Let's talk about thylacines.
The last known #thylacine died on this day in 1936 - it was accidentally locked out of the indoor part of its enclosure at a #Hobart zoo, and died of exposure.
A 🧵based on stories of how we've represented thylacines, from my #PlatypusMatters book...
Shortly after the British invaded #Tasmania, a #thylacine was caught & illustrated in 1806. As it lay dying, its captor described how its wounds made it "exceedingly inactive and stupid". Scientists in England twisted these words to imply #thylacines were generally unintelligent.
Over the following decades, accounts painted #thylacines as a mysterious, savage killer of the wilderness - coming out of the shadows to kill sheep. (We know now it is unlikely a #thylacine would have hunted many sheep).

We ask "Is high food insecurity the new normal?"

Our study showed the prevalence of #foodinsecurity in #Tasmania #Australia was 28% during lockdown, 20% after restrictions eased and 23% at 1 year post lockdown.

doi.org/10.1186/s12966… Image
Food insecurity is unlikely to return to pre-pandemic levels (or lower) without intervention!

Vulnerable groups such as young adults, temporary residents and families with dependent children are still struggling to put healthy food on the table every day. Image
The Tasmanian Government know that emergency food relief is NOT the solution to #foodinsecurity.

BUT substantially MORE investment is required for initiatives if they are serious about building food system resilience & reducing #foodinsecurity

In an unprecedented and unfortunate incident, nearly 400 long-finned pilot whales have died due to stranding in Australia’s #Tasmania west coast. On record, it is regarded to be one of the biggest strandings of whales in #Australia.
During the first count, about 270 whales were reported, but the later helicopter survey spotted another 200 whales on Monday. As per the government reports, 88 whales have been rescued so far and another 20 are likely to be guided back again into the water.

Talking first about the trial of a 'goal attainment framework' within the #NDIS - that is to ensure that participants 'life goals' are 'clear, realistic and measurable'

This is subjective. Participant's goals should be their business only #Estimates #Auspol
The addition of 'clear, realistic and measurable' is new to the #NDIS lexicon

How is the #NDIS going to measure someone's life goals with respect to relationships? Sex Ed? Etc

As a disabled person on the NDIS pathway this is very important to me, and to many others #estimates
Will there be any impact on participants funding if the NDIA determines a participant's goal is 'unclear', 'unrealistic' or 'unmeasurable'? This is EXTREMELY important #Estimates #Auspol

Thread: there has been lots of recent discussion over the lack of transparency of political donations & #darkmoney in the Tasmanian election – Tasmania has no political donations law so the only disclosure is as a result of the weak national legislation #tasvotes #politas #auspol
2) Under federal electoral law in 2017/18 only donations to political parties over $13,500 have to be disclosed – but they won’t be made public by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) until Feb 2019, well after the current state election #tasvotes #politas #darkmoney
3) Enforcement of political donations is the responsibility of the AEC. If you if don’t vote at a federal or state election, you are fined … but failure to disclose political donations goes unpunished #tasvotes #politas #darkmoney tasmaniantimes.com/index.php/arti…
