writing a script or a scene in a novel—or prepping content for videos or blog posts—I brainstorm/gather for a while and then organize it into an outline.

Outlines get a bad rap: folks think too much structure is restrictive—that it limits your creative freedom. 2/
But that’s wrong. Outlines GIVE you freedom.

If you know where you’re going and roughly how to get there, when you switch modes to writing, you’re free to explore. You can wander freely, knowing you have a map in case you get lost. 3/

At its core, #productivity boils down to 3 questions:

1. What do I want to do?
2. What am I doing?
3. What did I do?

If you can answer them effectively, you can do important, fulfilling, meaningful work.

But how? Let's explore.

👇🧵

The three questions imply three types of action: Prepare, Do, and Review.

Preparation encompasses your big picture—Purpose & Priorities—as well as the Processes & Patterns that implement & support your vision—think Projects, daily Plans, and recurring routines and habits.

2/
When you Do something, that's the moment of truth. You might do something you specifically prepared, or your intuition may lead you to do something else. But moment to moment, you can do only one thing at a time. (And that's critical to remember!)

Productivity isn't getting lots of stuff done.

It's getting IMPORTANT stuff done.

My @RoamResearch fellow #Roamans know me as the creator of the GTD-style course "Powerful Task Management in Roam Research" (courses.rjnestor.com/p/powerful-tas…)

#GTD is only part of the picture, though. You can complete 10,000 tasks a day and still be unproductive. 2/
Productivity = Purpose + Process

REAL productivity is working toward something important. And what's awesome is that YOU get to decide what "important" means to you.

Working with Purpose means working toward what's important to you. But how do you discover what's important? 3/

I haven’t said this yet, but @RoamHacker, #roam42 [[SmartBlocks]] are the first step in a lot of what we have been talking about for months - a true [[central source of truth]] data repository in @RoamResearch which to link all our PKM arenas.
When the API comes out, I expect great things from you 😁. I know you do this for the love of it. Respect. But you are also changing peoples lives in subtle ways. I have spent the last decade teaching people to “learn how to learn”.
To encourage the unknowing, the unwilling, and the passionate to find themselves and discover joy in thinking. We all have our [[calling]]. You have allowed me to better engage in my own work - engage in my own thinking - and frankly being a better human.
