A few words about #Niagen--the journey from yeast to ppl. Pellagra was cured with foods 100 yrs ago. Elvehjem showed NA & NAM are pellagra-preventive 80 yrs ago. Extensive data show beneficial effects of high dose NA in ppl, though uses are limited by flushing. /1
RDA guidelines indicate that ~15 mg/day prevents pellagra but no research has established amounts of a "niacin equivalent" to optimize health. Our 15 yrs work on #nicotinamideriboside establish that it is a uniquely powerful NAD precursor in animal models of metabolic stress. /2

.@jonnybowden there are 4 ways cells can make their NAD. many cells can't use trp or niacin because the genes are off. all cells we know of use nicotinamide or NR. when cells are in a bioenergetic crisis (e.g. ❤️ failure), nam usage goes down and NR genes go up /1
failing ❤️ & damaged neuron increase expression of NRK genes during bioenergetic crisis due to activation of AMPK. when we feed animals in metabolic stress oral NR, they can restore tissue NAD and resist these conditions /2

yes, I am at @FASEBorg. yes, my talk is mostly about maternal & neonatal effects of NR. yes, @gatesfoundation and other agencies are supporting direct comparisons of NR, NMN, NAM and other compounds in our lab. yes, we are showing clinical data on largest NR study to date: /1
3 doses of NR against placebo and I've already been quoted that we are happy with the results, especially showing no dysregulation of 1-carbon metabolism and terrific dose-dependent increases in NAD+. yes, the study is in press @SciReports. no we don't have pub date. /2
