We love getting questions about mining, minerals and geology! We were asked about historical copper mining around the #WaughsRiver in Tatamagouche, #CumberlandCounty. See this thread!

There are a number of copper occurrences around #WaughsRiver but only a modest amount of actual mining took place.
After their arrival in #Tatamagouche by 1710, the #Acadians attempted smelting small quantities of copper they found around the North Shore, but with little success. Image
For example, they had a small #copper mine on Mine Hole Brook, where it joined with #WaughsRiver from the west (close to where Black River joins the Waugh from the east).

The #mineral #howlite was discovered near #Windsor #NS in 1868 by #HenryHow, a prof at #KingsCollege. He was alerted to it by #miners at a quarry where it was a strange impurity in the #gypsum. Its main use is in jewelry, partly because it's porous and can be easily dyed.

The #mineral #mordenite is named for #Morden, #NovaScotia, where #HenryHow discovered it in 1864. It's used to clean up chemical spills, in animal feed and for water treatment.

#Morden was originally called #FrenchCross after a memorial to #Acadians who died fleeing the #British expulsion of the #French in 1755. A #driftwood cross stood there from 1756 to ~1820. Replacement crosses were built in 1887, 1924 and the current stone one in 1964.

In the 1800s, #NovaScotia sold the best #grindstones in #NorthAmerica! A #grindstone is a round stone, usually #sandstone, used for sharpening tools. #LowerCove in #Cumberland County was the main area where the #stones were extracted, shaped and exported from.

The biggest company was #Atlantic #Grindstone which operated from 1831 to the early 1900s in #LowerCove because it had excellent quality #sandstone and access to #tidewater for exporting. Access to tidewater is still a key advantage for #NovaScotia #mining companies.

Prior to the 1800s, #Acadians produced #grindstones from #LowerCove and other sites on #ChignectoBay for domestic use. The #British army used grindstones from #LowerCove to sharpen their weapons in the #Warof1812.
