Tasmania has the last Liberal state government in the country now so does that mean Tasmania is politically conservative? NO!

A thread following #NSWvotes to explain this issue.

#politas
1. It's easy to see from federal stats that Tasmania is not "conservative". Tasmania had Labor's highest state 2PP at every federal election from 1993 to 2019 (but not 2022).
2. The Tasmanian Liberal government has been dominated by moderates. The "moderates" have had the numbers and supplied all three Premiers from 2014 onwards. The current Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, is the most moderate so far, to the point of having been conspicuously so.

Scuttlebutt re potential resignation/retirement of Mark Shelton.

A recount would be interesting. What makes it interesting is that Stephanie Cameron who would otherwise probably win easily is a bit disadvantaged by the Hare-Clark recount bug.

#politas
The bug (see kevinbonham.blogspot.com/2019/09/wonk-c…) would given the other two Liberals several hundred of their own votes back as a reward for getting excluded before Shelton was elected.
Probably Cameron is still the favourite but a model I just did had her only a few hundred ahead on recount primaries. She and Shelton did tend strongly to poll well together in the same booths (Meander Valley and surrounds), but most of those were smaller booths.

I was at this event with my family (including my baby daughter). Political leaders were at this event.

I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not going to get into the legal issues of this. For me, this is about ethics, safety, & the #politas government's responsibilities.

🧵 1/
At a time when we have a @Tasmania_COI undertaking its work precisely because victim/survivors were abused, targeted & vilified by those in government institutions, it is incomprehensible that they have continued to prosecute action against a whistleblower in this manner 2/
My contribution to the #coi does not compare to the personal stories & sacrifice of others that gave evidence. I tried to do what I could. Attending this event seemed like a small gesture for so many that do not have a voice, but might have high hopes for a positive outcome 3/

Today has been alot 😢

A court hearing where @RockliffTeam said they will seek all details & docs regarding abuse I survived 25 years ago to fight my WC claim due to my workplace being a child abuse cesspit.

Prior, an invite to a ‘settlement’ conference on Monday. #politas 1/5
They will fly me to Hobart, unsure if health will permit yet. Unsure if I can take more cruelty when I’ve done nothing wrong & am sick.

I was injured reporting Child Sexual Abuse at AYDC. @Tasmania_COI

Will they listen to medical advice? Or seek to break me more? #politas 2/5
Whatever the motivation, please - send strength 🙏. I’ve got nothing left & know how low they go.

Today in court for my WC claim as a woman in my mid 30s, the State raised my father’s abuse of me age 4. Can Survivors never be free?

Ministers,
In this process (that should not be occurring as I should be safe at work either not seeing child sexual abuse or supported to report it)

I’ve been surveilled with my children.
I’ve been followed.
I’ve been gaslit, threatened & lied to by the MOST senior staff.

1/10
I’ve been retraumatised.
I’ve had the State knowingly caused harm to me.
I’ve been manipulated.
I’ve been threatened.
I’ve had my income ceased for no reason, many times.
I’ve had to pay legal fees to have it reinstated.
I’ve been taken urgently to hospital twice.

2/10
I’ve learnt how cruel people can be.
I’ve spent my families life savings on legal fees to resolve this.
I’ve had 5 forced psych evaluations.
The state made them privileged as they are supportive of me.
I’ve been denied treatment I desperately need.
I kept giving evidence.

Note that:

1. This was (from memory) the first Q in a long list of Qs - it would be interesting to have information on the drop-out rate.

2. Even this Q while far less leading than those later implies an argument against the stadium (cost) and is not balanced.

#politas
This too. By saying "Liberal" you may attract a result contaminated by partisan views. "Tasmanian Government" would be perfectly sufficient if you needed to mention the government at all (I'm not even sure you do). #pollshapedobject

It reminds me of the same polling cycles Tasmania had forever with issues like the pulp mill and old growth logging where there were dozens of polls supposed to show public opposition and almost none of them were soundly designed.

Debate on govt's electoral reform bill has moved to the area of much interest to me, public funding (S132). The Greens are now moving an amendment to remove the proposed 4% threshhold for public funding entirely (I support keeping it but to parties not candidates). #politas
There is a valid argument for a threshhold of some sort that isn't money-saving - discourage unnecessary proliferation of uncompetitive candidates/parties. Anyway, amendment defeated without division.
Labor now moving amendments to change from per-candidate funding to per-party funding. I support this change very strongly (there may be some discussion about exact wording.)

My concerns about the proposed public funding model for elections were discussed today extensively in the House. (See ) #politaskevinbonham.blogspot.com/2022/11/how-no…
I have just heard Attorney-General Archer's response and my jaw is on the floor. She has claimed the ACT is different from Tasmania because the ACT has above the line voting. It does not.

#politas
Here is a ballot paper sample from the ACT's website. There is no above the line section. There has never been one in their version of Hare-Clark

UTAS Move Elector Poll (final)

YES 7797 (25.62)
NO 22631 (74.38)

(They were going to finish Hobart Deputy Mayor first but evidently the plan changed somewhere perhaps because the LM and DM counts were taking so long.)
This was not an opinion poll - an opinion poll is a small sample of a much greater whole that may be subject to weighting errors and random sample noise. This was a compulsory vote in which 84% of enrolled Hobart voters voted with only 5% of those declining to express a view.

The proposed apology to be held at Parliament & requiring registration is grossly ignorant of the fact that the majority of Victim Survivors are from AYDC & OOHC - and may struggle with literacy, enclosed spaces, authoritative ppl & buildings - even using computers to register 1/
This apology must be accessible to those it is for. Why is it in your safe space not theirs? Why is it not open to all? Will there be opportunities to respond? That is an important part of offering a meaningful apology. What will you do now, to build the foundations needed.. 2/
..so that people who have been horrendously harmed by the Government; can believe a word of what is said? Will those with criminal records be welcomed into parliament? Or perhaps not offered a ‘limited seat’. Who is this apology for? @CassyOConnorMP @RockliffTeam #politas 3/

Another Covid wave/s coming & our governments, Liberal/Labor, State & Federal, have left Australians defenceless .. bar waning vaccines.

Ask your employer what they’re doing to meet their obligations under the Work Health & Safety Act 2012.

How could requiring sick staff to come to work, allowing unmitigated Covid spread, be anything but unlawful?
#politas
2.
Isn’t this what the Act is for? To keep workers safe?

Covid is a savage, multi-system disease. It injures our brains & organs.

It’s ‘reasonably practicable’ to ensure adequate ventilation, air filters, masks indoors, & infected staff be allowed to recover on sick leave.

@RockliffTeam.

Your proposed apology to Victim Survivors of Child Sex Abuse in Tasmania is scheduled on the date of James Griffin's death. With the consent of @KyleePearn, @TiffanySkeggs @keelie_mcmahon @_AmandaDuncan_,

They request this immediately be rectified. #politas 1/5
They also request this apology is made outside Parliament. This is not an opportunity to score points by putting it on the record.

This is an opportunity to speak to the broken hearts of the most courageous individuals in the State (certainly not limited to the above named) 2/5
To whom, you owe a debt of gratitude. THEY have fought to expose this cesspit of pedophilia. THEY have retraumatised themselves for the greater good and to protect others. THEY have not stopped fighting for the truth even when it's nearly killed them. THEY cannot take this. 3/5

Whoah, Hobart has 44 candidates including *ten* not known about as of yesterday. Three I have immediately heard of: Lili Christie (wife of Ron), Tiina Sexton (wife of Sexton who is retiring, ran in 2011), Stefan Vogel (2018 candidate) #lgtas #politas
44 candidates is too many. I am like a broken record on this but it is absolutely nuts that there is no deposit for running for local government and absolutely nuts that you do not need a significant number of nominators.

#lgtas
I'll be adding info on the new candidates through the day as I can find it, little as they deserve it after hiding their lights under bushels for so long.

This week is National Child Protection week and workers have again walked off the job! They have walked off the job twice in two weeks due to a critical shortage of workers and the impact it’s having on at risk kids #politas @CPSUTas @SPSFgroup #auspol

Instances where it has taken over a week to respond to a priority one case (the highest level of risk) when it should be actioned in 4 hours as not enough workers to access and action.

Siejka to resign in August so by-election soon after that for #Pembroke (ALP 8.7% but historically a swing seat). Winner will get an approx 2.5 year term through to 2025 elections. #politas #LegCo
Labor plus left independents currently hold 8/15 seats so there's potential for the left to lose its upper house majority here.
It's common for a few Clarence councillors to run for Pembroke. Will be interesting to see how the timing of the by-election fits in with the council elections and who if anyone runs for both.

Dear Hon. Ruth Forrest MLC,
I am writing to you in regards to The Police Offences (Workplace Safety) Amendment Bill 2022. As a Tasmanian resident who has lived here all their life, I find this Bill a breach of our democracy and I urge you to vote it down after the winter break.
The Police Offences (Workplace Safety) Amendment Bill 2022 is opposed by unions, social sector organisations, a diverse range of community and environmental groups, legal experts, and human rights activists.

Today’s Antarctic announcement from the Morrison Government is a political ploy that provides no certainty for Tasmania’s globally significant science community and is a distraction from the real threat facing the Antarctic: climate change. #auspol #politas

Why did Hobart City Council send a confidential two-page briefing to its/our elected members, secretly urging them to “collaborate” with UTAS on its proposal to redevelop the S/Bay campus? I just asked HCC to release the document, so we can all see it... #LGTas #politas
... but they’ve taken all three of my questions on notice, and blamed their inability to answer on the short period of time since I sent the questions. Just for the record, I sent them on Tuesday 14 January, almost two weeks ago.
The only other questions were from Brian Corr, who asked why the HCC reimbursed petrol costs for Ald Behrakis & Cr Coats that were unusually high for both, & were racked up while both were allegedly on a leave of absence to campaign in the state election. Awkward #LGTas #politas

Actually what happened in Tas with anti-discrimination law in 2012-3 is irrelevant to employment-based discrimination on sexuality grounds in religious schools, as the legal situation there was not changed nor did the then government attempt to change it (thread). #politas
The "wind-backs" @BrianWightman76 refers to were in fact Legislative Council (not just Liberal) amendments to lower house legislation. These especially concerned then government's attempts to broaden Section 17 (comments that offend, insult etc on the basis of attributes).
Somehow (and this still staggers me) the government decided it was a good idea to ban statements that would offend, insult, ridicule (etc) a person on the basis of their political opinions or religion, initially without even a good faith/public purpose exemption.

A THREAD: Absolutely damning report tabled in Tassie Parliament by the Integrity Commission into the former Director of Corporate Services for the Health Service in the north-west. It found he intimidated and victimised employees and fell asleep at work #politas #nwtas
The report found he was often absent from work with no explanation, didn't turn up to meetings. Most bewilderingly, he removed THS-owned property for his own use, including doors and lights (I know my opinion doesn't matter but that's WILD) #politas #nwtas
He was found to have consistently under-performed, which resulted in "avoidable project delays". The NWRH helipad had to be closed the day after it was opened because he hadn't finished the operations manual. An emergency landing was prevented #politas #nwtas
