In light of #AWP2020 and their sudden willingness of accommodate peoples' desire to telespeak, I'm sharing this piece @karriehiggins and I wrote a while back when they SCOFFED at such a request:

@karriehiggins Karrie has already tweeted about this issue on here, go read about it. I just wanted to point out how much it hurts to see this issue embraced now, when it was such a (ridiculous) hurdle then.
@karriehiggins When #disabled writers needed accessibility, we were shamed by #awp. I will never go back until major things change when it comes to AWP and #criplit and those of us who write it. @GeorgesDryad @SFdirewolf

After yesterday’s #AWP20 / #AWP2020 spectacle, I will no longer be attending this year’s conference. As a disabled writer and a professor of creative writing and disability studies, I have a few thoughts on yesterday’s debacle.
I teach and mentor a large number of disabled students, many that hope to become writers, most immunocompromised. Even if I am safe to travel, I will not risk exposing them to what could prove deadly.
I also planned to leave AWP and head home to visit my aging parents, in poor health and without health insurance, as well as my 1-year-old niece, who has been undergoing weekly chemo for the last nine months, again without health insurance.

#AWP20 Suggestions regarding the AWP conference. Feel free to share.

1) If you are on Twitter and not going to AWP, check out #AWPvirtualbookfair.
2a) #AWP2020 If you disagree with the decision that the AWP Board made to go on with the conference or are frustrated with the announcement delay today, I urge you to address your concerns to the AWP Board President Kathleen Driskell and cc at least one other board member
2b) (perhaps your regional council chair) and at least one of the executive directors. This decision and the timing was the board’s responsibility. I urge you not to direct your criticism about policy or this decision directly to staff.

Heading to #AWP20 in less than two weeks and part of two panels. The first is on neurodiversity and teaching on Friday at 10:45am. I’m happy to see ours is not the only panel on neurodiversity. #AWP2020 #neurodiversity #teaching @JanelleAdsit Image
My second #AWP2020 panel is on grammar and poetry on Saturday, March 7, at 1:45pm. We’re really going to nerd out with language at this one. #grammar #poetry #AWP20 Image
Our MFA students & amazing admin will be at the @TabJournal booth #1543 and I look forward to talking with writers in person there. #AWP2020 #AWP20 #litjournal
