Colonial conceptions of customary tenure continue to inform conceptions of the customary today. The "customary" is not fixed from some time immemorial; it has been reshaped for ideological & political purposes.

As #Freedom2MapIndia is now a thing-Flashback into #SaveTheMap where community pushed back against draconion mapping law-Geospatial Information Regulation Bill, 2016.While decriminalisation of mapping is welcome step, communities must now keep a watch on pro-surveillance mapping
So #Freedom2MapIndia is because big finance wants map data for #AgriFintech along with #SVAMITVA and land mapping #LandRights and deepen geospatial surveillance in general. #EmbeddedFintech driving policy, as can be seen with authorship of the policy with-in govt.

After access to finance, another big obstacle to agroecology is *ACCESS TO #LAND & #WATER* 🌳🚰

📰This month we published 'The Added Value(s) of #Agroecology: Unlocking the potential for transition in West #Africa'

🔎 The research shows why land & water are fundamental 👇🏿

/1
Rapid #population growth, urban sprawl, and land grabbing have created unprecedented pressures on #land and #water resources in West #Africa. Moreover, land laws, often rooted in the colonial era, have generally failed to protect customary tenure and land use.

/2
In fact, between 2000 & 2012, some 3 million hectares of land were subject to large-scale #land acquisitions across nine West African countries.

🔎In #Senegal alone, 650,000+ ha were granted to investors between 2007 & 2016 – equivalent to 16% of the country's arable land❗️

How to do feminist participatory action research? ✊🏾🎉

We are pivileged to have Prof @DzodziTsikata working with our regional team on women's #landrights. See thread 👇🏽

Participatory action research methods lend themselves better to feminist research than conventional social research methods - this is about challenging power in and through knowledge production. @DzodziTsikata Image
Orthodox research methods often deny women's knowledge and agency and are blind to gender power relations. Feminist research recognises women's epistemic authority. You have to dig behind "I don't know, you will have to talk to my husband". @DzodziTsikata

The PM demonstrates a very selective understanding of Australia's history. The Cocos-Keeling Islands, which fall under the Lingiari electorate, began with Malay slaves and indentured labourers from South Africa, New Guinea and the Dutch East Indies. 1/5
Parts of North Queensland’s prosperity was also built by South Sea Islanders kidnapped from their homes to work as unpaid or poorly paid labourers in the cane fields. 2/5
In the Northern Territory, the pastoral industry was built on the backs of Aboriginal people who were not paid equal wages to their white counterparts, and whose legal battle for compensation for #stolenwages is now in progress. 3/5

After getting a good rap on the knuckles by editors for being a lazy lurker on social media, here's course correction. I am now doing a thread of all my reportage in 2018. (@sree and @prempanicker had encouraged me to do this many years ago 🙈) Please read and share.
While urbanisation is a global trend, villagers around #Ahmedabad don't want to live in cities. Since 2012, #Gujarat government has encouraged 12 cities to swallow up some 800 villages. And now, most of them are resisting. A take on the 'Gujarat Model'.

The two main problems for the new state of #Telangana are exemplified in
