THE STORY OF #PĀṆINI

#SanskritStoryTime

Once upon a time around 500 BCE, in a town called Takshashila, there lived a boy named Pāṇini, and he was an utter fool. Everyone made fun of him for being a fool, and his parents and teachers thought he would amount to nothing.
One day, he somehow got admitted to Takshashila University, where people came from far and wide to study. Perhaps his father knew someone there, or perhaps they took pity on him. He was a #Sanskrit #Grammar major. Grammar was the respectable subject to study at the time.
Perhaps he wanted to study #Yoga or something, but his father, like other South Asian dads, wanted his son to study the best thing for his future. It was something like SA dads wanting their kids to study #medicine or #engineering today.

#Narcissism thread 🧵 15 (more) questions to ask yourself if you are questioning whether someone is a #narcissist
1. Do they devalue, diminish, demonise or harshly judge you or act as the righteous ‘authority’ figure with you regardless of their age, status or employment? 🚩
Are they #superior? For e.g. A non lawyer preaching to a lawyer about law. 2. Are they #defensive? Do they seem only interested in trying to prove that they are right & you are wrong, in a defensive mode? 🚩They are #competitive not co-operative. Co-operation is a must #healthy
3. Do they demand #attention from you? For e.g., insisting on having the conversation when it’s convenient for them only &/or use emotional #manipulation to ensure conversation happens on ‘their’ terms? They may not answer the question, go off topic, deflect, defensive, accuse 🚩

A publishing contract I’m reviewing comes with a helpful ms style guide, which I think is genius. An author recently had a horrible experience with the publisher-hired copy editor who didn’t even know these basic terms. Highlights 👇
✔️Do not hyphenate Asian American, African American, Indian American.

✔️ When possible, specify the Native American tribe instead of using just Native American or Indigenous.
✔️Capitalize Black when referring to people of the African diaspora; Lowercase brown and white because they do not refer to a shared race, ethnicity, or culture.

✔️For unspecified singular pronouns, they/their/them is preferred over he/she.

So much hysteria (on both 'sides') about primary #grammar, mostly from people who don't teach it, or who don't know much about grammar. Knowing some theory and terminology can be very useful, but there are real problems about how it has been formulated in the curriculum. To...
...experts in linguistics and grammar, there are considerable intellectual flaws in what is taught as 'correct'. But there are also real issues with how it is taught, with opportunity cost, and with distorting effects on the teaching of writing. Those, in turn, are...
...mainly a function of how it is assessed. These are real issues. And mostly, when someone rails against it, it is these distortions that they are unhappy about, not that children know something, or that knowing it per se is antithetical to creativity. Teachers are...

Fronted adverbials, a thread. Firstly, a letter from @MichaelRosenYes pointing out the sheer arbitrariness of them being in the curriculum for primary children anyway: theguardian.com/education/2021…

PS. ‘Accountancy and Accountability’ could be an undiscovered Austen manuscript 😆 1/6
2/ 6 Then some relevant podcasts on #frontedadverbials or why we make kids learn #grammar. What’s the point? Well, @davcr explained bit.ly/DavidCrystalLi… that naming the parts of a car doesn’t teach you to drive it, or set off to a destination. Writing is similar. Here’s why ⬇️
3/6 Then 2x podcasts with @MichaelRosenYes about the joy of language and writing, starting with bit.ly/MichaelRosen1 How can we expect kids to love language when their creativity is restricted in ‘writing by numbers’ exercises? ⬇️

A Yale History professor told me to get tutoring for my “remedial English.” I’d already received Wright Prize for nonfiction & later that year, the Veech Prize for fiction, so I told him: “It’s not that I don’t know how to write; it’s that you don’t know how to read.” #Grammar
You shouldn’t have to win prizes to defend your writing. I just want to witness here that language and style can be an oppressive force. I teach writing at a college, and I want my students to love the power, beauty, and suppleness of language.
Coda: I dropped that history class; however, I shouldn’t have had to do so. I was a History major, and ironically, I was awarded 2 prizes from the Yale English Department under a blind submission process (no names were listed on the manuscripts), which strengthened my resolve.

hi #poliscitwitter can any political theorists help me understand why Harvey Mansfield's "Manliness" is an academic text rather than, as it appears, a combination of some deeply homoerotic fan fiction and the kind of manifesto you usually find along with several bodies? Image

Thread: Another overview amazing #Muslim *female* achievement.

Did you know the first university in the world was built by a Muslim woman approx 1200 years ago?

This is the story of Fatima Al-Fihiri (800–880 CE). #BadassWoman #twitterstorians

1/15
2. Daughter of a wealthy businessman, the family moved from Tunisia to Fez, Morocco during the rule of King Idriss II. When both her husband and father died, Fatima and her sister inherited a fortune.

They chose to spend their inheritance on building educational institutions.
3. In 859, Fatima built the Al-Qayrawan #Mosque, decorated in the Andalusian style with Kufic calligraphy (early style) engraved throughout. At 3,000 sq ft, it can fit 22,000 people.

She stacked it with Islamic works (Qur’ans, #Hadith collections, etc).

Know the Difference between BEEN and BEING

The verb 'be' has eight forms: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been. Among these forms, BEEN and BEING mostly suffer a cruel misuse by users of the English language.

#EnglishLanguage #Grammar #Verbs #DgreatTutor
But these two are different in form and function.

1. Difference in FORM
When BEING is used, it is preceded by any of ‘am’, ‘is’ ‘are’, ‘was’, ‘were’ and succeeded by the past participle of the verb (EATEN & SPOKEN are the past participle forms of EAT and SPEAK)

#DgreatTutor
eg.,
The food IS BEING EATEN by Tola
I AM BEING punished by Mr. Tere

When BEEN is used, it is preceded by any of ‘has’, ‘have’ or ‘had’ and succeeded by the past participle of the verb.
eg.,
The food HAS BEEN EATEN by Tola
I HAVE BEEN PUNISHED by Mr. Tere
