[Thread]. 1. What does @HealthZA's circular about stopping all contact tracing and quarantining for #COVID19 mean and WHY was it issued?

Here we go (with lots of help from @hivepi).
2. What is contract tracing?

It’s when health workers try to trace the people 1 infected person could potentially have infected by asking the infected person who they have been in contact with and getting those people to then test or isolate if they test positive.
3. Why is @HealthZA stopping contract tracing?

In short: It’s too expensive for what we get out of it, so we spend a lot of money 4 very little gain (gain = picking up infected people + stopping them from infecting others). We could use the money better on other stuff/diseases.

#WorldSuicidePreventionDay
1 in 100 deaths is by #suicide.

Every year, more people die as a result of suicide than HIV, malaria or breast cancer - or war and homicide.

[Thread] 1. Are fewer vaccinated than unvaccinated people of 60+ in WC being hospitalised for #COVID19 + dying of it?

YES, FAR FEWER.

1. Hospitalisations: Out of 729 admissions, 699 (96%) = unvaccinated
2. Deaths: Out of 292 deaths, 287 (98.3%) = unvaccinated.

Data: 14-20 Aug
2. Look @ the note @ the bottom of this @WestCapeHealth slide: "With thanks to Sanford Health Hospitals for concept". This is in reference to a slide with a similar template which Sanford Hospitals use for their data, which was also used to release Groote Schuur data this week.
3. #Antivaxxers falsely argued Groote Schuur Hospital data released on this template = untrue because it used a graphic that looked like Sanford Health Hospitals'. But @westerncapehealth confirmed the data as accurate + 2day released more data using a similar template.

[Thread] 1. Glenda Gray, co-lead investigator, #Sisonke:

We now have results to show the #JnJ jab provides significant protection @ the #DeltaVariant in SA.

What is Sisonke?

The Sisonke study used the #JnJ jab to look @ the effectiveness of the jab among SA #HealthWorkers
2. Gray:
1. #Sisonke vaccinated 477 234 #HealthWorkers
2. 122 sites were used to vaccinate health workers
3. Gray:
#Sisonke researchers used three sets of data to analyse the study's results:
1. 2 sets of data from medical insurers were used and one set of provincial persal data
2. Today Gray is only reporting on two sets of data

1. [Thread] #CyrilRamaphosa on #VaccineRolloutSA: #JnJ will deliver 2 million jabs to SA by the end of June (so the 2 million doses we can’t use will all be replaced by the end of the month). Read our @Bhekisisa_MG story about this. bit.ly/3cFxdgo
2. #CyrilRamaphosa: Our first 300 000 #JnJ doses will be used to vaccinate teachers and school staff. Thereafter the next essential workers group that will be prioritised will be security personnel on the frontline. BUT: Our immediate task is to vaccinate people of 60+.
3. #CyrilRamaphosa : SA has the capacity to vaccinate 150 000 people/day (we’re currently doing 80 000 because of a lack of jabs - until our #JnJ jabs arrive).

[Thread]1. LATEST #VaccineRolloutSA stats:
* 282 135 #Pfizer 1st doses by Tue 23:59pm
* What does this tell us about the pace at which we're vaccinating?
- The pace is picking up:
* Mon = 49 276 doses
* Tue = 60 999 (282 135 - 221 136 = 60 999), so on Tue 19% more than on Mon
2. Is the pace at which we're vaccinating fast enough to reach the goals @HealthZA has set? Not yet.
* Health dpt goals = 109 200 vaccinations per day for the week of May 24
* We reached 45% of this goal on Mon and 56% of the goal on Tue
3. What does the provincial distribution of #VaccineRolloutSA look like? @Bhekisisa_MG created this map to make it easy to understand. (The figures are from Mon, because @HealthZA hasn't yet released provincial figures for Tue):
1. KZN: 80 121
2. GT: 49 548
3. EC: 26 232

[Thread] 1. How does the #EVDS decide which site to send you to? It uses the address you entered when you registered. In cities it will assign you a site within 10kms of that address and in rural areas it will allocate a site within 30kms of the address. bit.ly/3ypvQM6
2. Can you currently register on the #EVDS if you’re not a #HealthWorker or someone of 60+? No. The system will automatically calculate your age from your ID nr, and unless you say you’re a health worker, not allow you to register.
bit.ly/3ypvQM6
3. If you don’t have an ID and enter your age manually on the #EVDS, site officials are supposed to ask you for proof of your age or employment as a #HealthWorker before vaccinating you. (But there have been reports that this doesn't happen at some sites.) bit.ly/3ypvQM6

[Thread] 1. How does the government decide who gets a vaccination appointment first? It’s first in, first out. So the earlier you register on the EVDS within the category you fall, the sooner you’ll get an sms with a date, time and place. bit.ly/33NeL0s
2. NB to note: You can only register when @HealthZA
tells you to. If you’re not a #HealthWorker or person of 60+, it wouldn’t help to register now. If you live in a crowded setting/you’re 40+, you’ll be the next categories asked to register. bit.ly/33NeL0s
3. Where do comorbidities fit in? For now, you can't get earlier access to jabs if you have a comorbidity. Age and your likelihood of getting infected is used to determine who comes 1st. That’s why we’re starting off with #HealthWorkers and people of 60+. bit.ly/33NeL0s

[Thread] 1. Why did the #Sisonke trial researchers broaden the definition of #HealthWorkers who can get vaccinated and are people using it to jump the queue (so are non-health workers queuing up to get vaccinated)?
2. The #JandJ doses for the #Sisonke study are research doses specifically donated to vaccinate trial participants (#HealthWorkers). The trial ends on 15 May and unused doses would have to be returned to J&J.
Source: Keith Cloete, WC health dpt
3. Because #Sisonke doses can only be used for the trial, leftover doses can't be given to Phase 1B (#HealthWorkers not covered by Sisonke) or Phase 2 (people of 60+) of the roll-out. Sisonke either has to use the doses/return leftover ones.

1. In a bid to boost demand for shots, Sisonke investigators have widened the criteria for eligible #HealthWorker participants this week, opening the way for researchers, lab staff, care workers, health agency staff + medical schemes to get vaccinated. bit.ly/3tGpZOE
2. Glenda Gray, co-lead Sisonke investigator: “The two-week [Sisonke] pause caused a lot of vaccine hesitancy. We were concerned that ... sites were closing at 2pm or 3pm and doing only a few hundred people a day.” bit.ly/3tGpZOE
3. Sisonke vaccinated 18 000+ people on Tu - the highest nr since the start of the trial. Glenda Gray, co-lead investigator: “We have to close ... before the national roll-out commences. It would be a logistical nightmare [to run the two concurrently]." bit.ly/3tGpZOE

[Thread] 1. 80 000 Johnson & Johnson #CovidVaccines will land in SA today (weather permitting, etc). Where will they go? @bhekisisa_MG’s @KeMohale made an interactive map of the 16 sites and number of doses each site will receive. tabsoft.co/2N979kd
2. The 80 000 J&J doses will go to 16 sites (2 sites in each province, except for the Northern Cape, which will have 1 - one of the Free State’s sites, Pelonomi Hospital, isn’t ready yet and will be phased in when it is. bit.ly/3rXrAPY
3. Who will get vaccinated first? #HealthWorkers. Why? They deal with #COVID19 patients + are the most vulnerable to infection. Everyone needs to register on @HealthZA’s system. Only 28% of SA’s 1.25 million workers had done so by 1pm on Tue. Register: vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za

1⃣ Awareness. Most policymakers are challenged to understand how many #health workers they have, their locations, status & latest qualifications when making #health decisions. These challenges are exacerbated during crises like #COVID19 where real-time data are essential.
2⃣ Self-regulation. Effective human resource information systems are not built overnight. Most resulted through #healthpolicy mandates & required #multisectoral governance & buy-in, including health, IT, education, labor, finance, private sectors, as done in the #Philippines.

A day in the life of a #COVID-19 #healthworker in India. A #Thread.

#indiafightscorona #healthwarriors
What does it mean to be a frontline warrior amid the #Coronavirus ( #COVID-19 ) pandemic? It means being away from home for weeks, staying awake for days and nights,
dealing with emotionally vulnerable patients and a sense of timelessness – when the clock ceases to exist and the patients’ recovery is all that matters.

#HealthWorkers are at higher risk of #COVID19.

They are doing their jobs, despite the jeopardy, stress & fatigue. We ask that you do yours: Follow the advice of national authorities and @WHO. #StayHome when asked, clean hands, cover coughs, physical distance. #coronavirus
#HealthWorkers can get sick when they lack protective equipment. @WHO is encouraging partners to boost global supplies of essential items. But each of us must maximize efforts to stay safe from the #coronavirus. By protecting ourselves, we are also protecting them.
Many @WHO colleagues have had field experience as #healthworkers. They work hard to craft technical guidance for health workers and facilities to ensure the safety of professionals and patients alike. bit.ly/2vDMprZ #COVID19 #coronavirus
