Another #socialdistancing activity: visit #NovaScotia parks that contain former mines/quarries!
#Granite from #TerenceBay was used in heritage buildings in the 1800s and early 1900s. This former quarry is now part of the #TerenceBayWildernessArea.

Former mines and quarries are often hidden in plain view! #PointPleasantPark contains 50+ former quarries. The stone was used to build walls and forts in the park. For example, slate from the #QuarryPond helped build the #MartelloTower.

#KiwanisPark in #Truro was developed as a gravel pit in the 1930s to help build Route 2. Like a lot of former pits and #quarries, the site has filled with water and become a natural oasis in the heart of the town.

#GameofThrones used #Iceland's #Thingvellir Park as the #BloodyGate. Its landscape is caused by the Eurasian and #NorthAmerican tectonic plates meeting there and pulling apart at a rate of 2 cms per year. This made a rift valley: low land between 2 separating continents.

#MagheramorneQuarry, #NorthernIreland, is the set for #CastleBlack and #TheWall in #GameofThrones. The quarry wall is used as a backdrop and effects make it look huge.
The site's limestone was used to make cement. #NS has a limestone quarry and cement plant in Brookfield.

Small holes were made with hand-held drills and filled with explosive to blast the rock. Some drill holes can still be found at the site.

#Mining built #NS!
The #Amherst Red Stone #Quarry was on James Donalds' farm, east of Willow St. (1889-1914). It provided #sandstone for many Amherst heritage buildings including Bank of #NovaScotia (built 1907), Trinity-St. Stephen’s (1906) and 1st Baptist Church (1895).
#nspoli ImageImageImage
"Busy #Amherst" grew rapidly after the #IntercolonialRailway was built through town in 1876 and with the growth of industries like #coal #mining, transforming it from a village to a bustling industrial town. Many of its beautiful buildings date from that era.

Today, the #Amherst Red Stone #Quarry is a lovely pond in a field. Former #mines and #quarries are often hidden in plain sight!

In the 1800s, #NovaScotia sold the best #grindstones in #NorthAmerica! A #grindstone is a round stone, usually #sandstone, used for sharpening tools. #LowerCove in #Cumberland County was the main area where the #stones were extracted, shaped and exported from.
#nspoli #NS #mining ImageImage
The biggest company was #Atlantic #Grindstone which operated from 1831 to the early 1900s in #LowerCove because it had excellent quality #sandstone and access to #tidewater for exporting. Access to tidewater is still a key advantage for #NovaScotia #mining companies.

Prior to the 1800s, #Acadians produced #grindstones from #LowerCove and other sites on #ChignectoBay for domestic use. The #British army used grindstones from #LowerCove to sharpen their weapons in the #Warof1812.

Been watching season 3 of #TheCrown?
Despite 2000 years of stone construction, #London has no indigenous building stone. Its geology is sand, gravel and clay. Stone has been imported since #Roman times along the #RiverThames to build that amazing city.
#nspoli #NovaScotia #mining Image
To build #Londinium (starting in 47 AD), Romans imported stone from many places in #England and from as far away as #Egypt, #Greece and #Italy. Part of the Roman defensive wall is still visible and many buildings have been uncovered (amphitheatre, forum, bath houses, etc)

Medieval #London had narrow streets and timber-framed, thatch houses so the #GreatFireofLondon destroyed much of it in 1666. Legislation afterward required stone or brick construction to prevent future fires. #Halifax NS passed a similar bylaw in 1857 after several fires.

Many #NovaScotia #mines/#quarries in the 1800s used tramways (horse-drawn wagons on rails) to transport rock. They were ancestors to our first railways because they showed the advantage of steel rails (instead of wood) and gave a platform for early locomotive experiments.
#nspoli Image
#NovaScotia's first railway (meaning it was powered by steam, not horses) was the Albion Mines Railway in Stellarton, built in 1839 to haul coal from the #Stellarton mines to docks in #Pictou Harbour. It was only the second steam railway in Canada. It operated until 1961.

Samson, the oldest locomotive in Canada, was 1 of the iron horses imported from England in 1839 to haul Albion Mines trains. Retired in 1883, it was displayed at Chicago's World Fair, in Baltimore, #Halifax and #NewGlasgow. Today it's at the Stellarton Museum of Industry.
