(1/7) Meet Denver artist Mary Mackey. In 1990, she painted on a nearly mile-long stretch of the Berlin Wall, what became known as the East Side Gallery. “It was the first time anybody got to paint on the east side of the Berlin Wall,” Mackey said. “So that was really special.” 
(2/7) On Nov. 9, 1989, after nearly 3 decades of dividing the city's East & West sections, the Berlin Wall fell. During the height of the Cold War, unauthorized crossings could result in death - at least 140 people died at the wall. #mauerfall30
(3/7) Mackey was in London that day. Riveted by what was happening, & knowing she soon had to return to Denver, she thought, “I've got to get to Berlin to see the wall before it comes down.” Then she read in an art mag about artists being recruited to paint on the wall.

@HerthaBSC "Juntos contra los muros. Juntos por Berlín" decía el muro que dividía a la cancha. El hecho simbólico fue muy fuerte cuando los dos equipos salieron a hacer la preparación física y el muro los dividía.

#1989 war ich 11 und vermisste meinen Vater unendlich. Ich hatte ihn 1 Jahr nicht mehr gesehen, denn er saß im Gefängnis wg. Republikflucht. Nov 88 hatte er versucht, die Grenze zwischen Bayern u.CSSR zu überwinden. Ich schrieb ihm Briefe, die Stasi zensierte. Ich weinte viel.
Täglich tröstendes Ritual: 20 Uhr. Er dachte an mich, ich an ihn. So hatten wir es ausgemacht. Ich fühlte mich ihm näher in diesen Minuten.

Er steuerte unsere gemeinsame Wohnung an, suchte meine Mutter und mich. Vergeblich, denn meine Mutter und ich überquerten zeitgleich die Grenze nach W-Berlin über Checkpoint Charlie.

I remember 10 years ago, around the 20th anniversary, I also gave a talk on the subject. It was almost exclusively backward-looking. I didn't relate it to anything happening in Britain at the time, because it didn't seem relevant.
